#1. [E36M3] Tire Fitment Option - from twisty M3

Date: Tue, 10 Oct 2000 08:38:31 PDT From: "twisty M3" <twistym3@hotmail.com> Subject: [E36M3] Tire Fitment Option I've possibly found myself a set of S02s from a this really attractive woman and I just want to verify the fitment possibility (of the tires) with the list. I know the lightweights came with staggered wheels (7.5/8.5) but were shod with 235/40-17s all around. Are there any negatives to this fitment and is this a "safe" option on the staggered M-Contours of a heavyweight M3? (the car will see track time with this set up so high speeds and corners will definitely come into play) The only thing I can think to watch out for is the car being a little more tail happy but would that be noticeable? Any negative or postive feedback would be appreciated. Thanks! Jonathan P.S. On that topic of the guy pouring oil all over his engine... Hilarious. I've never done that but I did forget to put the oil cap back on my Dad's truck once when I was in highschool. Now *that* can make a mess under the hood. _________________________________________________________________________ Get Your Private, Free E-mail from MSN Hotmail at http://www.hotmail.com. #2. Wheel Studs - from Steve D'Gerolamo

Date: Tue, 10 Oct 2000 11:30:51 -0400 From: "Steve D'Gerolamo" <steved3@idt.net> Subject: Wheel Studs The nicest studs I've seen are those coming on the Ferrari 360 Challenge cars. These M14 studs thread into the hub approx 12-13mm to a 20mm diameter seat. This seat does much to increase the side loading capacity to prevent shearing. If I had a BMW track car, I'd increase the stud size to 14mm with a little help from my friends at SKF. This would not be a problem for most BMW wheels although the rotor hat holes would have to be drilled to allow the larger seat diameter to be recessed and secured firmly against the hub. #5. do we have a discount here - from Holeman, David

Date: Tue, 10 Oct 2000 15:33:54 -0500 From: "Holeman, David" <david.holeman@viaticus.com> Subject: do we have a discount here Hi, I was looking at the erebuni web site and came across this note. Does anyone know if the digest has registered for a discount with this company. Might be nice if we did. Anyone have any experience with their products? We do offer club members a 20% to 30% discount off of our web prices depending on a product. Your club president must mail us a letter on your club letterhead to the attention of Promotional Department requesting to sign your club for our Club Discount Program. In that letter you should tell us a little about your club and state that you are looking for a discount for your club members. We would also need a current list of your club members with their names, addresses, phone numbers and year, make and model of their car. Your club coordinator at Erebuni will be Gary at 888.EREBUNI ext.202. Gary would be your only contact at Erebuni and he will extend the discount only to those members whose names he has on the list. #6. Brake duct advice and opinions needed - from vernon@sprynet.com
Top
Date: Tue, 10 Oct 2000 17:11:03 -0400 From: vernon@sprynet.com Subject: Brake duct advice and opinions needed I'm considering adding brake ducts to my front rotors. For a while I considered removing the (useless) fog lights and adding a second brake duct, but lately I'm thinking about just adding a duct/hose to each existing brake duct and routing it to the back of the rotor, possibly with the plates from Turner. Has anyone had any good or bad experiences with a setup like this? I'm obviously worried about tire/wheel interference at full steering lock. I think that adding a duct right to the rotor may be a better next step than the whole fog light extraction. I've seen some decent looking home-grown setups at driving events, everyone seems to be happy with them. Any advice would be appreciated. Thanks! Vern Anderson 98 ///M3 w/ lots of goodies

#7. Re: Bent Wheels - from Ron Buchalski

Date: Tue, 10 Oct 2000 21:21:46 GMT From: "Ron Buchalski" <rbuchals@hotmail.com> Subject: Re: Bent Wheels Well, if you can't feel any problems with a bent wheel, and there is no abnormal tire wear, then there's no need to do anything to repair the wheel. But, in most cases, a bent wheel will show itself by adding a vibration that won't go away, no matter how well the wheel/tire combo is balanced. When I purchased my '95 M3, I took the car to a shop for pre-purchase inspection (Excluservice in Rockville, MD). They found three bent wheels. Both front wheels were bent, and it was obvious because the outside rim had a noticeable flat area. I suspected something, because the car had a vibration that could be felt in the steering wheel. The third bent wheel was in the rear, and I believe that it was an inside portion of the rim that had the bend. Well, I couldn't see the bend in the rear wheel, and I couldn't feel a vibration from the rear of the car. The selling dealer agreed to pay for the cost of wheel repairs, and I had the two front wheels straightened at Wheel Collision Center. They've been fine ever since. I've also been lucky, and I make sure that there's enough air in the tires. -rb >Date: Mon, 9 Oct 2000 18:09:22 -0700 >From: "Joshua Goldstein" <heymaceo@yahoo.com> >Subject: Bent Wheels > >On the subject of bent wheels, I have asked this before with no good >answer: > >Assuming that I have a bent rim (and I must, I've hit some zingers in San >Francisco), and yet I notice no shimmying at speed or anything else that >might indicate that I have bent wheels, whats the big deal about having a >bent rim. Get the Barry Battle plates from www.bimmerworld.com instead of the Turner ones. The Turner ones require a press to install onto the hubs. The Barry Battle plates bolt onto the hubs where the original backing plate was attached. I have them on my E30 M3 - they are SERIOUSLY trick. I bought the full kit from Bimmerworld. While I have some complaints about their definition of "kit" (my idea of a kit comes with usable instructions, especially when some fabrication is required to get the NACA ducts to fit) and the hose they sent could be better, the backing plates and flanges are absolutely top-notch. > I'm obviously worried about tire/wheel interference at full steering lock. > Speaking of which, I highly recommend the Bimmerworld flanges. They allow you to easily detach the hose that runs from the inner fender well to the brake backing plate. A very nice idea. If you don't want to lose your foglights, it sounds like a combination of the Bimmerworld backing plates and flanges with the JTD undertray and house routing would be ideal. You'd pick up air from the center grill and route it right to the brake rotors. Plus, you'd be able to remove the hoses easily for protracted street driving and maintain your full steering lock. JT Designs: www.jt-designs.com Incidentally, I ordered 3" high-temp silicon hose from Pegasus. It's more flexible that the stuff that Bimmerworld sent, so I think it'll stay attached better. I'll let you know on 11/7. :) www.pegasusautoracing.com - Mark '95 M3 '97 528i 5-spd '88 M3, Hennarot, Bimmerworld brake ducting kit ---- Mark Dadgar - Product Manager, Peripherals (650) 230-5037 voice - (650) 230-2100 fax mdadgar@handspring.com - Handspring, Inc. Even as possible tire wear, please (I'm replacing the right-side tires that are corded on the outside edges - too many counter-clockwise tracks lately :-)). I'd prefer SF Bay Area, but would consider paying shipping from elsewhere for a decent pair of tires. Thanks, Jim Bassett ....Nikolas has out-grown his shower-gift clothes, time to economize :-)

I received a reply from a Toyo rep (two weeks after my inquiry!) regarding the Toyo RA-1s. (I was initially checking on the T1-S but that's besides the point.) The rep informed me that the RA-1s will be available in 235/40-17s in February of 2001. So everyone who likes these tires, but doesn't like the extra height of the 45 series, is in luck.
