#4. [E36M3] JC Euro Intake and Pinging - from RogRacer@aol.com
Top
Date: Fri, 3 Nov 2000 21:51:02 EST From: RogRacer@aol.com Subject: [E36M3] JC Euro Intake and Pinging I just installed the JC Euro Intake set-up on my '95. Great kit and great instructions...the fit of the parts is exceptional, and I enjoyed the install process. Anyway, I was a little worried before the install about this issue of "pinging". My car, in stock trim, would occasionally ping under heavy throttle in the 3-4K rpm range. But it seemed to vary from tank-to-tank of gas, so I didn't worry too much about it. When it did ping, it would only do it for a second or so and then stop, which I assume was the knock sensors kicking in. Now that I have the JC Euro Intake installed, the pinging seems to be significantly worse. Of course, I've only had the kit on for about 3 hours, so I haven't given it a fair chance. Soon, I'll fill up with another brand of gas (I normally use Mobil) and see how that does. Anyway, my question is: Why don't the knock sensors detect this and prevent it? Does the Conforti chip tunning defeat the knock sensors in any way...or does he allow more pinging in his program? TIA, Roger W. Graves RogRacer@aol.com '95 M3, JC Euro Intake, but might have a pinging problem

Date: Fri, 3 Nov 2000 20:01:32 -0800 From: "Kit Wetzler" <kitwetzler@mindspring.com> Subject: spark plugs sorry to rehash this, but: I just got some spark plugs for my M3 from Steve G at the Ultimate Garage. However, they're different than the ones that the car came with. The car came with Bosch F7LDCR. Steve sent me Bosch FGR8KQC. They are pretty different looking plugs. The ones on the car have 2 ground straps and the ones that steve sent me have 4. Plus, the ground straps on the plugs that the car came with come pretty close to the electrode and the FGR8KQC's don't come nearly as close. Also... the '8' is a hotter plug. Is this going to increase the chance of detonation? aiya. Anyone in the bay area need a set of the FGR8KQC's? I'd rather not pay for postage all the way back to Ultimate Garage. -kit 97 M3/4 http://www.mindspring.com/~kitwetzler

I have searched the archives for this and apparently this happens right at the edge between knock and no knock. And trust me, if your car was doing it, you would be able to hear it. It sounds like loose marbles inside the engine. You can hear it by turning off the radio, driving by a walled freeway, opening your windows and flooring the gas when the engine is only turning 2K RPMs or so in 5th gear. Could it be that he has a bad butt dyno? Yes, very likely. I initially thought my Dinan chip was stronger than the JimC chip until I dyno'ed them both. Then I discovered the JimC chip has a much higher and broader torque curve. The Dinan chip hits like a ton of bricks after 5,500 rpm. It fooled me into thinking it was the stronger chip. You really have to dyno your car to get a true comparison. Lowell Seaton '95 M3/2 Dallas, Texas

#11. My retarded looking car (i.e. HID stuff) - from Chester Wong
Top
Date: Fri, 3 Nov 2000 23:20:12 -0800 (PST) From: Chester Wong <chester_p_wong@yahoo.com> Subject: My retarded looking car (i.e. HID stuff) Hi guys. Well...I've been researching this POS topic for a while now. UGH! So....when Ben first came out with plans to retrofit Ford parts, I jumped at the opportunity (thanks, Ben). I ordered the parts, but when I got them, I realized that the bulb + ignitor assembly was too long for my euro lamps. I retrofitted them onto the stock lamps I had lying around and swapped them with a fellow list member so that I could have a set of stock lights again and not have to eat the cost of the Ford parts. Well, then some of you might have remembered the little tidbit of Hella producing a one-off headlamp assembly where they measured the D2S HID bulb and machined an adapter that would place the bulb in the ideal place w.r.t the reflector. Well, I got my sticky little hands on that lamps! Well, I found out the the Hella lamps (actually made by Hella...not ZKW nor Bosche) were much different than the ZKW euro lamps. The lens was still glass, but the low beam is like a flashlight like stock (although there is the sharp cutoff...) and not a polyellipsoid projector lamp like the ZKW. Also, whenever I opened the dustcap on my euros (ZKW), I was always impressed with the reflectors in there. The Hella ones were plastic reflectors...bleh! Well, a bad thing happened to the lamps during transit. UPS dropped the box....several times. One HID bulb broke. One ballast connector broke and all the mounting tabs broke. So much for that, huh? Well, I'm still settling the thing with UPS insurance. Anyway, so I was sitting on three pairs of standard BMW ballasts and D2S bulbs for a while. I never liked the idea of cutting up my H1 mounting base so I searched for an alternative solution. Bellof.com came as close as possible where this Japanese company manufactures their own HID bulb with a molded plastic base that supposedly mimics an H1. Downsides? - Expensive $1200 for the kit - Quality, consistency (color, etc) are as good as the Phillips bulbs and ballasts - Expensive $250 for a replacement HID bulb - Bulb diameter would probably mean that you still had to shave a little off here and there...no biggie. So...after looking at everything, I was still going to continue with my plan on making an aluminum adapter to sit on the euro reflector to align everything up. Well, after thinking about it for a while, it didn't make sense since you had to do a lot of cutting to prepare for the adapter or any other arrangement. So I thought that a little extra screw would be fine to secure the bulb into place. Also, how often do you adjust the bulb position or change the bulb? So I just started carving away at my reflector yesterday night. The results of everything is here: http://albums.photopoint.com/j/AlbumIndex?u=838931&a=6713718 I only had enough time to do one side of the car so I was able to take some comparison photos ;) Enjoy!, Chester BTW, anyone who has a E46 w/ xenons, please e-mail me. I would ask here, but it's OT and I can't ask on the UUC digest because I was kicked off. ===== __________________________________________________ Do You Yahoo!? Thousands of Stores. #13. Re: [E36M3] JC Euro Intake and Pinging - from LoweSeaton@aol.com
Top
Date: Sat, 4 Nov 2000 02:31:16 EST From: LoweSeaton@aol.com Subject: Re: [E36M3] JC Euro Intake and Pinging Roger and Paul ask about the knock sensors. Rats!! We need Jim Conforti to answer this one. To answer Roger's question, I know JimC has said his programming does not change or effect the knock sensors in anyway. As for why the knock sensors don't hear the knock before we do and the DME retard the timing? I'll speculate that the DME does not initially know how much to retard the timing when the knocking first starts. It goes through an iterative process. For example, maybe it pulls down the timing 1 degree, then checks to see if the knocking is still occurring. If yes, then it pulls down the timing 1 more degree. If that is not enough, then it pulls down the timing another degree. Then another degree, then another degree, then another degree, then another degree, etc...... Until the knocking finally stops. But by this time, you have heard the knocking. And the threshold for the knocking is constantly changing. If you ease up on the gas, the knocking probably will stop. Or if you give it more throttle, more knocking. The DME never knows how much to retard the timing so it has to guess. If it guesses wrong, then you hear the knocking. OK, that is my guess. Anybody else? Lowell Seaton '95 M3/2 Dallas, Texas
