#2. brake sensor - from jbergstrom

Date: Mon, 16 Oct 2000 07:58:13 -0500 From: "jbergstrom" <john@intellectsys.com> Subject: brake sensor >>>The sensor wire thingy on the right rear was fine but the one on the left front was frayed in a few places and the end piece is a bit chewed up on one side but I didn't see anything touching that shouldn't be. I took it off completely and the light stayed on. <<< The sensor sounds like it's just worn. You probably have less pad than you think in the front. There is a little part of it that rubs off, and when it does, your brake light will come on. Just replace the sensor. $13.00 from Steve D. at www.ultimategarage.com . It's a 10-minute job. Additionally, in the event I purchase the rubber on-line (Tirerack,Disctire, etc), does your recommended area facility also install even if purchased elsewhere? Date: Mon, 16 Oct 2000 10:50:28 -0400 From: "JUSTIN GERRY" <JGERRY@butchers.com> Subject: Dunlop 8080E I have the Dunlop 8080E tires on my car (Same as M Coupe/Convertible) Anyway, I just finished up the novice portion of the drivers school at NHIS yesterday... (I had a blast!). Anyway, I noticed that my rear tires have small cracks (almost like weather checking or tiny knife slits) in the outside groove of each rear tire. My front tires are ok... There is plenty of tread depth for both rears. The actual tread blocks are scrubbed but look fine. I have the full school coming up on Friday of this week. If I am having problems with the rear tires, I would try to get them replaced. Anybody care to comment on the cracks? I took it off >completely and the light stayed on. I even checked the brake lights and >they >are all fine. Any ideas? the brake sensor thingy is basically a closed loop wire. once the wire frays, it opens the circuit and the brake warning light goes on. it's a very simple system. once the "thingy" goes (frays, breaks, crumbles, etc...) you gotta buy a new one. changing the pads, doesn't matter. the sensor is "used" and needs to be replaced. if your pads are fine, you don't need to worry. unless the light drives you crazy of course. the "thingys" cost $10-$20 depending on where you buy them. _________________________________________________________________________ Get Your Private, Free E-mail from MSN Hotmail at http://www.hotmail.com. #8. Brake pad installation questions - from David Ngo
Top
Date: Mon, 16 Oct 2000 15:31:28 -0400 From: David Ngo <dngo@commvault.com> Subject: Brake pad installation questions Hi everyone, I installed a set of Hawk HPS pads on my '98 M3/4 on Saturday and had a couple of questions. 1. The stock pads for the inside part of the caliper have clips to secure them to the caliper. The rear Hawk pads fit just as securely as the stock pads. However, the front Hawks, though they had a similar clip, did not; if I was to take a front caliper off, then the inside pad would fall out. Is this a problem? Should I bend the tabs on the clip outwards to secure the pads? 2. What is the best way to break in the pads? I know this has been asked and answered before - sorry! I will report on the performance of these pads after I've broken them in. Thanks! Dave --- David Ngo dngo@commvault.com Developer (732) 870-4618 CommVault Systems, Inc.

Should I bend the tabs on the clip outwards to secure the >pads? the clips don't really perform any function. in fact some pads don't even have the clips at all. if your clips are "loose" you'll get some rattling noises, (when you're NOT on the brakes) but the brakes will stop your car just like normal. if you want the rattling to go away, then you can bend the clips to make them hold the pad in place. _________________________________________________________________________ Get Your Private, Free E-mail from MSN Hotmail at http://www.hotmail.com.
