Hopefully my gift will save my other family jewels and the 6 point harnesses won't hurt too much :) Car goes back into the shop on the 8th. Jim <== I can weld, maybe I should do the rest of the cage myself. Welding is way-easier than trying to get that starter bolt out and back in to remove a tranny ;) Donna Seeley wrote: > You're asking me? Did anyone notices the new E46 M3 rim in the brochure look different then the one picture in the new European Car & C&D? The one in the brochure is a deep dish and the other is flat? What up with that are their two different type of rim style for the new M3.Mark

Date: Fri, 08 Dec 2000 22:01:06 -0800 From: Roger Baker <rbaker@velodyne.com> Subject: RE: Transmission removal question Actually, an E36 M3 5spd manual tranny does weigh 100lbs, almost exactly. I believe it's actually a couple lbs under if you don't count clutch, pr plate & flywheel (which you're not lifting off anyway). Not to say anything about the various skill levels of the assorted list members, but it only takes me a few hours to get my tranny out. This is at home, on jackstands, by myself. Most tranny jacks don't help either, unless you have a custom cradle to grip the manual trans body. Most tranny jacks grip auto's in stock trim. If you're not a serious wrench though, it's not a good idea, plain & simple. The tricky parts are: getting the bellhousing bolts out (tilt the engine back & support it, bolts are torx, 3 sizes, use a SUPER long extension); and them lining up the input shaft w/clutch when you put it back in. I have an AA turbo & some track sessions to thank for the couple of times my tranny has been out. Roger Baker LoweSeaton@aol.com wrote: > <snip> > Who says the transmission only weighs 100 lbs?? Huh? I won't argue. It's hard to believe. I guess I have been working on cars too long. My experience with transmissions is 70's vintage GM Turbo-Matic 400 and Ford C6 tranny's. You don't want to lay under them. Lowell Seaton '95 M3

It hasn't been that many months >since you were asking for help to change your oil. Why don't you NOT >try and become an auto mechanic? Aw c'mmon! Where's your sense of adventure Jim? I know I don't make any money by wrenching on my car but I'd rather do that sometimes than sit my butt in front of a computer and make money. Jack and I have done this a couple of times (given this is on an E30 M3) but I somehow doubt that the E36 M3 tranny is 300 lbs. Now the difference between a 2002 4spd and a Getrag 265 is significant but you're not going to die if you have to bench press a 5spd. There are no special tools involved either, we bought crow's foot wrenches at Sears and were ready to go. Besides, if he starts club racing and needs to replace a clutch at the track, you think a pro-mechanic will be sitting there waiting to get to work? Dave I'd offer to drive to Chicago and give you a helping hand but the weather really sux around here lately. Good luck bro and make sure you have the proper clutch alignment tool. -Carlos __________________________________________________ Do You Yahoo!? Yahoo! Shopping - Thousands of Stores.
