#1. Bent Wheels - from Joshua Goldstein

Date: Mon, 9 Oct 2000 18:09:22 -0700 From: "Joshua Goldstein" <heymaceo@yahoo.com> Subject: Bent Wheels On the subject of bent wheels, I have asked this before with no good answer: Assuming that I have a bent rim (and I must, I've hit some zingers in San Francisco), and yet I notice no shimmying at speed or anything else that might indicate that I have bent wheels, whats the big deal about having a bent rim. If a tech told me that I have a bent rim yet I had no indication of it through real world use, why should I really care about the bent rim? Seems like Bent Rims are only worth worrying about if they effect driveability. Josh _________________________________________________________ Do You Yahoo!? #4. Torn rubber door gasket - from Andrej Dolenc
Top
Date: Sun, 8 Oct 2000 23:26:27 -0400 From: Andrej Dolenc <adolenc@erols.com> Subject: Torn rubber door gasket Hi all, I just noticed this weekend that the rubber door / window gasket on the passenger side of my 2 door '97 M3 is torn a bit. Right up in the top back corner, it's enough of a tear that sometimes I lower and raise that window, the rubber will straddle the window as the window goes up - in other words, as the window goes up, the rubber will end up on the outside of the window at and beyond the tear (instead of on the inside as it's supposed to be). And this is kind of a pain since on the 2 door, the window automatically lowers and raises when that door is opened. So, 2 questions: - is this reparable? Can the rubber be glued together somehow? Doesn't seem like it to me, but what do I know?! - barring that, how much of a PITA is replacing this rubber? Thanks, Andrej '97 M3

If you live in the city of Chicago, please look us up. My buddies in the Windy City chapter have had nickname for me for the last few years...."WoWo" for "Wax On Wax Off" (I'm known to shake out the floormats after *every* guest rides in my car) ... I guess I'm living out the nickname now! Yeah yeah, I know I'm anal, at least know maybe I can try and make a living off of it. ;-) http://www.detailwerkschicago.com Many thanks to Suzy for letting me post this message Jason Leung 92 332i turbo (that's the car in the pictures)

No, they are probably 5 times stronger, less likely to get bent. I bought the BMW forged rims after I got tired of looking at bent rims on my M3. I bent 6 of the stock '95 wheels but so far none of my forged rims. I even did a comparison test by accident - literally. I had the "soft as butter" rims on the front and the forged rims on the back. I hit a pot hole and seriously bent the front stock rim but the forged rim came through the same pothole unscathed. It was slightly skewed in favor of the forged rim, however. I had a 235/40 tire on the soft stock rim and a 245/40 tire on the forged rim. The 245/40 tire has a much taller sidewall and protects the rim much better. By the way, I think when BMW went to 225/45 and 245/40 tires instead of 235/40 tires, that did more to reduce the number of bent rims than anything. You don't hear nearly as many cases of bent '96+ rims as '95. And in my case, after spending $2,300 for new rims, you can be damn sure I watch the road and swerve for anything bigger than a marble! :-) Lowell Seaton '95 M3/2 - 8.5 polished forged rims all around, currently wearing 235/45 R Compound Toyo tires. Also keep the pressures up and it will help prevent bending rims. John is right, that was a great article (not for all the praise of the 95 M3) but they managed to encounter almost every little problem the 95 M3's had at the time. They bent all the wheels, the splash shield fell off at 100+ mph, one of the mirrors snapped off....etc. Problems that you'll never stop hearing about on this list when newbies join. :-) Carlos 91 M3 x95 M3 bent 4 stock wheels in Seattle, bent them some more (visible) in Detroit, then bent one Fikse (fix-me) wheel on I-275. Drive the car, you will bend the wheels, having the 45 series sidewalls seems to have reduced this for all you newer M3 guys. __________________________________________________ Do You Yahoo!? I just got a pair of the new Kumho 712's in the 245 size. Has anyone noticed that they aren't as wide as other 245's? They are definately narrower than the Pilot sports, and look more like the 225's. 2. Has anyone tried the 255's? Did they fit without fender rolling? I've heard the Kumho Victoracer's are wider than normal, and you must run 225's in this tire. Why would these run smaller? #10. Oil on spark plug when changing them - from Monty Baugh

Date: Tue, 10 Oct 2000 08:40:49 -0500 From: Monty Baugh <mbaugh@telecom-management.com> Subject: Oil on spark plug when changing them A wet plug is a sign that the cylinder is running rich. The only way I could imagine that oil would get on the outside of a plug would be a leak somewhere, possibly around the valve cover. Reminds me of an incident I saw when I was a young teenager. Guy in line at the gas station says he needs a quart of oil (admitting that his dad says he needs to add some), which the attendant sells him. He walks out to the car, raises the hood, and fidgets with plug wires, hoses, etc. Then he opens the quart of oil, pours it all over the top of the engine, shuts the hood and leaves. True story.
