Date: Thu, 2 Nov 2000 23:55:32 EST From: LoweSeaton@aol.com Subject: Valentine One Does Auto Dim I'll be darned!! You learn something every day. I bought my V-1 in July 1997. I never noticed that it self dims at night <g> I must be blind. All right Jim, fess up. How did you do it? We got onto Brent case when he teased us with his one touch close sunroof. Your turn. Let's have a detailed write up so any idiot (i.e., a structural engineer like me) could do it. Have fun! OK, let me try to redeem myself. Everybody knows that the backlight for the On-Board-Computer also automatically dims? Me neither! I owned my M3 for 3 years before I learned. The photo cell is located at the 165 mph mark on the speedometer. As far as I know, it only dims the OBC light. The dash lights seem to be controlled manually. Lowell Seaton '95 M3/2 Dallas, Texas

Date: Fri, 3 Nov 2000 02:42:29 EST From: LoweSeaton@aol.com Subject: Re: [E36M3] Dinan Chip question Bora, You have a '95 M3? Then you just need to change the computer chip. No programming necessary. You are thinking of the '96 and newer models. They have OBD-II and need to be reprogrammed. The only question for '95 M3's is whether or not you have the theft deterrent system EWS. Cars produced 1/95 and later have EWS. 12/94 and earlier do not have EWS. Regarding Dinan chips. I have a '95 M3. I bought a Dinan chip before I knew about Jim Conforti. I still own the Dinan chip. I haven't sold it. I don't like it and don't recommend it. Dinan works OK but Jim Conforti's chip is better and cheaper. What's wrong with Dinan chips? I've dyno'ed my M3 with the Dinan chip and JimC chip. The Dinan chip actually made 0.5 HP more. More HP is better right? Not always. My take is the Dinan chip is tuned for wide open throttle at maximum rpm. Dinan tunes to make the biggest peak numbers. To do that, Dinan sacrifices lower and mid range performance. The only time Dinan beat my JimC chip was from 5,500 rpm to 6,000 rpm. Anything below 5,500 rpm, JimC's chip made slightly more HP and significantly more torque. The Dinan HP curve was fairly flat and then spiked up at 5,000 rpm. Whereas the JimC curve was almost linear rise. This explained my seat of the pants feeling driving on the street. I thought the Dinan chip was stronger driving. I would accelerate and then when I hit about 5,000 rpm, BAM!! I would take off. JimC is more smooth steady power increase. Dinan gave a false sense of power. The other reason I much prefer JimC's chip vs Dinan is JimC does a much better job of modulating the fuel cut off when you coast in gear. You don't have the herky jerky action with JimC that you get with Dinan or stock. And JimC has a slightly higher rev limit. So......If you have pinging with the JimC chip, I doubt you will be better off with the Dinan. I would save your money. I suppose I could send you my Dinan chip if you really really wanted to try Dinan. But I would try contacting Jim Conforti to see if he could make you a special computer chip. I think he has helped other guys out that had unique problems. If you live in an area that has RFG, that is most of your problem. I bet if you ran a tank of non-reformulated gasoline, your M3 would not ping. Hope that helps. Lowell Seaton '95 M3/2 Dallas, Texas

#3. Shift Knob and Other Ramblings - from LoweSeaton@aol.com

Date: Fri, 3 Nov 2000 03:00:51 EST From: LoweSeaton@aol.com Subject: Shift Knob and Other Ramblings OK, bare with me. It's 2:00 am and I've already put in 50+ hours at work this week and looks like I will get in another 20 before the week is over :( Thanks to Jim and Ron for the info on 4-way light switches. I now know more about light switches than I know what to do with. While I was searching Dale's web site for the 4-way switch info I discovered a couple of interesting things. I have 10 of my posts on Dale's site. Cool! And I found this pic: http://www.unofficialbmw.com/images//yeeeha.gif I had almost forgotten that commercial. VBG Anybody willing to make a shift knob insert? I'll gladly buy one. Just name your price. I've wasted lots of money on Dinan chips and intakes. I can afford a little silliness. Thanks!! You want to be careful separating the porkchops b/c the plastic may break rather than separating, especially if they are relatively new. HTH. There's a correction that I haven't gotten around to fixing: My tech and I couldn't get the aluminum piece to fit, so we left it off and used a wooden slat. Turns out my auto-tranny cooling lines are in the way. The piece will have to be notched, but the folded edge has defeated all our available cutting tools (anyone want to lend me a plasma torch? <g>). Bottom line - on the off chance your M3 is a stick shift <g>, ignore the "this part won't fit" section. I don't question other motives you may have for the change, but if you're doing it to avoid pinging, save your money. My car pings and knocks, I swear it sounds like a piggybank! I agree totally with the previous post as to the performance of the Dinan chip. For everyday driving it's just not worth it. Unless you're getting into acceleration runs where you're redlining constantly, you won't notice a THING. Nada de nada. It's around 5K RPM where you slowly start to inch away from other more pedestrian cars... (which embarrasses you like hell in the process). Save your $300 or $400 and apply them elsewhere. FWIW, I had the JC chip on mine for a while but with the stock intake setup. Didn't notice much either. I'm still mystified by this whole chip thing. Maybe someday I'll get it... I use seat covers from http://www.seatsavers.com/ (pic of darth vader seat on site). The headrest just pulls out. Raise it to the maximum height, then push up some more. You may need to tilt the seat back to be able to pull the headrest out. Andrej '97 M3
