#2. [E36M3] New Chip: Less Ping, More Torque - from RogRacer@aol.com
Top
Date: Fri, 17 Nov 2000 21:20:16 EST From: RogRacer@aol.com Subject: [E36M3] New Chip: Less Ping, More Torque For those following my Ping saga (beats this election stuff, right?), here is the latest....I installed the JC Euro Intake (with JC Chip E506-301) and was complaining that my engine was pinging pretty badly. I talked to Josh about it and he told me that story about some early build M3s having some pinging problems due to possible higher than "normal" compression, and he whipped out JC Chip E506-302 for me to try......so, being the methodical person that I am, I went down to the local dynojet facility to check which chip was better. First runs were with the original 301 "normal" Euro HFM chip. The runs were very consistent, but there was a fair amount of pinging going on, especially from about 3-4 k rpm. Motor didn't sound the greatest. Next I swaped to Chip 302 and repeated the runs...again very consistent results...and guess what...NO ping...engine sounded great. And the best part...the motor picked up 4-8 ft-lbs of torque from 3-5.5 k rpm. Wonderful. No down side....no ping and more power! JC delivered on this one! Now, with regard to absolute numbers, I must say I was a little disappointed, but I need to add some quailfiers with that. With the good chip, I got 208 hp at the wheels (4th gear), and 202 ft-lb of torque. The shape of the torque curve exactly matches the curves in the "published" dyno curves, so I think my motor was performing well. BUT...this was a weird Dynojet...the first ever "in ground" model installed in Florida...a model 248E, and I don't think the results compare directly with the more common above ground 248C. The dyno guys were impressed with the motor, and told me that LT1 Camaros only put down 216 hp on this dyno. So I'm only 8 hp down on an LT1 chevy....pretty damn good I'd say. So I'm a pretty happy camper...No Ping...More Torque! Roger W. Graves RogRacer@aol.com '95 M3, JC Euro Intake...finally getting sorted... Next up: remove water baffle and blueprint throttle plate centration....

This would have to depend on the DME programming. The fuel consumption signal is sent to the dash & OBC from the DME. From what I have seen, the FC signal doesn't look accurate if you make many mods. However, there is a "correction factor" that can be adjusted in your OBC to make it right again. Enter the programming mode for the OBC and voila, dial a correction factor for mpg. I had the same label on the tranny of my 99 E39 528, but put redline MTL in there anyway to try and solve the God-awful "hard to shift when cold" syndrome that also affects (from what I hear) every 2.8 and 3.2 with 5 speed. It didn't help. I swear, when I sell this car, that's going to be one reason I think hard about an Audi next time instead of a BMW. Michael

You would've felt the difference (smoother shifts). I believe you'll be fine with MTL through winter but I usually save the MTL for track season. YMMV! #6. Not sure what the problem is - from HYPERM3@aol.com
Top
Date: Sat, 18 Nov 2000 10:54:00 EST From: HYPERM3@aol.com Subject: Not sure what the problem is Hy all, Recently I've been having a reoccurring problem. When I'm driving at a steady pace, it will feel like the car has no fuel running to the engine. It will almost buck and stop running. I can see that it must be the fuel because when this happens, my air/fuel meter runs full lean. But its odd that it will happen even when cruising at a normal pace whether 50 mph or even 20 mph. Also, when this happens, and the meter reads full lean, nothing happens if I step on the accelerator pedal. Ill hear exhaust but the car wont go anywhere or feel like it wants to pick up. Anyone have a clue? Alex "HyperM3" Demsky 97 SCM3

Date: Sat, 18 Nov 2000 10:44:02 -0600 From: "Ariel Jimenez" <ariel@megapathdsl.net> Subject: winter tires too soon? Hello list- Just wondering of when, in your opinion, is the best time to put on winter tires? I'm in Chicago, and we're starting to see some light snow flurries. I'm more concerned that the temp is staying steady in the 30's and is dropping below freezing in early morning and evening (when I'm coming to and from work). Do you think putting them on now would be too soon? TIA, this is my first ever set of winter tires. -Ariel Jimenez 99 Silver M3

Are you talking about the small brackets that attach to the links, or the bushing brackets? Those link brackets are 'tiny'! Most of what I see, front and rear, looks over engineered (typical Germany), but those brackets look like something from Home Depot. Considering I went through my RSMs in less than 20K miles, I think the stress level back there during autoxing will be extreme. What should be done before I install the Eibachs. Jonathan, I'm sure there are a number possible causes for the noise you described. You might try checking the heater valve..Next time you hear the noise, pop the hood and find the heater valve mounted in the rear of the engine compartment, on the driver's side firewall....You should see three hoses going up and then leading into the heater core, located inside the passenger compartment. Put your hand on the hoses (watch out..could be very hot) and you may feel a surge of water in sync with your "noise". Some of the heater valves, including mine, make this noise. From what I've been told, you could replace it, but the new one may just do it again.
