#1. [OT] Good Windshield Replacement in SF Bay Area? - from Andrew E. Kalman

Date: Wed, 10 Jan 2001 18:10:37 -0700 From: "Andrew E. Kalman" <aek@pumpkininc.com> Subject: [OT] Good Windshield Replacement in SF Bay Area? Hi All. Sorry for the OT post -- our family's '98 Contour just had its rear window smashed (not sure if it was vandalism or maybe a baseball or skateboard or something). I had my E36 M3's windshield replace in CO Springs in 1999, and I'd say it's definitely not as good as when it left the factory. So, can anyone recommend a _really good_ and conscientious windshield installer in the SF Bay Area (preferably on the Peninsula)? And also, is there anything I can do to "prep" the car so that the replacement ends up being as good as new? The guys in CO Springs told me that they only cut away half of the sealant / bonding agent so as to ensure a good seal with the car's metal -- but then, the glass sticks up higher than it should. I want to avoid that this time 'round. Thanks, -- ______________________________________ Andrew E. Kalman, Ph.D. aek@pumpkininc.com

I think if you were to ride around in a supercharged M3 you would be very surprised. You would still have the great torque feel but you would also get the pin back feel as the RPM's climb. I'm sure a Turbo M3 would do the same but the power would come on different.<< I'm sorry if it didnt come across in my post but, yes, this is exactly what I was trying to convey.....The stock M3 is indeed torquey...What is different between it, and my SC version is a matter of degree...Since power delivery is linear, its' delivery is not that different from stock , as the shape of the curve will testify to. But the 120 extra HP just delivers it that much stronger, allowing for an approximate second improvement in 0-60 times. The Turbo, however, sounds much more similar to the Porshe's delivery style, ie, the opposite of linear, or peaky. So, it kind of depends on how you like your power, as to which one you would favor.... _____________________________ Paul Elliott '99 Alpine White M3 <25000 mi Forged M dbl-spokes; Rotex pads; Dinan Stage II Supercharger; Stygar Short Shift kit and Clutch Stop; Skaggs Pedals; X-brace; Sound by Kenwood Excelon, Polk, JL Audio

Bora, BMW doesn't put a rear-facing third seat in the Touring models because the rear portion of the Touring model serves as the crush zone for a rear-end collision. So, either Ford/Mercury has engineered the rear of their station wagons to protect occupants in the rear-facing third seat, or ... uh ... <gulp> ... I know that Mercedes and Audi both put a rear-facing third seat in their touring models (E320, A6 Avant), so I'd be curious to hear how/if those occupants are protected. -rb >Date: Wed, 10 Jan 2001 10:58:13 -0800 >From: "Bora Akyol" <akyol@akyol.org> >Subject: Re: [E36M3] I don't understand why..... > >I agree with Sean. > >We just bought a 2001 Mercury Sable Wagon with the 200-hp 24V V6, abs, >all-speed traction control, side airbags and all amenities for $24K. And starts at a higher initial torque and horsepower point on the curve. When you add more than 150 horsepower it gets to be *less* linear above the 100HP point. Think Dinan SC from 3500 upto 4500 rpm and then OH SHIT! Below 3500 a turbo is to a Dinan SC what a M3 is to a 328. Other than that, they're pretty much the same :) Then you get things like the ASC just shutting off until you turn the car off. Not flickering. Not lighting up momentarily in corners. Just shutting off in complete confusion. Another neat side effect is stomping on the gas in third at 70 on the highway and having the tires boil smoke off through 4th. Other than those little things, a turbo is exactly like a Dinan SC :) Jim Paul Elliott wrote: > Date: Wed, 10 Jan 2001 22:01:31 -0500 > From: "Paul Elliott" <pelliott@rcn.com> > Subject: : Slightly OT: 911t (sorry) > > Hi Chad, > > >>. Volvo 850 Turbo..There's a company called IPD in Portland , which kind of has the market cornered on hotting up volvos...Anyway, for $1K, I changed out my ECU, and as a result, got 275 hp and ft lbs of turbocharged grunt.... Then, to make it even more exciting, they told me I could shorten (or was it lengthen...its been a while) the wastegate actuator rod, and thereby, prolong the point where bleed-off begins....I found that if I wasnt careful, I'd do the wheel spin thing anytime I got on the gas! This was with an automatic also, as that's the only way it came in '95. To say it wasnt fun would be lying....Anybody who still carried the idea that Volvo had to be boring never had a ride in this car...the suspension sucked big time, and it was no sports car, but 5.8 seconds with an automatic wasnt bad for a family trawler! Anyway, I fell in love with that turbo....I just had a colleague at GE who had $15K he wanted to spend, and sent his car via covered wagon on down the Hughs in Fla. Although, his is a '98 and therefore could have gotten their new OBDII implementation, for some reason, he went with the OBDI reversion. He's thrilled with the result, and with the support they gave him...Apparently, something was not quite right, so they actually put an in house mechanic on a plane, flew him to Connecticut for the day, where he fixed the problem at the residence! Now THAT'S what I call support!! Honestly, I do believe that if AA had a satellite shop up here, I'd very possibly have gone that route....I do love the SC though....Cept the only time its not all it should be is in July and August....But the rest of the time, I dont exactly miss not having an intercooler!! regards _____________________________ Paul Elliott '99 Alpine White M3 <25000 mi Forged M dbl-spokes; Rotex pads; Dinan Stage II Supercharger; Stygar Short Shift kit and Clutch Stop; Skaggs Pedals; X-brace; Sound by Kenwood Excelon, Polk, JL Audio -----Original Message----- From: Jim Powell <jsp98m3@apexcone.com> To: Paul Elliott <pelliott@rcn.com> Cc: E36M3 <e36m3@bmw-m.net> Date: Wednesday, January 10, 2001 10:50 PM Subject: Re: [E36M3] : Slightly OT: 911t (sorry) >I was just yanking your chain. My humble opinion follows: Volvo, Audi, Mercedes, Ford/Mercury put third seats in the back of the wagons. They achieve this by designing a different rear suspension and different subframe and energy distribution pattern through the car's body. This means that they are essentially designing a second car in terms of crash worthiness when they design a wagon. If you frequent the volvo boards, you can pull out a few messages that describe how this is achieved in case of Volvo. I basically think that BMW designs the wagons of the exact same platform as the sedans and hence can not put a third seat in the back. In either case, I would not have bought a BMW wagon for the price that they sell it without the third seat. We are getting way off topic here so let's kill this thread. Based on others comments on how the computer measures (or not) wear and tear, my car must be thoroughly abused. I bought it with about 29K miles so I don't get to take full credit for all that fun though. The dealer charges back to BMW were about $380. I noticed a pamphlet in the waiting room listing charges for an inspection II at about $650 - if I remember correctly. Obviously BMW gets a fair discount - thus they rightfully earn their name "STEALER." By the way, they did not put synthetic oil in at this change. My records from the previous owner showed BMW synthetic at the previous changes. Did the '98 models come from the factory with synthetic? If so I'm going to push for another free change back to the synthetic.
