On the other hand, with the additional HP, I find myself taking the longer route home so I don't have to stop as often ;-) For 475 these two things were a worthwhile modification. All BMW's are luxury cars, don't forget >that. i'd be hard pressed to call the M3 lightweight a luxury car. with no sunroof, no cruise control, no radio, no leather seats, non power seats, no tilt wheel, no auto dimming mirrors, no nav system it's not very "luxury". >Most of the car rags I have read say that this easily out handles the E36. >A lot >of this has to do with the MUCH stiffer chassis and that newly designed >///M rear differential. Don't bash it before you try it. I think you'll be >pleasantly >surprised. for racing, weigh is bad. (alex is a racer, and is looking for a race car, not a fun fast street car) the e36 "outhandles" the e30, according to car rags too, but having driven both in race car form, i like the way the e30 handles better. more tossable, easier to drive, less fatiguing, easier to recover from messes, easier on tires, easier on brakes, and on and on. even if the e46 does the "slalom" better, because the chassis/suspension is stiffer, the extra 500 lbs is a BIG deal in a race car. why? because an e36 race car and an e46 race car are the same "stiffness". once you build a roll cage into a car, they're all stiff as titanium. it doesn't matter how stiff the original chassis was. and once you slap race coilovers onto a car, they're all as stiff. it doens't matter how stiff the original suspension was. so now all you have with the e46 is a heavier car with a bigger engine. for long tracks that's good. for short tracks, that's BAD! note: in the SCCA ITS class both e36s and e30s race along side each other. and e36s don't do that much better. in fact, on short courses, the e30 is a little better. less HP, worse suspension, yada yada yada, on short courses the weight savings of the old e30 pays off in spades. i'd expect the same thing in e36/e46 comparisons. not to say you shouldn't try it. but it sure looks bad on paper (as a race car) for street driving, and BMW CCA track evnets, i'm sure the e46 will be "better, faster, stronger". but for racing, i'm not so sure. _________________________________________________________________________ Get Your Private, Free E-mail from MSN Hotmail at http://www.hotmail.com. Tunnell plays with it...not if that weight number is correct....Solo II courses require transient response, and nimbleness.......that's why little LTW Honda's etc can run damn fast.....a 3400 lb M3 will be a barge autocrossing....I'm with you...I'm in NO HURRY to get on a wait list for the E46M3 in it's current dress...Give me the lightweight version with the V-8... Oh I'll pay 10K more, just think 3150 approx lbs with 400 HP.....Now that's a worthy successor to the current car..... In it's current setup were finally getting the "euro" motor but weight kills.....What really cracks me up is why doesn't BMW allow us to delete standard equipment off the car on a pre-order...... Venting, yeah I know I'm venting.....M is for marketing.....yadda, yadda..... I'm REALLY HOPING FOR A LIMITED RUN OF REAL M3's! You should see some of the Porsche 914s and 2002s at the autoXs.
