What ABS does at the minimum is tracking that a). all four wheels are turning; b) all four are turning at the same speed. There is no way functional ABS would miss one or more wheels "sliding across the pavement" == locking. Are you sure your ABS is working? FWIW, I don't have any problems with RE730s in ABS or non-ABS braking. Well, except that they are not sticky enough in the dry and go into ABS mode way too soon compared to R tires, but that's to be expected. > I would not autocross in these tires. Agreed. There are plenty of stickier dry tires out there. Among street tires BFG KDs would be at the top of my list. > You are getting what you pay for. They create all sorts of whispering/humming noises as you reach and exceed the limit of adhesion, but squealing is not one of them. Are we talking about the same tires? alex f > Ed Tang > 95 Cosmos M3

Quick refresher: I broke a differential bolt (according to my dealer) and wanted to know what else might be broke or worn. Thanks for the great replies. Especially Ron Kotana who politely let me know that testing my ASC might not be so bright. I broke the bolt that stops my differential from pitching up and down. No damage to the differential housing or ears. On a side note, I had it done under warranty and was given a Caddy as a rental. A big boat disguised as a car. It had great power. Just needed some anti roll bars, shocks, and a new suspension. Thanks all 98 M3 soon to so show up at a track near you.

Yes, the ABS is working. In fact, very sensitive to wet/snow conditions and over bumps. Under extremely hard braking at the threshold the tires would slide over the pavement giving the same sensation as locked brakes. It is very momentary. Otherwise I believe the ABS would indeed kick in. The tires probably slide a foot or two. Unless I'm too sensitive (I've been known to cry to Beatles songs), the feedback I get from the car is a very momentary locked up situation. I am currently driving my brother's 325i w/o ABS in the snow so I know the feeling but it's not momentary. Quite fun actually. > Hmmm, mine wont squeal no matter what you do with > them. Many can attest to the hog that was squealing at the last autocross. Reminds me of Ned Beatty in "Deliverance". I had a hard time getting the front tires to bite. Some pressure adjustment helped but the squeal was still there. Ed Tang 95 Cosmos M3 __________________________________________________ Do You Yahoo!? Yahoo! Shopping - Thousands of Stores. I'll agree they are far off their potential when only "street warm" but they still have more stick than any street tire. I have NEVER been beaten by a car on street tires at an autocross and we have a fairly competitive set of drivers. Pilot Sports, AVS Sports, Pole Positions, etc... are great tires but they do not have the same grip as an gForce R1A or ever a Toyo RA1 at 50 degrees. That said you can feel the traction improve through a 1 minute autocross run and if you take another run immediately (cheating :) ) you will have more grip. My 235/40r17 >AVS intermediates (at $102 a piece) are ok, though. g-force R1A's are, of course, race compound tires. meaning, of course, that they are pretty much WORTHLESS until they are heated up. and i don't mean heated up by driving around the block. i mean heated up by taking 1-2 laps around a race track at at least 3/4 speed. (and since they are g-force tires, of course, you have to have the air pressures set correctly to within 1/2 pound, and camber settings set correctly to within 0.01 degree, for them to work at well. but that's another rant...) anyway... i'll bet if you took a couple laps around a track, pulled into the hot pits, and tried the "break loose" test, you couldn't break those tires loose before you fried your clutch from dumping it at 6000 rpm trying to prove me wrong. avs intermediates, being street tires, have almost full traction when cold. therefore they'll do MUCH MUCH better on the "break loose" test when they are cold. _________________________________________________________________ Get your FREE download of MSN Explorer at http://explorer.msn.com ************************************************************* List Commands UNSUBSCRIBE - (in subject line) unsubscribes you from the mailing list. *************************************************************

Date: Tue, 19 Dec 2000 10:50:37 -0800 From: "Jay Miller" <jjmiller6@hotmail.com> Subject: Another bloody noise Since were on the little noise topic... My 95 has a whine when I start the car when the engines cold. I usually turn the engine off and on again and the whine vanishes. Today I drove to work (10min) and the whine continued the whole way. I parked, turn the engine off, and restarted and again the whine went away. Sounds like something needs a little grease. Any ideas?
