Date: Thu, 12 Oct 2000 16:26:21 -0500 From: "George M. Kofman" <sdg2@execpc.com> Subject: tire survey.... my $.02 worth... On the street, I run 10-spoke II (staggered) setup with Yoko-ono AVS Sports. On the track, I run a set of 7.5x17 with 235x40x17 Yoko-ono A032R. Comments are as follows: if you can stand the noise, A032r is the best tire for wet track/dry track/street use. it is an R-compound tire and grips fairly well. Turn-in is very crisp and precise. Grip is just awesome. AVS Sport is an awesome rain tire. dry road-holdijng ability is not as good as A032R's, but after .... lapping at Road America on AVS Sports last weekend (*cold* and wet was the forecast) I can attest to how well these STREET tires performed on the track. Granted threshold braking resulted in ABS, unlike A032R's, but overall it is an awesome tire. my vote - A032r on the track, AVS Sport on the street. hard to beat price/performance. They are only slightly less sticky than the Pilot MXX3s For track I run Koenig Villian 8x17 with Yoko A032Rs in 235/40-17 all around -> no rolling, no rubbing. Have done 4x schools on the 1st set and will be able to get 1-2 more schools out of them. Good track performance - outside edges wear fast though, have already had them flipped (inside wall to outside wall) Thomas 98 M3/4 with mods Subject: Wheel/Tire Survey Since I'm now looking at new tires for the '98 E36 M3/4 (presently stock suspension, save sways, and stock wheels/tires, 7.5x17F & 8.5X17R M-Contour IIs), and I'm tired of burning $1,000+ worth of tires at the track and not being able to rotate, I'm looking to get both track wheels/tires and potentially upgrade/replace my street wheels/tires.

#4. E36 M3 Vibromatic steering - from Christopher J. N. Kolaitis

Date: Thu, 12 Oct 2000 18:06:27 -0500 From: "Christopher J. N. Kolaitis" <chrisjnk@ix.netcom.com> Subject: E36 M3 Vibromatic steering Date: Thu, 12 Oct 2000 09:32:18 -0700 From: Kit Wetzler <kitwetzler@mindspring.com> Subject: vibrations... Just put on a new set of BBS RKs, and did a track event on them, because my 17x8.5" m-contours with 245/40r17 G-forces didn't quite fit in front. (grr) (they seem to fit with 5mm spacers, though) I get a vibration on the car between 60 mph and 80mph. I suspect that I have either an out of balance wheel or a slightly bent wheel. The question I have is this: is it possible that the vibration is my wheel bearings? I get a squeak out of the front wheels every once in awhile, but there are no other signs of the wheel bearings going bad. The car has done this squeaking for the past 6000 miles, so I figured that if it was a wheel bearing, it would've gotten worse by now. (3 track events, with a couple of little off track excursions, too) Hi Kit, By any chance do you have spacers on your front wheels? If you are using spacers they tend to contribute to the dreaded front wheel shimmy or vibromatic. You might want to consider a hub centric spacer kit that attached to the hub with a fastener bolt. You can get these kits in different size's from Turner or Dinan (too expensive). Maybe one of the other listers will know of a supplier. Chris, Windy City Chapter 97 M3/4 Dinan daily driver

#6. Brake Vibration - from Paul Elliott

Date: Thu, 12 Oct 2000 21:47:27 -0400 From: "Paul Elliott" <pelliott@rcn.com> Subject: Brake Vibration Ted, >>So what do people recommend for street use in a pad that is quiet, and has low dust? I am ready to go back to stock and deal with the dust..<< Wait, before you do anything That drastic, try my recommendation. I too was tired of the stock dust that ruined my wheels. Because a lot of people seem to use Repco/PBR/Axxis deluxe pads, I gave them a shot, but, they grab much worse than stock, squeel like crazy, especially in the rear, and are very prone to fade....Although, they are the cleanest pads you'll find...Still, they just dont do the M3 justice....Its then that I heeded someone's suggestion and ordered a set of FrictionTech pads from Brake Warehouse in south Carolina...Well, he didnt have Frictiontech at the time, but he said he had a slightly better made pad using a very similar compound in a pad called Rotex. Rotex and Frictiontech are companies formed by guys who left Raybestos in Canada, but took the good compound with them. I find the Rotex to stop with every bit as much bite as stock, but, are much cleaner, are rotor friendly, are squeel free, last a long time, and are just a pleasure to use in agressive street driving...I promise you that, unlike yours and others experience with the EBC pads, you will enjoy the Rotex pads....Theyve been my answer both in my previous 280 hp Volvo 850 Turbo, and in my current supercharged M3, and I dont plan to use anything else! _____________________________ Paul Elliott '99 Alpine White M3; <20000 mi; Forged M dbl-spokes; Rotex pads; Dinan Stage II Supercharger; Stygar Short Shift Kit and clutch stop; Skaags pedals

While you're there, visit the Mountain Sun brewery, they > get my seal of approval! Yep, I hear we Rocky Mtn. folks'll be doing 2002. I don't know if it will be specifically in Boulder. Here's the bad news: Expect to lose > 15% of your power at our altitude. The good news? The Denver/Boulder area has an unbelievable number of microbreweries and brew pubs. Fat Tire Amber, from New Belgium brewery in Ft. Collins absolutely rocks.

#9. Weird tire wear question - from Ted Telesky
Top
Date: Fri, 13 Oct 2000 00:10:01 -0400 From: Ted Telesky <TTelesky@compuserve.com> Subject: Weird tire wear question I had my front tires replaced today. The tires had a weird wear pattern, maybe someone can tell me if this indicates I need new front end/suspension parts. Both tires had a wear band that was about 3/4 of an inch wide and started from the outside edge of the tire, moving towards the center. The weird part was it appeared to be a lip as at the end of the wear pattern the tire bumped up a little rather than being a smooth transition. It looked like the tire was filed. One tire store said the tires started to separate, but the guys who actually replaced them said it was wear. Any thoughts? By the way, total miles on these tires was about 30K. Front end parts have 80K miles. Thanks Ted 95M3

Date: Thu, 12 Oct 2000 23:40:33 -0600 From: "Rob" <motor@cadvision.com> Subject: re: H&R coil-overs. Car sits uneven...+ BBS RK ? Hi Ron, my H&R coil-overs are only height adjustable on the front so I can't adjust them to compensate for the uneveness at the rear. Maybe I can just live with it, but it looks kinda' silly when one side of the rear is still at stock height and the rest of the car is lowered! Also, will 17x8" BBS RK's with a 40mm offset and a 235/40/17 tire clear the H&R coil-overs or do I need spacers? Thanks, Rob
