#1. clutch slippage at 19K miles?? - from Paul Elliott

Date: Wed, 11 Oct 2000 21:54:11 -0400 From: "Paul Elliott" <pelliott@rcn.com> Subject: clutch slippage at 19K miles?? Hi Ron, >>Now Paul, ever hear of _non_destructive testing? <g> I'm 100% positive that given enough of these tests, you'll find exactly what you're looking for - a bad clutch! If it wasn't bad before, it probably is now! If the clutch isn't slipping under normal use or the occasional hard acceleration, don't worry about it. Yes, with a supercharger and "only" 20 timed acceleration runs, you can go through a clutch in a weekend much less 19k miles. -- Ron Katona << Yea, I know, its like a self fullfilling prophecy! I've since come to realize that practically none but a brand new clutch can handle such stress. And the amount of clutch material you burn off while slipping as a result hardly makes it worthwhile...It most certainly is not a non-destructive test, and after I smelled the stench which resulted from it, I felt like quite the dork, and cussed out the genius who suggested the test to me...actually, I found it on that paragon of misinformation, bimmer.org so I should've known better! More prudent is a hard acceleration run up a hill while already in gear, at a high rpm but a low-ish speed for fourth or fifth. And in these tests, it never slips, so I think its probably fine...However, no more 0-60 runs, thank you. Sub 5 second is good enough for me to assure that my setup is working properly...no sense in ruining, it right? Thanks for the 'sensible' advice. _____________________________ Paul Elliott '99 Alpine White M3; <20000 mi; Forged M dbl-spokes; Rotex pads; Dinan Stage II Supercharger; Stygar Short Shift Kit and clutch stop; Skaags pedals _____________________________ Paul Elliott '99 Alpine White M3; <20000 mi; Forged M dbl-spokes; Rotex pads; Dinan Stage II Supercharger; Stygar Short Shift Kit and clutch stop; Skaags pedals

My technician said"i dont like the springs....too much room between the spring and the chassis". I went to the little garage in woodside queens, headvised me to get H And R springs or Dinan. can the eibachs sag or am Iplagued with a haunted rear suspension? I only have 3k miles on the suspension..maybee less. oh also have 18 inch bbs rc's on the car if that makes a difference. Leo alot of money spent and still fustrated..

I'm looking at the picture of the set at the TMS site and it seems they do come with an adjustable lower perch for the rear springs along with the threaded front struts... right? They need to be adjusted for your desired ride height. Depending on the spring rate and length, you may not be able to get much drop, or you might be able to get quite a bit - you'll just have to experiment with that adjustment. Of course, this will cause the alignment to change as well. You could also have the car corner balanced for optimal handling (a big plus for coil-overs), but note that often a good corner balance job will leave the car unlevel. It's usually a pick between having the car perfectly level, or perfectly corner balanced. My car sits about 1/4 high in the left rear and right front, but is exactly 50-50 in cross corner weight with the driver. And you need to decide how the car will be loaded when you level, balance, or align it. You can use the factory loading procedure for alignments, or just go for the weight of the driver if you mostly drive alone or in competition/track days. -- Ron Katona

#4. Brake vibration? - from Ted Telesky

Date: Wed, 11 Oct 2000 23:25:41 -0400 From: Ted Telesky <TTelesky@compuserve.com> Subject: Brake vibration? I just had new rotors and pads put on my car a month ago. (Euro rotors on front, stock on rear, EBC Greenstuff pads - which I dislike now...) I also had the brake fluid replaced. The front brakes seem to vibrate - sometimes worse, and I notice that as the car as almost stopped, I can feel the brakes seem to grab more once on every revolution. Could this be something with the install A warped rotor - though I don't push the car hard and never had a warped rotor with the stock rotors. Thanks Ted

You really want to find a shop locally to try on the helmet. I bought a Shoei open face in Huntington Beach in one size and another Bell closed faced in another size in Burbank. I did pay a premium (about $20 for the Shoei, $50 for the Bell) but for the amount of time they spent explaining the different types of helmets and trying them on, it was worth it because I got a helmet that fits me perfectly. I figure if I mail ordered it, I would've spent about the same in shipping back and forth to get the right size or would've ended up with a helmet of the wrong size. Plus, I believe in supporting local shops if at all possible (most are run by racers that have really good knowledge) -Bobby > -----Original Message----- > From: David Michael [mailto:carieanddavid@mediaone.net] > Sent: Wednesday, October 11, 2000 5:52 PM > To: E36M3 > Subject: [E36M3] tech inspection and helmet in Boston Area? > > > > <snip> > My rotors are warped now, and I will replace them BEFORE I go up. #9. e36m3 firing order/ interest in headers? - from Michael Turgeon

Date: Thu, 12 Oct 2000 06:18:22 -0700 (PDT) From: Michael Turgeon <turgeon1@yahoo.com> Subject: e36m3 firing order/ interest in headers? Hi Gruppe: Could someone tell me the firing order for the e36m3? As a follow-up, I was under the car preparing for a few DS and noticed the said design of the headers, and intermediate pipe before the cats. I am contemplating having a friend who owes me a couple of favors making some stainless headers, collectors and intermediate pipe which would interface very nicely with the remainder of the stock system. If he is making one, he could make more easily. If you are interested let me know privately. This is just to judge any interest level. While you're there, visit the Mountain Sun brewery, they get my seal of approval! Andrej '97 M3
