Your clutch is probably glazed. A week or two of non-abusive driving should return it to normal. It's life has been reduced by a few thousand miles. Dropping the clutch causes much less wear on friction surface (assuming it holds..if it starts to slip then it will still tear it up.) But.. dropping the clutch has a higher probability of damaging some other component (drive shaft, guibo, tranny, rear hald shafts, etc). Also there's some probability of breaking the clutch (I broke the center springs in my 944 turbo's $2k clutch with too many drag starts at AutoX.) The clutch kit itself goes for around $400 I believe. I don't know about labor. I'd be surprised if the whole operation is more than $1k. I've heard good things about active autowerke's flywheel. -Matt '95 M3 + turbo --- Mark Kern <markkern@home.com> wrote: > Date: Sun, 5 Nov 2000 15:44:12 -0800 > From: "Mark Kern" <markkern@home.com> > Subject: Do I need a new clutch? > > A few days ago, I let a friend drive my E36 M3 (12k > miles). #5. Do I need a new clutch? - from Paul Elliott

Date: Sun, 5 Nov 2000 23:13:44 -0500 From: "Paul Elliott" <pelliott@rcn.com> Subject: Do I need a new clutch? Mark, >>A few days ago, I let a friend drive my E36 M3 (12k miles). In a spirited moment, he launched the car from a light and *really* rode the clutch in 1st gear as he accelerated to the redline (ASC was off). There was a nice burning smell...<< With just 12K miles on your M3, I highly doubt you need to start worrying about replacing your clutch at this point. I think that, while not doubt you've worn it somewhat, there's a difference between 'worn' and 'worn out'. Some time ago, I had been doing some GTech 0-60 runs, and on a couple of runs, did some very agressive 1-2 powershifts at near 7K. Well, I want to tell you, the clutch stunk all the way home...And, on one of those powershifts, I didnt feel the sudden gear engagement I had been used to feeling, but rather felt what seemed like a prolonged clutch-slip all the way to second gear redline! I thought for sure my clutch had had it. But, now several thousand miles later, while I wouldnt expect to be turning any more sub 5 second 0-60s with my current clutch, I still think I'm several thousand miles away from replacing....During normal and spirited driving, it still grabs fine...I still can leave second gear rubber if I'm testing, so I dont think its worn out. Youll know when its gone...Youll start on a hill, and first will just slip all the way up. Or, you wont be able to catch second gear rubber do to the slipping. Just try and stay away from the powershifts, and you should be ok for a while. _____________________________ Paul Elliott '99 Alpine White M3; <25000 mi; Forged M dbl-spokes; Rotex pads; Dinan Stage II Supercharger; Stygar Short Shift Kit and clutch stop; Skaags pedals

#8. SCCA car classification - from George M. Kofman
Top
Date: Mon, 6 Nov 2000 09:03:35 -0600 From: "George M. Kofman" <sdg2@execpc.com> Subject: SCCA car classification I would appreciate your help by posting this message on the E30 and E36 boards, and urging BWM owners and aficionados to write to the SCCA at seb@scca.org. Last year, the SCCA SOLO II advisory committee agreed to reclassify the E30 M3 from A Stock, where it tries to compete with Honda S2000s, Porsche 968s and E36 M3s, to G Stock, where the car would compete with Acura Integra Type Rs, the Diamond Star Turbo Coupes, and other similar small displacement sporty cars. The G Stock move would have allowed M3 owners to finally have a change to be competitive, and maybe win once in a while. Well, now the SCCA is rethinking this decision. The SCCA apparently now proposes to keep the car in A Stock, where it has been hopelessly uncompetitive. There is simply no way an E30 M3 is going to keep up with an E36 M3, on any kind of course. If you agree, and would like to see the E30 compete with cars of its ilk, then please write a letter and Email it to the SCCA at seb@scca.org. Believe me, there are plenty of people who don't want to see the E30 M3 become competitive. They are already bending the SCCA's ear on this matter. Only with your help will the SCCA keep its original commitment to reclassifying the E30 and finally, after nearly a decade, allowing it to be competitive. Thank you in advance for your help. GMK '97 ///M3/4, posting this for a friend. Please forward.

#9. JTD RSM - first impression..... - from George M. Kofman
Top
Date: Mon, 6 Nov 2000 10:31:18 -0600 From: "George M. Kofman" <sdg2@execpc.com> Subject: JTD RSM - first impression..... Okay gang; I replaced the RSM on my '97 ///M3/4 with JTD (track). First off, this was a BITCH of a job. Forget the 2-2.5 hours. No friggen way. Perhaps a 4 door is a little tougher. It took a while to get all the carpeting and flooring out. About 30 pounds worth... Then I had a fight with the CD Changer. had to take it out. BTW, did you all know that the HK speakers have 3 screws holding them down, not two ? They must weigh 5# each.... also, what appears to be the amp is stowed on the drivers side in the trunk. All said, I was glorious in my attempt. other than a "funny looking" plastic braket that was used to cover something by the CD Changer that I have no clue how to put back. any ideas ? Road test - low speed was fine. no more rattles over bumps. old EOM bushings were shot, with the passenger side being the worst. slightly higher speed, cornering under throttle - the car seems to edge towards oversteer. could it be cold tires, cold temps and an empty fuel tank ? I will try this later this aft with a full tank. but this morning I nearly broke loose the rear end twice. pulling out of Starbucks, and then on the on-ramp. after that, I just took it easy. I am running JTD track RSMs.... Any suggestions ? GMK '97 MMM 3/4
