Having a high-boost turbo I tried them just to see for myself if there was a point where they would help when I couldn't get my hands on the right fuel. I wasn't very sucessful. I'm just a single data point but it's info, none the less. I need to run 96 octane ( I blend Racing fuel with 92 octane Checron ) to prevent pre-detonation. I tried to see how many bottles of "104+ Octane Booster" I had to pour into a tank to make 92 octane into 96. I gave up at three. Keep in mind this was with a gallon or two of 96 blend left in a 16 gallon tank. I needed more than 92 octane to make up for boost and there are of course different MON and RON numbers (MON ounts most in this case) in every gasoline. While the average R+M/2 number may come out to 92, the individual measures may vary up or down. That said, if one particular gasoline pings, try another. So if Chevron pings, try Mobil or Texaco, etc. In the end though, if a motor is pinging on 92 octane, something might be wrong. Perhaps the head was milled at sometime? Carbon buildup? Timing slightly advanced due to wear or unknown cam gear changes? Lots of things. If your motor is just a special one that likes octanes above 92 or whatever is in your area, you can blend in racing fuel which will raise the octane number and or look for the real cause. Most cars take to a chip readily without pinging. Some may not. Turned out to be a sticking relay that didn't disconnect when the ignition was switched off. Could be something along the same line in your car I suppose. In the E24, turning the car on and repeatedly pushing and releasing the aircon button would stop it. I always made sure to check that before walking away. In my case the inside circulating fan also continued to run. I had a similar complaint on a M3 a few weeks ago with the auxiliary fan still running when the engine was shuf off. I didn't find any shorts but I inspected both the normal and high speed relays which are in the power distribution box. I opened them up and found a burnt mark on the relay. This can cause it to stick and have continous battery power running thru the system. I believe the normal speed relay is the relay closet to the fender on the far right side (purple) and the high speed relay is on the same row but far left side (yellow). Please let me know what you find out later! Jonathan Caldito

Dinan makes no differentiation for plug use, so I'm tempted to continue with the factory rated plugs, like the one Steve ships....So far, there's been no ill effect after a year's use with the SC, and it runs like a champ.. thanks. _____________________________ Paul Elliott '99 Alpine White M3; <25000 mi; Forged M dbl-spokes; Rotex pads; Dinan Stage II Supercharger; Stygar Short Shift Kit and clutch stop; Skaags pedals
