Can someone let me know who does this and what is included in such a rebuild? Is is to some spec or is this someone who specializes in rebuilding? David Holeman www.racepad.com

#2. Dyno #'s for stock vs Euro HFM ?? - from Rob

Date: Fri, 20 Oct 2000 18:06:32 -0600 From: "Rob" <motor@cadvision.com> Subject: Dyno #'s for stock vs Euro HFM ?? Here is the question of the day, and maybe someone has a dyno sheet to answer... 1995 3.0L M3 What would the HP/TQ difference between these two set-ups be? Intake (ECIS or Jim C), Jim C chip & cat-back exhaust vs Intake (ECIS or Jim C), Jim C chip, Euro HFM & cat-back exhaust Also, I've never heard it mentioned that the Euro HFM softens the bottem end or causes a low RRM torque loss but I've always wondered about that... I had the above mentioned Euro set-up on my last '95 M3 and it was great but I made the mistake of doing it all at the same time so I couldn't say what parts really made the power. thanks, Rob

Here are the final stock part number for a 1995M3 so you might avoid the hassles I went through. Also, Nick Alexander's parts department hasn't a clue, so you need to know what you are buying when you see them. Centruy West BMW knew exactly what I needed - they have always seemed to be on the ball - I wish their prices were less! Front right strut = 31-31-2-226-988 Front left strut = 31-31-2-226-987 As I mentioned before, I was told the 5 digit from the right indicates Motorsport parts if it is a "2". Again, thanks to everyone. Ted

I just finished watching the Speedvision GT race from Road Atlanta(?) and I swear the red E36 M3 (placed around 3rd) was running the stock M3 muffler!. I couldn't tell on Peter Cunningham's car. Can anyone confirm? You'd think of all people a race team would be the first to repalce the muffler if it was a power robber? Hmmm, Rob

I am trying to stay close to $20k and want a 5-speed. I have cash for a very quick sale and live in Louisville, KY. Would prefer Avus blue, black, red, silver, or green. Mileage does not matter that much, but I want the condition to be at least OK and commensurate with price. Don't tell me about Suzy's car...she is probably out of my league! One more thing. What is the difference between Daytona and Techno Purple??? Thanks. Gary Preece BMWCCA #158110

Unfortunately, I had pinging below 3500 or so RPM. I am grateful for our crappy California gas ;-( Any suggestions on what I should do with this pinging engine of mine? As a precaution, I went back to the stock chip, but I am open to suggestions. Bora

#8. 96 Trailing Arm Mounting Pad Failure - from Robert Biggs
Top
Date: Sat, 21 Oct 2000 22:49:05 -0500 From: "Robert Biggs" <parm3@home.com> Subject: 96 Trailing Arm Mounting Pad Failure This may be old news but I believe it bears repeating. I have been experiencing erratic handling characteristics with my 96 M3 for the past six months. The rear end has been unstable and, worse, unpredictable. Both Scott Hughes and TC Kline drove my car at Mid-Ohio several weeks ago. Scott described it as treacherous. TC also thought something was amiss with the suspension. He took it to his shop in Columbus and ruled out a number of potential problems. As a last alternative, he suggested I replace the rear trailing arm bushings (I had already replaced them earlier this spring) . In the course of changing the rear bushings, I found the problem. The forward end of the rear trailing arm mounting plate (also called the toe adjuster plate mounting pad) attaches to the body with three 18mm bolts. The bolts thread into a threaded tube and the tube is tack welded in two or three spots around the outer circumference to the body. These welds crack and then PULL OUT OF The BODY. In my case, two of the three bolts were pulling away from the body and the problem existed on both sides of the car. Since the suspension was no longer securely mounted to the body, any heavy inputs (acceleration, braking, cornering) caused the rear end to be more than just "twitchy". In an earlier Club Racing Tech Bulletin, it was recommended that a good, solid 360 degree weld on all six tube inserts be completed to provide adequate reinforcement. This must be done by a skilled welder with mig or preferably tig welding equipment. It should be noted that this is much easier to repair as a preventative measure than after the pad tears out of the body. So, based on my experience, I would encourage all of you E36 M3 track addicts to check your trailing arm mounting pads and your rear bushings carefully. I wasted six months fretting and fussing with sway bar settings, spring rates, shock settings and tire pressures. Bob Biggs 96 M3/2
