Date: Tue, 28 Nov 2000 16:53:22 -0500 (EST) From: dahermann@alum.mit.edu Subject: Re: Going to Munich I spent several days in Germany this past summer and toured the major car museums (MB, BMW, Porsche) and stopped by Nurburgring. It was a lot of fun and certainly something you want to do if you have a chance. One thing I would check now is if there are any openings for the BMW factory tour. Those tend to book 6-8 weeks in advance, but if you're lucky, you might find a slot open. I showed up thinking I could get in and was disappointed. The BMW Musuem, though, is always open to the public as far as I know. With regard to Nurburgring, it is a bit of a drive from Munich. I drove from Munich to Stuttgart (west about 2-2.5 hours) and then to Cologne (north about 1.5-2 hours). Nurburgring was about 45 minutes south of Cologne. There may be a more direct route from Munich, but I would expect it to be a 2.5-3 hour drive. Maybe someone who's spent more time in Germany can weigh in on this one, but that's how long it took me at about 110-125mph on the autobahn. BTW, the castles along the river on the autobahn near Cologne are supposed to be quite amazing. Unfortunately for me, I made that drive at night. As for other things to see, I found the MB Museum in Stuttgart to be the best (biggest and most extensive collection of cars). Porsche was cool in that it had a lot of racing cars on display, but it was quite small. The Porsche showroom across the street has some nice examples of 911 Turbos and the like. I ended up buying most of my souveneirs at the Porsche museum. The BMW museum was less impressive and I'm really disappointed that I did not get to see the factory. It was cool to see a Z8 up close parked outside on the street, though (this was before they made it to the US). Lots more stuff to do there, but I assume you're mostly referring to car-related stuff. The beer, of course, is great. Best in Munich as the glasses get smaller the farther north you go. It's definitely on my list of places to visit again. dan 96 M3

I'd squirt over to Stuttgart (~120mi on the A8-W, IIRC) for at least a day to see the MB museum (has the REAL original car Gottleib Daimler built!) and in Zuffenhausen (pretty near there ~5mi) is the Porsche museum. It was closed last time I was there, so I didn't get to go, but it is on my list of what to do next time. OBMWC: The BMW HQ building's a cylindrical to represent engine cylinders. #6. mild vibration at 65-75mph--alignment needed? - from mauricio.wiesner@us.pwcglobal.com

Date: Tue, 28 Nov 2000 17:11:26 -0500 From: <mauricio.wiesner@us.pwcglobal.com> Subject: mild vibration at 65-75mph--alignment needed? Jason: I had the same problem, turned out to be defective tires. The way to notice it is when the you spin the wheel on the tire balancing machine. As the wheel spins check if the tire's contact patch is moving, in other words check to see if the exterior circumference of the tire is constant as it rotates. If it's not and they are correclty mounted on good wheels, like in my case, the tires are defective. Mine were MXX3's. They balanced perfectly but this lack of 'true-ing' made them feel as if they are were not balanced at precisely 65-75 mph. I believe that the last of the MXX3's sold in the US may have included defective tires that were sold to deplete inventories (the MXX3 is no longer made) - there are plenty of dishonest tire dealers out there. If you're on the same boat and got your tires from a large retailer like Tire Rack, give them hell and they should replace them. The best replacement for the MXX3s IMHO is the S-02 PP. The car's got a mild vibration that I feel primarily in the steering column that starts around 65mph and is noticeable through 75mph. It doesn't pull to either side. I've got MMX3's on that were recently balanced. The dealer said the vibration could be due to dent in the wheel, but there's nothing that noticeable to me. It was last given a 4 wheel alignment 2 years ago. Is it time for another one? #10. tire wear and camber - from dahermann@alum.mit.edu

Date: Tue, 28 Nov 2000 17:28:42 -0500 (EST) From: dahermann@alum.mit.edu Subject: tire wear and camber given that we're discussing camber and tire wear and the like, perhaps someone can help me. i just pulled off my street tires for a DE event and found the while my front street tires are wearing evenly, the rears are down to the wear bar on the inside egde of the tire while the outside edge has almost as much tread left as the front tires. is this normal or do i need to adjust camber/toe/etc? btw, the tires are 225/40/18 dunlop SP Sport 8000s on a 96 M3 with H&R race springs and Bilstein sport shocks. since i don't know a whole lot about the effects of different suspension adjustments, is there a good place to read up on the effects (cornering, tire wear, etc) of different suspension adjustments (camber, toe, etc)? i think it would at least help me ask more educated questions. thanks, dan 96 M3
