Hard hit on the left front and across the front. Probably a bent left shock tower, punctured radiator, hood, windshield - the works all thanks to a red light runner. Since then I've heard lots of stories about Diminished Value. Does anyone out there have any experience, good or bad, with this that they'd like to share? Thanks, Dave

#2. (was) Stiff suspension . Now big sway bars?! - from Rob

Date: Tue, 9 Jan 2001 21:05:53 -0700 From: "Rob" <motor@cadvision.com> Subject: (was) Stiff suspension . Now big sway bars?! Sorry but this is long! >>Subject: re: Stiff suspension + Sway bars (Ron K) >Got to agree with Ron on this one. Some random thoughts here. The bigger the bars, the more wheel control you sacrifice over one-wheel bumps (like just about all bumps) and more forces get transferred to the chassis. The trade-off is bigger bars mean less body roll under similar cornering conditions on perfectly flat surfaces than smaller bars. The compromise I have settled on is stock bars, Bilsteins + H&R sports. I may go to the later, slightly larger stock rear bar this spring to dial in a little less oversteer.< Soooooo, we seem to have some list members running stock springs/shocks with bigger aftermarket bars, some running stiffer springs/shocks with stock bars and others running with both upgrades. For some these combos are probably chosen because of ride quality and for others it might be financially driven. I already have RD bars so I don't have to shell out any cash and I'm not too concerned with ride quality. What I do want is the best handling car over the greatest number of road and track possibilities. I guess I want the ultimate handling car for road and track regardless of the price I have to pay in ride harshness. I though I was going the in the right direction with H&R coil-overs, RD bars and the X-brace but now I feel the car is too stiff/firm for rough roads and it is probably much slower than a stock M3 in some sections of road. Not good IMHO! My thought is to remove the RD bars and go back to stock M3's to get a little more suspension compliance and travel for the rough stuff. Does this make sense or is my brain too tired today? Also, how is one supposed to figure out how to match the sway bars to the springs and shocks? Obviously BMW does this at the factory but how do you go about it with aftermarket parts? Since my H&R's are very stiff do I need very stiff bars or are the stock bars still a good match? Suspension experts please step in! TIA, Rob

I'm flipping through the beginning of Autoweek (Jan 8, 2001) and I see them saying something about the Pontiac Bonneville SSEi and sports sedan. Somewhere in there BMW is mentioned... Hmmmm...$34,745 for a 3.8L supercharged V6 that puts out 240hp and 280 ft-lbs of torque for a car that weighs ~3800 lbs.... That's a little expensive for a 'murican car, no? I'd get a 330i or something...or a friggin used E36M3!!!! Yeah, baby...yeah (Austin Powers)! I just don't understand it.... If you really want to optimize the suspension, and you're tired of experimenting, go to Dinan. They're expensive, but all the parts will work together. You tell them what you want, hand over your car, your wallet and your left...ummm...arm, and you get back a good setup.
