#5. LTW forged staggered rim offset; Michelin MXX3 - from Marc.S.Edwards@questdiagnostics.com

Mark: the LTW rims have the same offset 42 mm front and rear. No difference. "Anyway, the PO bought brand new Pilots right before I bought the car and had them put 235 (the factory 95 size) on all the way around." Mark: All of the 1995 M3s with stock 17 x 7.5 rims came with 235/40/17 Michelin Pilot MXX3s on them from the factory. So did the LTW with the staggered wheel sizes of front 17x7.5 and rear 17x8.5. With that tire you should have no problems. With the staggered rims you just can't rotate front to back. Marc 95 M3 LTW

I totally agree with Sean's post. I've long argued BMW spec'd too narrow of a rim on our M3's. Our M3's should have come with wider tires and rims if for no other reason than it looks much better. The narrow rim does make the 235 wear out in the center of the tread if you do lots of Interstate driving. There can't really be a safety concern. Every tire manufacturer does recommend mounting 245/40 tires on 8.0 inch rims. That is the same difference as mounting a 235/40 tire on a 7.5 inch rim. A 245 tire is roughly 0.5 inch wider. I think the Toyo rep is being a little bit extreme. Lowell Seaton '95 M3 - Toyo F1S 235/45 R-compound tires on 8.5" forged rims all around BMW CCA #131505

The oil, as I understand, is there to trap the dirt and debris to prevent them from entering the engine. My lawn mower's air filter uses motor oil, and the material used there is similar to the ITC's. The ITC recommended oil seems to be quite a bit stickier and thicker than the regular motor oil though. Nothing to watch out for as long as you don't start with the front full soft and the rear full stiff (makes the car oversteer). Go from where you have them and if you feel you need less understeer, stiffen up the rear a notch and drive that for a while. If you need still less understeer, stiffen the rear another notch, then repeat and maybe loosen the front a notch. Just take it in steps until the car feels right. -- Ron Katona

The '95 came with 7.5" all around. 235's (or even 245's) will mount on the 7.5" rim but, in most cases, it's a bit pinched. The theory is that marketing type made the decision to go with 235's. -Matt --- Wen Liew <wwliew@hotmail.com> wrote: > Date: Fri, 01 Dec 2000 01:29:49 > From: "Wen Liew" <wwliew@hotmail.com> > Subject: Re: [E36M3] Toyo RA-1 Info > > >know what? michellin says the same thing about the > MXX3 in 235/40/17 size. > >yet they came that way on my 95 M3. go figure. > and...dunlop says that > >about the tires they put on M3s at tehf actory > (with 7.5 inch rims) in > >fact, as far as i know, every tire manufacturer > says you need 8 inch rims > >for 235/40/17 tires. > > > >but... since i've never used a wheel other then > the stock 10 spoke 17/7.5 > >on my M3, and i've gone through 50 sets of > 235/40/17 tires from 6 companies > >(9 tire models) i'm not sure why it's officially a > "bad fit". > > If memory serves me right, I thought the US 95 3.0 > came with 17x8 235/40/17 > all around, 96 and later 3.2 came with 17x7.5 front > 225/45 and 17x8.5 rear > 245/40 and 95 LTW came with 17x7.5 front and 17x8.5 > rear but with 235/40 all > around.
