#1. Any suggestions on a noisy suspension??? - from FAS302@aol.com

Date: Sun, 10 Dec 2000 20:01:07 EST From: FAS302@aol.com Subject: Any suggestions on a noisy suspension??? I've been hearing some banging noises coming from behind the car as of late. I have a 95 M3 with 54k on the clock, so I assumed new rsm's were in order. I put a set of JTD's in thinking this would solve my problems. After taking the car for a drive, I noticed the JTD's helped, but, there is still some banging going on. The suspension is stock with the exception of Eibach sway's. The sway's are what I'm going to be checking next. While I'm under there, is there anything else I should be looking for? Any bushings that go at about the 50k mark that should be looked at? The sways have been on the car for about a year now, with no ill effects. The car has some autoxing on it, but, not enough to warrant any significant wear and tear on the suspension. Any advice is appreciated. TIA, Evan

#2. Engine Whine - from ENF

Date: Sun, 10 Dec 2000 20:46:08 -0500 From: "ENF" <enf@iglou.com> Subject: Engine Whine Recently I started noticing a whining sound from the engine. It is the kind of sound one would hear if a belt were slipping or a bearing of some sort going bad. I took it to the dealer and they replaced the idler pully and tensioner . But I still hear the sound after the car has been driven awhile. If I give it some revs (in park or drive) I hear it right as the engine comes back to idle. The service guy said "it's normal" and that it is the timing chain running on a nylon track(???). I still don't think it's right. He said there's a lot going on with this type of engine. Maybe so but I don't think an annoying sound would be one of them. I would think if I reved up and let off I would hear the engine do it's thing but should not hear any additional sounds lagging behind. Any ideas on this would be appreciated, I've only a couple of months before my warranty is done. BTW because of questions asked and answered on this list I have been able to get many things taken care of, one was that pesky check engine light (turned out to be tank leaks). With the information I received I was able to tell them that it was not the "gas cap" and that they needed to check further. I have a feeling that this is happening now with this noise problem. Thanks, Ed Frank 97 M3/4

To reduce the understeer most, wouldn't soft front and stiff back be best? I would like to hear from those who have experience with adjustable sway bars before mine get installed. Evan, My 95 M3 needed replacement front bushings in the rear lower swing arms at 55K miles. Poke a big screwdriver into the linkage well and see how much play is there when you push against the side of the trailing arm. Buy yourself a few cases of lager (any brand will do) get under there and have fun. I never have done it on my ///M3 (soon) but have done it several times on my mustang. Took less then one a case a beer for the stang, but then again I did not have to take off the exhaust. Bill P There is NO WAY the tranny on the ///M3 is 300 lbs.

#7. Plastic water pump data point - from Eric.C.Dotson@travelers.com

Date: Mon, 11 Dec 2000 09:12:49 -0500 From: Eric.C.Dotson@travelers.com Subject: Plastic water pump data point Due to a broken thermostat, I did some work on the M3 over the weekend. I figured if I have to replace the thermostat, I might as well replace the water pump, and if I'm doing that I might as well replace the hoses... you know how it goes. All parts were purchased from Steve D. at Ultimate Garage and came with Steve's usual great prices and excellent service. The car is a 95 M3 with 96k. From what I could tell the water pump was the original unit, and frankly, it was perfect. No missing pieces, no cracks, nuthin. This is after lots of hot Florida summers, lots of autocrosses, and two weekends at Sebring. The thermostat just broke. One of the little crimped/welded joints holding the spring assembly in place just broke, so the whole thing kinda popped permenantly open. The plastic housing was also perfect, no leaks, no corrosion, I replaced it with an aluminum one, but could have easily reused the old one. I replaced the radiator hoses, but got lazy when it came to the heater hoses. The only easy way I saw to do them was to remove the intake, and I didn't feel like doing that. Anyone have any tips to easily replace the heater hoses with a minimum of effort? Eric 95 M3 00 Passat Wagon

Hello all, Autocrosses, driving schools and karting brings it all down to one hell of a snow day here in Chicago. I don't have traction control and I'm lovin' every minute of it:-) Heck I haven't even tripped the ABS. When I had the Porsche, I was really nervous in that car. The ///M is one heck of a car in the snow. It's driving on a day like today that really makes you real smooth and being at 100% concentration. Happy motoring to all in Chicago. So, yes, this is best for reducing understeer but not best for handling. The rule of thumb is to start out full stiff/soft f/r and adjust from there. This is the safest and in many cases, most optimal adjustment. 99% of all drivers turn fastest times with a car that understeers a bit. Maybe not as much 'fun' but it is the best way. -Matt --- Mdriver13@aol.com wrote: > Date: Sun, 10 Dec 2000 21:33:52 EST > From: Mdriver13@aol.com > Subject: Re: [E36M3] Eibachs > > Jim and others, > > I use the 245 setup with 17x8 SSRs all the way > around for autoxing. Put the Pirelli snows on the car this weekend--wow, the 215 snows sure work a heck of a lot better than 255 S02-PPs! I've had the tires for a while (Carl gave them to me with Ice9), but since I don't drive Ice9 in the winter (how ironic ;-), the first chance I had to drive an M3 in the snow was the wife's M3/4. Not nearly as bad as (uninformed) people make it out to be, especially with the right shoes. The ASC actually works pretty well, but it's a hell of a lot more fun with it off.
