#2. source for caliper piston lubricant - from Rich Gay

Date: Sat, 14 Oct 2000 16:16:57 -0500 From: "Rich Gay" <rich_gay@linbeck.com> Subject: source for caliper piston lubricant OK, I'm about to tackle a rebuild of the brake calipers, and this time I'd like to use a lubricant on the piston/dust boot to help it all go back together easier than the last time I did this, when I just used brake fluid. Problem is, none of the local auto parts stores stock anything like this, and they all act like they've never heard of such a thing. I asked the local BMW independent shop about this yesterday and they said the brand doesn't matter, just get whatever is available. So, does anyone know a source? - Rich

I have some Raybestos "Brake Assemblyt Lube" (I think it's called that) that I bought at an average auto parts store many years ago. It shouldn't be too hard to find, though I admit it's not altogether commonly found on shelves. You can also use brake fluid -- this brake assembly lube feels like thick brake fluid, and brake fluid is awfully slippery, too. Regards, -- ______________________________________ Andrew E. Is Autocar Mag available in the USA at news stands or only in Europe? By the way, I was at my tire store and they had a November Automobile Magazine with a review of the new M3.. The Automobile magazine web site shows the cover with the M3 on it - no articles yet... I need to pick up one of these too... All very flattering. I guess the fact that WE get the Euro version is the icing on the cake, so to speak. All in all, I still love my American version, e36 M3 and the biggest reason of all, the cockpit styling. I feel like I'm in a "racer," nice and tight...all controls in easy reach. This is from where I view the car most...from the inside-out. The e46 cockpit is too spacious ... made for the general masses (for today's bigger/wider people). The e46 cockpit reminds me of me old Lexus (OK, a mistake from the past, that I do not want to revisit until I'm 80!). Granted, for those of us who autox, 240HP/236ft-lbs. torque is not enough in certain situations and too much for others. Sooo, when is enough, enough? Having said all this, I have sit-up a test drive at my Dealer, when he gets his first 2001 M3...who knows what I'll say then?????? ;-)) Bob Gill 97 ///M3 coupe Philly Region SCCA 1st AS - '97 & '00 mov'in to ESP in '01

Might want to see if H&R has an upgrade for your kit that has an adjustable rear perch; that's the best solution. If not, BMW sells four different thickness rubber pads for the rear springs. You could use a thin one on one side and a thick one (or two) on the other to help level the car. The UUC Motorwerks site (www.uucmotorwerks.com) has the P/Ns for the pads on their tech tips page under "Tire Clearance." > Also, will 17x8" BBS RK's with a 40mm offset and a 235/40/17 tire clear the > H&R coil-overs or do I need spacers? I don't know for sure because tires vary in size between manufacturers, but that's pretty close to the stock configuration so it _should_ fit. In the rear you usually run out of room at the fender lip (which then requires rolling), not the shock or inner fender. The front usually runs out of room first at the strut which then requires a spacer to correct. -- Ron Katona

#10. 96 M3 Rear Swaybar Mount Fracture - from Neil Maller
Top
Date: Sun, 15 Oct 2000 13:10:27 -0500 From: Neil Maller <neil.maller@gte.net> Subject: 96 M3 Rear Swaybar Mount Fracture Put my car up on stands this weekend to look for the knocking noise at the rear, and found that the passenger side swaybar attachment point has snapped off. This attachment point is a tab that's part of the rear subframe (rear axle carrier in BMW-speak). These tabs are known to be weak, and in fact I have been inspecting them periodically for cracking. Apparently not carefully enough... I also note that the spherical ball joints in the RD links now have some play. The car has had the RD swaybars for a couple of years, and is tracked around 20-25 days/year, so all in all this is a disappointing but not that surprising development. Looks as if it's time to replace the subframe (PITA/$$$), and possibly to reinforce the new mounts while it's off the car. A couple of things I recall: - Starting in 98 BMW redesigned the mounts with an angled butress to strengthen the swaybar mounting tabs. - Dinan used to have a weld-in reinforcement. Anyone BTDT or have general words of wisdom to offer? Suggestions for more durable rear links? Neil 96 M3
