Date: Fri, 1 Dec 2000 21:11:02 -0500 From: "Stan Shaw III" <Stan.Shaw@Excell.Net> Subject: Looking for Wheels Looks like I may need to do some winter driving in the M3, so.... I am looking for a set of LTW wheels, 2 7.5x17s and 2 8.5x17s are ok. I already have such a set, and intend to use a full set of 8.5s for track wheels, and the 7.5s for winter wheels and summer rain track wheels. I am also looking for a set of winter tires, to fit on the above hoped for option of 4 7.5x17 LTW wheels, or as a second option on my normal street M Contour 7.5x17 and 8.5x17 wheels. I am in digest mode, so please copy my email directly with offers/suggestions. Thanks! My cat-back unit >weighs >about 26 pounds and the OEM unit weighs a little over 50 so I met my goal >big >time." race car drivers spend every last amount of money they have to save every pound and get every bit of power form their cars. so it's not unusual to find someone spending $1000 for a 2hp gain. or $1000 for a 10 pound loss. every bit counts for racing. that's not the case for street cars. even cars driven by those who think they are race car drivers, or in my case ARE race car drivers. (but i don't race in the street) from bob's answer, the best possible exaust he could find for his race car produced a ZERO hp gain, and lost him 24 lbs. dang... that's not much of a boost. again... for racing everything counts, so spending $300 for 24 pounds is a good thing. but! that falls under the category of DAMN NEAR WORTHLESS for a street car. in fact it pretty much means that i will never think about an aftermarket exaust for an M3. (for performance reasons at least) sure, get a muffler for a better sound, or for a better look. but if your goal is "all i want is power" (as the original poster said) then i think the answer is pretty much "skip it" _____________________________________________________________________________________ Get more from the Web. I get pretty much zero tire hop (I assume this is the same thing as an axle tramp) on launches of any RPM. This is with both my Toyo Proxies (which I don't need to launch to smoke in 1st gear ;-) ) and my Kumhos. This setup is fairly stiff - it only drops maybe 1/4" when I press on a fender with my full weight. I had a set on my 1987 5.0 and let me tell you thiese things are LOUD. Yes they make more power then stock and they weigh less too. But the sound is so SWEET for the first two weeks, after that it get very annoying. I have a 1995 ///M3 with a Borla and like it VERY MUCH. My brother has a 1988 Fiero (project car) with a Flowmaster. That car is LOUD, more so then my Borla. He has since ordered a Borla to keep the dB's down a bit. Bill P PS I recall an article in a mag ((Hot Rod (?) ) that did a test on various mufflers. Flowmaster, Dynomax, Super Trapp, Borla, etc. The one muffler that always made the most HP and Torque was the Dynomax (made by Walker). Flowmaster was 2nd. So for all out power DynoMax is the hot ticket and not as loud either. Friend has it on his IROC. PPS My friend replaced his Turbo Style mufflers on his 1969 Camaro (500+ HP) with a 4" Flowmaster setup and got over 50 HP and 3/10 in the quarter. But boy is it loud. -------------------- 10 -------------------- Date: Fri, 1 Dec 2000 18:00:10 -0800 From: "Lew Becker" <lmbeckercfls@earthlink.net> Subject: Honest power gains with perf. muffler? Sean, I think that Bob's goal was a muffler that had no torque penalty. AutoX is a game of grip and launching from corners at low RPMs. He didn't say that there weren't any mufflers that didn't give extra power (top end) with a corresponding loss of torque. Of course most street cars benefit more from torque than power. But, for a track car, the freer flowing muffler might be helpful. There's an interesting write up on mufflers at autospeed.com. They evaluated several types on the flow bench. I believe that they included the same type of muffler that Bob chose and found it to be somewhat more restrictive and even louder than the well-designed "straight-through" type like the Walker Dynmax or UUC. Finally, didn't we decide that one of the reasons that the Mcoup is faster than the M3 is the exhaust? -Matt > > race car drivers spend every last amount of money > they have to save every > pound and get every bit of power form their cars. > so it's not unusual to > find someone spending $1000 for a 2hp gain. or > $1000 for a 10 pound loss. > every bit counts for racing. that's not the case > for street cars. even > cars driven by those who think they are race car > drivers, or in my case ARE > race car drivers.
