Date: Tue, 10 Oct 2000 15:33:59 -0700 (PDT) From: Andy Chi <m3flyer@yahoo.com> Subject: CF hood for M3 Apparently this guy on bimmer.org owns a CF fab joint and said that he can fab them and sell them for about 500 bucks for hood if he gets ten orders. Regardless, here's the email I got. If this actually happens then I really wonder how AC Schnitzer get to charge us an arm and a leg plus our first borns for only CF dorr skin on the E36... #3. 235's on staggered wheels - from Ed Tang

Date: Tue, 10 Oct 2000 15:44:05 -0700 (PDT) From: Ed Tang <etangf1@yahoo.com> Subject: 235's on staggered wheels In response to: >I know the lightweights came with staggered wheels >(7.5/8.5) but were shod with 235/40-17s all around. >Are there any negatives to this fitment >and is this a "safe" option on the staggered M->Contours of a heavyweight M3? I have a heavyweight M3 with the lightweight (staggered) rims. I think it handles great:) The tire rack salesman I bought the S-02's from had staggered 10 spokes on his and shod 235 S-02 PP's on them. If anything, the 225/245 setup gives you excessive understeer over the original 235 non staggered setup. The S-02's have great grip and I wouldn't be worried about negatives, if any. The Bridgestone Potenza RE730's I have on now really suck compared to the S-02's. I can't afford to trash another set of Pilots and S-02's. Ed Tang 95 Cosmos M3 Gone through a set of Pilots and S-02 PP's and ~$2,000 poorer in one year of autocross usage. __________________________________________________ Do You Yahoo!? Get Yahoo! Buy one or a set and replace them. Just rememember were to apply the silicon grease! Might as well clean the valve cover while you're at it. Jonathan Caldito

I went to the M3 forums hoping to get tips of getting one cheap, but found only one source: Zygmunt Motors $44 each. Are there places where they offer both cheap fog lenses and the protective film? As for fog light and headlight protective film, I've found Stoneguard (no address or number) and Circlebmw. Turner and Bavarian auto were mentioned with no address (I could find out). I am thinking of doing some one place shopping for both the lens and the film. Could someone help me? #7. clutch slippage at 19K miles?? - from Paul Elliott
Top
Date: Tue, 10 Oct 2000 19:33:19 -0400 From: "Paul Elliott" <pelliott@rcn.com> Subject: clutch slippage at 19K miles?? Can someone maybe explain what's going on? To test the integrity of my clutch, on a slight incline, I will get up to about 35 mph, gas it to about 4000 - 4500 rpms, shift into fifth, and let the clutch out fairly quickly. What usually happens the few times I've tried it is that that the clutch will grab with no slippage. Just now, however, when I did it, instead of grabbing, it started slipping like a bandit, and only stopped when I backed off the rpms....I tried it a couple of more times, using both 4th and 5th at about 4K rpms with the same slipping results. Then, to double check, I tried a couple of agressive first to second shifts to see if it would grab enough to leave rubber , and , under this condition, it did, no problem...I would think that if it were slipping badly enough to need replacement, it would slip too badly for first or second gear rubber as well....But this seems not to be the case. When I got home, the car stunk of clutch, like I only smelled once before, after some 0-60 tests. Now, the clutch is stock, and the car only has 19K miles on it. Aside from some 0-60 tests with my Gtech/pro (under 20 runs in total), I usually shift without leaving rubber, and am pretty easy on the clutch....I do have a Vortech supercharger, but Dinan says the stock clutch is adequate until you produce over 370 ft lbs, which Im easlily 60 under. So, how is it possible that my clutch is gone after just 1.25 yrs of ownership and 19K miles? I just tried another 2 tests for slippage: The first was to start the car, clutch in, shift to first, and using heel/toe, put part of right foot on brake, and give a little gas. They say if you have a bad clutch, you will NOT stall when you clutch out...I STALLED! Is clutch ok? Third overall test was to start car, put it into third, and slowly let out the clutch while giving gas....If clutch is bad, you should NOT stall. I STALLED. Is clutch ok? Looking forward to your comments. Thanks. _____________________________ Paul Elliott '99 Alpine White M3; <20000 mi; Forged M dbl-spokes; Rotex pads; Dinan Stage II Supercharger; Stygar Short Shift Kit and clutch stop; Skaags pedals _____________________________ Paul Elliott '99 Alpine White M3; <20000 mi; Forged M dbl-spokes; Rotex pads; Dinan Stage II Supercharger; Stygar Short Shift Kit and clutch stop; Skaags pedals

Mark is right: this is the hot setup. I've installed 2 sets, one on my M3, one on a friend's 325i. On the M3 I already had the JTD scoops, so used those with the Barry Battle flanges and backing plates. I have measured a 200 deg F reduction in front rotor temps with this setup (one side connected, the other not). I was changing wheel bearings anyway, so took off the stock backing plates at the same time, otherwise see below for a how to. On the 325i we tapped the hoses into the stock brake ducts as suggested by the Bimmerworld web site. But for heavens sake buy a 3" diameter hole saw (around $15 at your friendly neighbourhood hardware store) instead of hacking away by hand as they show. I cut the stock backing plates off with tin snips without much difficulty. These setups have both run about 20 track days this year with entire satisfaction. Neil 96 M3

#9. SSR questions and possible sale - from Gcfuller@aol.com
Top
Date: Tue, 10 Oct 2000 19:34:40 EDT From: Gcfuller@aol.com Subject: SSR questions and possible sale I've been planning to buy a new set of SSR's for awhile now (2-17x8 and 2-17x9), but recently found a set used. They were in good shape, but were all 17x9. The seller SWORE they would fit the front of my 98 M3/4 with tiny 5mm spacers. I've heard spacers (bigger ones, at least) can cause vibration problems, so I was leary, but bought them anyway because I could then rotate front to back and they were worth more. Fast forward to after getting tires mounted and ordering spacers (which came as 10mm by mistake). The front wheels will not rotate. Even with the 10mm spacers, the rim hits the strut. I tried using both spacers on one side and this worked, but vibrated badly. I'm slightly miffed - now what? 1. If I get GOOD 20mm spacers, will this work or am I just asking for trouble? 2. Anyone interested in 2-17x9 SSR's? Then I can buy two new 17x8's (as can you) and be back in business. Or should I just sell the whole set? From what I hear the 17x9's are very hard to get and are much more expensive than the 17x8's (about $350/wheel new vs. $275 for the 8's). 3. I also got 4 G-Forces with the wheels. These are definately for sale. 2 are 245's, 2 are 255's, aprox 50% gone, heat cycled and treated with that "claw" chemical. I'm told they're good for 2 or three more events. I don't know what they're worth or much else about this tire, so throw me an offer. Any help or opinions are appreciated- Greg 98 M3/4 St. Louis
