Date: Mon, 27 Nov 2000 19:48:47 -0500 From: Ron Katona <rkatona@bellatlantic.net> Subject: Re: M3 strunt towers It's a flat steel ring about 5-6" in diameter and maybe 3/32" in thickness with a hole in the middle that fits the hole in the top of the strut tower. It's lipped on both edges for extra strength (down on the outside, up in the center to fit into the top of the strut tower). It's drilled with three holes for the strut bearing bolts. This is a bolt on BMW part that installs between the strut bearing and the strut tower. You have to remove the strut to install it. It reinforces the top of the tower from below. It's a stock part on 3.2L M3s, but will fit any E36. It will not interfere with most aftermarket camber plates (YMMV). I highly recommend it for cars with lower/stiffer springs or even stock '95s that are tracked/autocrossed regularly. Because of the extra thickness, you may need longer bolts for your aftermarket strut tower brace. -- Ron Katona Rob wrote: > > Hi Ron, > can you describe exactly what this part is and whats involved to install it > (i.e weld or bolt in). > > >>The P/N for the ring is: Front Spring Strut Tower Reinforcement 31 31 > 248 9795 > You'll also need the gasket: 31 33 109 4288<< > > Thanks, > Rob

I pulled it out, no problem, and was able to locate the lamp at Pep Boys. Fixed one of the ashtray lights at the same time, and picked up a couple of spares for the future. Re my battery question, a couple of good responses (thanks Dave Spragg and Lew Becker). Anybody else with a leaking battery/corrosion under the battery, and what did you do to fix it? #5. Sumitomo question - from Tom Anderson

Date: Mon, 27 Nov 2000 21:00:34 -0500 From: Tom Anderson <anderson@netside.com> Subject: Sumitomo question Hi Gang, a friend of mine and I both have Sumitomo HTRZII 235/40-17's mounted on stock rims on our 95 M3's. Both sets have +/- 20K miles. Both sets have interesting grooves around the inside edge of several of the tires, as if they'd been placed on a lathe and grooved with a file. These grooves have the approximate radius of a dime. They did not appear until about 19K miles. Both of his rears are grooved and the right front has a groove also. My left rear has a groove around the entire circumference. The right rear has a deeper groove but around only 1/3 of the circumference. Two different alignment shops are clueless as to the cause. He has a stock suspension, I have Bilsteins/H&R installed when the tires had 18K on them. The tires have been kept balanced. We are puzzled and looking for answers/suggestions. I'm assuming that it's the same part for right or left since you only listed one part number. I'm going to have to pull my struts in the spring to put on my H&R's so it would be the ideal time to do the reinforcement plates. Also, do you, or anyone else for that matter, know of any good source for longer bolts of suitable grade? I'm assuming I will need longer bolts because right now I have KMAC camber plates and a Racing Dynamics strut bar and there are no extra threads protruding beyond the existing locknuts. #9. Help: Replacing Brake Light Switch - from Brian Liau
Top
Date: Mon, 27 Nov 2000 21:02:22 -0600 From: "Brian Liau" <bliau@hotmail.com> Subject: Help: Replacing Brake Light Switch I am attempting to replace the brake light switch that is above the brake pedal. I removed the connector, but I can not seem to pull the switch out from the metal bracket. I have tried pressing the brake pedal while pulling on the switch but it doesn't budge. Looking at the part, it is only held in place by two tabs on each side. So I'm thinking that jiggling it around would free it from the bracket, but nothing budges. Any ideas? Brian Liau 1997 M3
