You don't say what year your car is, how many miles it has, whether it gets track use, or if you've modified the suspension. Would have been helpful... The highest probability is still the swaybar links. If you're sure they are securely bolted - not always easy to tell - then the links' ball joints may simply be worn out. Mine were. You definitely can't tell if they have internal play without removing them, and even a small amount of looseness makes surprisingly loud knocking sounds. Neil 96 M3

Actually, it's pretty easy, if you know a trick or two (my thanks to Lew Becker, I believe, for the tip). The trick was to use increasingly bigger box wrenches to open the front bushing to slip them over the sway bars - this worked great, and as Lew indicated, reduced the risk of jabbing oneself with a screwdriver. (I wrote this in my "Impressions" post several months ago.) I've got both bars wrapped in teflon tape, and used a Mobil 1 grease for packing the bushings. Been on the car for 6 months (approx. 20,000 miles) - no squeaks <knock on wood>. Cheers, Jim Bassett 1998 M3/4 - wheel bearings & cat. making noise, but not the swaybars :-)

With the facilities available at a dealer, it should not take more than 20 minutes. > How difficult is it to install this > thing? It is not difficult at all. Very easy. You just have to get your M3 up high enough to crawl underneath. I drive mine up onto car ramps. There are only 4 screws that hold the panel on. You will need a very long extension to reach them. You will also need to remove the pork chop corner pieces but they come off easy too - 4 or 5 bolts plus a couple of plastic rivets. Check Ron Stygar's web site for instructions. Someone just posted their procedures for reinforcing the panel. You do not need to remove the bumper. Sorry to hear you hit a dear. I guess we will have to call you Bambislayer II. Don't feel bad about driving straight and hitting the deer. I've heard of cases of people swerving to miss dogs or wild animals and either wrecking their cars or one case where the person died. It is not worth dying over. I'm happy you were not injured. Curious that the deer went under your M3. Deer always go over the hood and into your windshield. I would think especially with an M3 since it is so low already. A deer is fairly tall and its center of gravity is high. I would think especially with an M3 since it is so low already. I used to live in Iowa. Lots of deer and loose cattle on the roads. But guess what the worst animal to hit is? A hog. Hogs are low and always go under your car. You can do a lot more damage when something is rolling under your car than when it hits your windshield and goes over. But what make hogs even worse is you are likely to lose control of your car and roll it. Why? Because hogs are nothing more than greasy bacon. You high center your car on a slice of bacon, no telling which way your are going to slide. Lots of cars have been totaled in Iowa after hitting hogs on the highway. Now if only they had a LTW dual sump oil pan that they wanted to give away..... Anybody have any expericence with the dual sump oil pan?? The swaybar end links can be loose enough to clunk loudly but if you get under the front loaded or unloaded and pull you won't feel it. I was really surprised how little torque was on my front Eibachs yet I couldn't budge the thing... I am not particularly strong but I can bench 205 8 times cleanly. :) If it's not that then the ball joints are the next most likely. Don't you all wish we had easy methods of getting real clean audio recordings. That would be nice for a diagnosis, I know I would recognize a few different M3 sounds. THe main reason to get 10mm spacers, though, is that 5mm spacers from H&R may not leave you with enough hub to properly center the wheel. This will result in wheel shimmy at ~60MPH (at least for me.) The 10mm spacers are hubcentric, which will prevent this problem. I got my spacers from Steve D'G at the Ultimate Garage, http://www.ultimategarage.com.
