It did so at about 35.2k mi and 35 months into the free maintenance period. The stealer said even with all the green lights off that BMW NA wouldn't cover the Inspection II maintenance. I made the stealer call BMW and they got the authorization. #2. Chicago-land body repair? - from Joseph Kannookadan

Date: Sun, 07 Jan 2001 16:03:45 -0600 From: "Joseph Kannookadan" <joekannooks@hotmail.com> Subject: Chicago-land body repair? Hi all, regretfully, I have to ask for opinion(s) of body repair shops for my 97 m3. I parked at my work parking lot on Friday, and when I came back later that night, my left head light, grill assembly, and hood were nicely shoved in (always a nice surprise eh?). At least she left a note. So now I'm going to have to find some place to put my car's face back together. Does anyone recommend a place, or tell me what to look for in a shop? I don't mind going anywhere in the Chicago/suburb area. I'm also afraid that since the damage isn't *too* extensive that her insurance company is going to end up trying to force me to have the hood bondo'd and repainted. I *really* want to avoid having to deal with repainted parts. Does anyone have any tips on (potentially) arguing with the insurance company (State Farm) to have them replace the damaged parts? I would really appreciate your help here. This is the first car that I bought, and I know it's just a possession, but DAMN, I really love this car. I'm sure you all know what I mean. ---- In regard to my previous post about extended warranties... I ended up buying a 6 year/100k mi/$0 deductible warranty from Warranty Direct. They seemed to be the most trustworthy/priceworthy. Thanks for the help! ---- I (nor the dealer) still cannot figure out what the sizzling noise is that happens occasionally on cold starts. Does this not happen to ANYone else??? I could swear that someone mentioned this. Am I imagining things? Thanks everyone, and happy New Years! --- joe one-eye-m3 _________________________________________________________________ Get your FREE download of MSN Explorer at http://explorer.msn.com

#4. How important are rear brakes? - from Rob

Date: Sun, 7 Jan 2001 15:49:24 -0700 From: "Rob" <motor@cadvision.com> Subject: How important are rear brakes? Yes I know it seems like a silly question, but really, how important are rear brakes? I've always been taught the rear only do ~30% of the work at any given time and nobody seems to pay much attention to them when it comes to upgrade time. I'm probably going with an AP Racing 13" front set-up and I'm wondering if there is much of an advantage to upgrading the rears at the same time. I'm looking to make the car fast, stable and safe on the track and don't want to upset the braking balance. In the old days I had an adjustable proportioning valve on my non-ABS cars but with ABS I don't see the need since you can't lock-up either end of the car. What are your thoughts???? Thanks, Rob

I don't know when they switched but it does make sense that if you using the car harder your going to be using more fuel. Maybe someone else in the know can confirm this?? Jeremy Lucas Delaware, OH ----- Original Message ----- From: "Andy T. Korczynski" <andy@casskor.com> I don't know about Inspection II, but I just hit Inspection I and it didnt come on till AFTER the car had over 18,000. The light came on the next time I started the car after it went over 18,000. I do think it works on the "how you drive" principle I've heard before. I push the car almost every time I drive it (I didnt buy it to putz around town) and the light didn't come on any sooner.

Date: Sun, 7 Jan 2001 16:30:16 -0700 From: "Rob" <motor@cadvision.com> Subject: re: Stiff suspension + ABS. Almost wrecked my car! (long) Hi Ron, My car has to be on the upper ranges of "stiff" for a street driven M3 and I don't have the problem you seem to have - at least not to the extent that you do. ****What suspension combo are you running? Are the H&R shocks and struts in your coil-over kit adjustable? ***No. The shocks aren't letting the springs work to keep the tires planted on the ground. **This sounds possible but it is a factory set-up H&R kit that I haven't monkey'd with. They are 340#-F and 380#-R and the shock valving feels 'very' heavy! .Also, if you have heavy wheels and tires the effect will be worse. Stock wheels? ***17" BBS RK's @ ~17lbs. > This story is about suspesnion and brakes so please no lessons on how and > where to drive. Sorry, I tried _real_ hard. ;-) It has to be asked whether you let off the brakes a bit in anticipation of bumps in order to help determine whether there really is something wrong with the car. Better to give up a few feet of braking and then get back on them hard than to upset the suspension, get the ABS going, then try to get everything to settle back down (as you found out). ****I 100% agree with what you have to say here, and knowing that there was a frost-heave (bump) in the road at that point I would have started braking sooner or later to avoid this near disaster situation.....BUT......I didn't know it was there and that is the problem. On the track you can learn every inch of the pavement but on the street you can't.....maybe a softer set-up is better (safer and more forgiving) that this stiff stuff! One question rolling around in my head is regarding stock vs. RD sway bars. Is there any downside to running the stiff H&R's with stock M3 bars? Will the springs do too much of the work or will the bars still play a very active roll? Thanks, Rob

#7. Does or will "equal-restraints" rule apply to seats? - from vernon@sprynet.com
Top
Date: Sun, 07 Jan 2001 19:45:54 -0500 From: vernon@sprynet.com Subject: Does or will "equal-restraints" rule apply to seats? Hello everyone, I'm getting closer to pulling the trigger on track seats for my 98 M3/2. I'm going to be in Boston on business the next few days and I plan on stopping at HMS to try some more of them. One thing I (and some other list members judging by email I get) am debating is using a "less strict" seat for the passenger side (like a Recaro SRD that TCKline sells). This is not for cost reasons (the SRD is not cheap for example), but to: 1) allow more flexibility in different passenger sizes and types and generally more comfort and 2:) allow some range of motion so I can tilt forward or recline at least the passenger seat for fair access to the rear seat. Does anyone know if organizations like BMWCCA and PCA will require (or if some chapters already do) not only equal harnesses for both but also equal seats for both? One of the main reasons I'm getting track seats is so I can properly add sub-belts, so both sides will have good Schroth Profi Racing 5-point harnesses. I've been told seats like the SRD are good and strong, so unless anyone has heard rumblings of the equal-restaint rule going to the next level of detail, I may go that route. I sat in an SRD in September and I really liked it. I'm thinking about a Sparco Evo or 2000, or perhaps one of the Cobra models for my butt. Yes, I know it will probably be a real PITA for street driving, but why make my life easy... Thanks for any ideas or advice! Vern Anderson 98 M3/2

Date: Sun, 07 Jan 2001 19:55:18 -0500 From: vernon@sprynet.com Subject: MXX3 pressures Mark, Before I started using Hoosiers, I used to run about 38-40 in the fronts and 36-38 in the rears in the MXX3's. It's been a year and a half or so since I ran on MXX3's (my last auto-x's on street tires was on BFG KD's, those same pressures worked just fine for the KD's). I think that 38-40F and 36-38R would be a good starting point. YMMV. Thats using quite worn out tires. If you have quite a bit of meat on your backs, maybe can crank up to 36 or 37. I guess mark the sides with shoe polish and see how it looks.
