I'm sure cost has a lot to do with it, Actually, that probably has the only thing to do with it. That and a typical American engine is reliable as hell. BMW motors aren't really all that great you know. Timing belts, plastic impellers, profile gaskets.... American motors are actually very good. BMW Chassis are nice but they can just pull those noses down a notch on motors. All the engine development the Europeans and Asians do is based on one thing. Cost of fuel and the need to still put out enough HP to move an average sized sedan. > but when the metal of an engine is recyclable and the gas that a large > displacement engine (to compensate for something like SOHVs) uses is > not....blah! No wonder Europeans hate America(ns)... They hate us cause we're just so damn cute. That and they can't sweep the German horde out of their backyards by themselves ;) People generally get testy when they view us as rich, snotty and ignorant of the rest of the world. So what :) > I also like a recent shootout between SUVs which showed the X5 to be among the > best in crash tests. YAY! The X5 is basically an enlarged 5 series. It should do well. The others are trucks and with the heavy frames, won't crumple as easily. Jim

#2. RE: [E36M3] I don't understand why...rear-facing seats - from Robert Jackowitz

They figure that anything in that rear seat is going to get squashed in a rear-end collision. Most other makers do put third seats in their wagons. Therefore, either BMW does not have the technology to safely implement a third seat or other automakers are risking the lives of their third seat passengers.

Stock ones out, stock ones back in. Thanks to racepad.com for the very thorough instructions. CD changer was a b*** to get back on though. Well, it seems that i've misdiagnosed the problem in the first place. Mounts that came out were just fine. Same noises when I let off the gas and keep it in gear, as well as starting from a standstill. Kind of a bonk, clunk from the rear left and not as often from the right. Sounds suspension related, but i'm not discounting the rear differential. Any advice? Suspension upgrades are on hold until this is remedied. I just had the rear toe trailing control arm link arm bushings replaced. How's that for a part name! I might check to see if they are properly tightened. Date: Wed, 10 Jan 2001 17:04:51 -0500 From: vincent.a.leo@us.arthurandersen.com Subject: Toyo RA-1 I thought someone said something about Toyo offering the RA-1 in 235 40 17 this year. I understand that they offer them in 235 45 17, but I was looking for something closer to the stock M3 tire size. My local mechanic carries Toyo, but he was unable to find anything about the 235 40 17. Any thoughts? The Michelin's profile seemed to be a little lower and the AVS tire was definetly taller than the Michelin. Both tires were stamped 235/40/17. I found it to be odd. Any thoughts? Both Twisty & I mentioned this, after speaking (at different times) with Toyo reps. I think the lastest info that Twisty posted was February availability. I had heard the rather vague "spring". You probably could email Toyo and get more recent info(?). Cheers, Jim Bassett 1998 M3/4

#10. sway bars 101 - from Mdriver13@aol.com
Top
Date: Wed, 10 Jan 2001 19:38:52 EST From: Mdriver13@aol.com Subject: sway bars 101 Another question to ponder for the Group. All this talk about setting Eibach sway bar to soft/stiff, soft/soft, etc., etc. has me thinking (very dangerous). Based on Ben Liaw's (UUC) info, since the Eibach's are 26mm diameter front and 24mm diameter rear the percentage increase in stiffness for the '95 M3 is 78% and 155% and for the '96-'99 M3 63% and 107% over OEM sways. These numbers are based on ALL other parameters being equal, including bar geometry. Therefore, my question is: Based on the fact the Eibach sway bars have two adjustment holes...which hole lines up to be the same or nearly the same as the OEM sway bars??? Equal bar geometry. Even if I use the same hole settings front/rear, based on the calculations I will almost be two times stiffer in the rear, those with MY95 will be twice as stiff. Is this correct thinking?? Did anyone lay these bars down on the ground to see how the holes line up compared to the OEM bars??? Just trying to reach a high state of BS knowledge ;-)) Bob Gill 97 ///M3 coupe Philly Region SCCA AS Champion 1997 & 2000 13 BSP 2001
