Yes, the mileage does suffer when the compressor runs. And not everyone lives in the Pacific Northwest where it is always raining. Some places there isn't much moisture in the air, so why take the hit on mileage? - Rich

#2. Power Steering System Leaks - from Robert Jackowitz

Date: Tue, 31 Oct 2000 16:24:46 -0500 From: Robert Jackowitz <RJackowitz@HARVPART.COM> Subject: Power Steering System Leaks Have any of you experienced any problems with your power steering system? For the second time in as many years, I have developed a major leak at a particular fitting (where the rubber hose from the reservoir connects to the metal fitting) and my system will no longer hold fluid. Luckily I'm still under warranty. Any one else experience similar problems? Anyone know what might cause these problems or cause the fitting to fail prematurely? Thanks, Rob '97

I'll be checking and possibly replacing bearings on a few M3's this Saturday if anyone wants to see how its done. Replacement bearing and nut is $105.00 per side....replacement of the inner dust cap is generally not necessary. This seems to be a common failure item. My 328i had all the hoses replaced, only to have the same thing happen a year later. I don't know how wise this was, but I used power steering leak sealer, and it hasn't leaked since. My M3 is exhibiting the same problem now, and I'm going to attempt to get the hoses fixed, but I'm doubtful the fix will last... -peterg

And many others seemed to agree with Sean but....I try not to use my air conditioning if I do not have to (I use it to cool the interior in the summer and to defog at other times if a little heat doesn't do the job) and I have to remember to turn it on every once in a while to lubricate the A/C system. Why you may ask, well, I hate to have the inside of my car with no humidity since my eyeballs dry out. This is especially true when the defrost is blowing right into them with nice hot dry air. Contacts are a bitch at times but until I opt for going under the knife/laser, I try not to use the A/C if I do not have to. One data point. Regards, Rich

They're trying to get you to use BMW dealer service once your warranty runs out. What earns more money? Parts or labor? You're still going to have to pay for labor...it's just the replacement part that's free. But they aren't going to cut you some slack...they're still going to make you pay for the replacement part the first time around. My uncle's fuel pump just went out on his Yukon the other day....just 20 days after his warranty ran out. So he had the dealer replace it (paid for labor and parts) and now he has a lifetime warranty on the fuel pump. If it should break again, he would only have to pay for labor. BTW, the GM service rep said that fuel filters should be replaced every 10k. I'm not sure why everyone here told me not to worry. The fuel filter is cheap...sure it may be a bitch to swap out, but I did it anyway at 15k miles. I'm itching to cut that sucker open and see what's inside ;) Chester > << I thought many parts are lifetime once you bite the bullet and pay for > :>the part and labor the first time around.
