#1. atp type 5 wheels - from russell

Date: Sat, 4 Nov 2000 20:51:36 -0800 (PST) From: russell <driver8m3@yahoo.com> Subject: atp type 5 wheels i bought(4) 8.5 x 17 atp type 5 wheels with 245/40 kumho tires. i tried to put the wheels on today....small problem; getting some rubbing up front. the rim is rubbing the metal tower...and the tire is rubbing a bit when the wheel is turned. i've put my rear 8.5" stock wheel up front previously, with only minor tire rubbing. and i'm sure i remember other list members saying that they're running 8.5" contours up front also. i thought the m-contour wheels were the same as these. i guess they're not.... anyway....does anyone else have the 8.5" atp type 5 wheels on the front of their car? if so, what size spacers are you using, if any???? any info would be appreciated..... thanks russell '99 dakar ===== "...extremism in the defense of liberty is no vice, moderation in the pursuit of justice is no virtue."--bg __________________________________________________ Do You Yahoo!? #2. Chimes - from ENF

Date: Sun, 5 Nov 2000 07:52:35 -0500 From: "ENF" <enf@iglou.com> Subject: Chimes Is anyone familiar with the chime indicators in the M3 (like the ones that come on when you first start the car)? As I was driving this morning (35deg F outside) I got one single chime that caught me off guard. No other indications or warnings just a single chime. I was just wondering if there are specific audio indicators for certain conditions that I should check into (I know that the seat belts chime, light buzz if I leave them on). The only thing different I noticed was when I checked the outside temp the "F" flashed on the display for awhile the went steady. No other problems noticed. Ed Frank enf@iglou.com 97M3/4

#9. Do I need a new clutch? - from Mark Kern
Top
Date: Sun, 5 Nov 2000 15:44:12 -0800 From: "Mark Kern" <markkern@home.com> Subject: Do I need a new clutch? A few days ago, I let a friend drive my E36 M3 (12k miles). In a spirited moment, he launched the car from a light and *really* rode the clutch in 1st gear as he accelerated to the redline (ASC was off). There was a nice burning smell, which at first we both believed to be the rear tires. However, I suspect that the smell was wafting from the front of the car and not the rear. The smell lasted for several minutes as we continued to drive. When I drive now, the clutch doesn't slip, but it certainly doesn't have that biting grip that it used to. The point at which the clutch engages seems softer and broader, not the solid 1/2 to 1 inch of pedal movement it used to feel like. So my question is...is my clutch worn out, or merely suffering form accelerated aging and not yet due for a replacement? If I do need a new one, how much is a clutch job from the dealer these days? While I'm at it, would it be a good time to add an aluminium flywheel (brand recommendations?)? And last, but not least, does launching the car by popping the clutch (say at 3200 RPM) do more or less wear than the above described incident? Sorry for the slew of questions...I thought I only had one until I thought about it. :) - Mark
