Date: Tue, 14 Nov 2000 11:44:16 -0500 From: "Thomas E. Tice" <tetice@worldnet.att.net> Subject: Euro Headlight Lens Does anyone know if you can replace just the lens of a Euro headlight ('98 M3)? I have one that is broken and am hoping I don't have to replace the entire assembly. If this is possible, any recommendations on a good supplier and approx. how much will I have to pay for this piece. TIA, Tom Tice '98 M3/4 '99 540/6

#2. Winter tires - from David Ripton

Date: Wed, 15 Nov 2000 00:27:51 -0500 From: David Ripton <dripton@wizard.net> Subject: Winter tires My first winter with an M3 sedan is coming up, and I'm looking for hints on winter tires. I'm in the DC area, where we usually only see a handful of truly snowy days per winter, so it kinda seems like overkill to spend much time thinking about this. But it only takes one... The first choice is 16" or 17" wheels. I'll go with 16" based on cost. Tire Rack has two reasonably priced 16" alloys that will clear M3 brakes, the ATP Type 5 (M-contour lookalikes) for $155 and Mille Miglia Spiders (flared 5-spokes) for $139. I like the Type 5s. The two sizes that should fit best on those wheels are 205/55-16 and 225/50-16. Obviously the 205s will be cheaper and better in snow, and the 225s will be better in dry. Here are the tires I'm considering: Bridgestone Blizzak LM-22 205/55HR-16 $111 225/50HR-16 $139 Dunlop SP Winter Sport M2 205/55HR-16 $115 225/50HR-16 $123 Michelin Pilot Alpin 205/55HR-16 $105 225/50HR-16 $124 Pirelli Winter 210 SnowSport 205/55HR-16 $144 225/50HR-16 $146 Bridgestone Blizzak MZ-01 205/55QR-16 $ 97 225/50QR-16 $118 Dunlop Graspic DS-1 205/55QR-16 $ 75 225/50QR-16 $ 88 Michelin Arctic Alpin 205/55QR-16 $ 86 Yokohama Guardex 720 205/55QR-16 $ 87 225/50QR-16 $105 What are people's thoughts on H-rated "winter performance" tires versus Q-rated pure snow tires? 205/55 versus 225/50? Any positive or negative experience with any of the above tires? Thanks. -- David Ripton dripton@wizard.net

Date: Sun, 14 Nov 1999 22:17:02 -0800 From: Steve <sgrigory@pacbell.net> Subject: Re: M3 WHEEL QUESTION I have a 95 M3, Dinan Stage III suspension. The front is just a tad lower than stock and it has mild camber plates. The rear is noticably lower than stock. I have the 96+ style, 8.5-inch 10-spokes on all four corners with 245/40 Pilots. No spacers, no fender rolling. The front is fine, no rubbing at all. The right rear seems to be rubbing on the plastic shroud on the Koni shock a bit. I'm not sure yet though. The pilot has a pretty big rubber lip on it to protect the wheel from curb rash so perhaps this is rubbing on the shock shroud a bit. I rotated the shroud the other day and plan to re-check it in a few weeks. steve > Date: Tue, 14 Nov 2000 16:21:54 -0500 > From: "B Horlacher" <Horlacher@carrindustries.net> > Subject: M3 WHEEL QUESTION > > Will the rear wheels on a 96+ M3 work on the front without rubbing? Can you fit a 17x9" rim in the front with a 255/40/17 (or a 245/40/17 for > that matter)? well for a data point, I tried to put a set of 8.5" contours on the front of my 97 M3/4 with 245/40r17 BFG R1a's and they didn't fit. Even with a 5mm spacer I get some polishing... :( with my 17x8 bbs RK's 40mm offset, a 245/40r17 AVS Sport fits just fine with no rubbing. -kit, who thinks his 10mm spacers are sitting on his porch

Mine was a ZKW, got the lens from Bakers for $96 plus shipping. The tab on the lens that holds in the turn signal didn't quite lock the turn signal in place. At the next autocross, the turn signal fell out and was dangling by the wire. The fix was to trim the tab, so it would mate correctly with the turn signal. A good place for Ed to start driver schools would be the excellent Putnam Park track about 45 min west of Indy. Both Bluegrass and Hoosier hold schools there. Neil 96 M3

I've been running 17x8.5" wheels on my M3 at the track for a few years, and lately have been using Hoosier 245/40/17 tires. I don't need spacers up front, and only get a slight bit of polishing on the spring perch. These particular wheels have a 41mm offset. - Rich

The main thing is which tire are you going to use? Tires with a very square shoulder will have rubbing issues if you go with a 245/40R17. Tires that are more rounded will fit. Dave Ngo runs BFG KD 245/40s all around and he had rubbing issues (ever so slightly). Maybe if he ran 235/40s all around, he would have clearance. HTH, Chester
