#2. Wheels & Tahrs, Tyres, Tires - from Chip E.

Date: Tue, 16 Jan 2001 07:56:04 -0800 (PST) From: "Chip E." <chip4bmw@yahoo.com> Subject: Wheels & Tahrs, Tyres, Tires Hey Chester, good to see you again. Just a tip on selecting and installing valve stem caps. Stay away from the cute plastic caps. Even with anti-seeze, I've seen them become one with the stem. When that happens you have no choice but to dismount the tire and replace the valve stem. While we're on the subject, may I remind those of you with aftermarket wheels to carry an extra set of lugs. If you have to install the spare, most lugs for aftermarket wheels are longer and will prevent your factory wheel from rotating. Finally, lay off NTB. They're a chain. If you're gonna slam 'em , give us a specific location. It's not reasonable to think that they have the exact same service throughout the country...geez. If you're anal, like most of us are, I've found that it's best to let them know up front. Explain to them that you take very good care of your car and wheels. Explain that you know there aren't any scratches or road rash on the wheels now and that you expect them to look the same when returned to you. Explain that you would like them hand torqued. If they choose to send you away, so be it. But if they go ahead and do the job, you'll have a much better chance of your expectations being met. I discovered this after having to send back about 80% of the New York Strip stakes that I've ordered around the country. I like it medium well, and I ellaborate my full expectations to the wait staff. We all have a part in managing expectations. - Chip Chester Wrong Wrote: >I just have to find some nice caps to replace the BMW >ones since the thin BMW >caps on metal valves looks a bit silly. Yup...'tis why I was asking for recommendations. I guess I'd have to find out what the BMW metal valve stems are made of. I'd guess stainless so I guess I have to find some stainless caps. > If you're anal, like most of us are, I've found that > it's best to let them know up front. Good sound advice. It's just that when someone like Rob Levinson recommends a shop in NJ, you expect them to be careful. Of course, knowing what I do now, I can undestand why my wheels were gouged and his are never. > I discovered this after having to send back about 80% > of the New York Strip stakes that I've ordered around > the country. What's your preference...mahogany, maple, birch, or good 'ol pine? +) Best regards, Chester ===== __________________________________________________ Do You Yahoo!? I did not think the nut for the BMW > metal valve stem would fit. Am I wrong? I have those parts sitting on my monitor stand (they should probably be individually wrapped and placed in an envelope in my car so that I always have them handy). I've heard that there's an art to installing them onto certain BMW wheels. Not sure, though. When I picked up the metal valve stems, I walked over to their wheel display an proceeded to install one on a forged M3 wheel. Of course, the people thought I was some sort of hoodlum trying to deface the wheel or something.. They were out there in a jiffy! =) "Sir, do you need some help?" "Naw....just seeing if this part with fit onto my M3." Then they realize that my car is in for service. For the forged M3 wheel, I don't see a problem as I was able to easily use my hands. I guess I should have tried the stock double split spokes and M Contours, huh? Chester ===== __________________________________________________ Do You Yahoo!? Get email at your own domain with Yahoo! I'm not crazy about the 20" AZEV wheels...they make the brakes look tiny. Rear brakes are 322mm. SD

Poor service from NTB isn't a new phenomena either, I had my experience at least 5 years ago when I still owned a 91 Galant VR4. Won't be sad to see them go.

In tiny tiny letters, the lower one said "Illum", I think. Pressing and holding it for a couple of seconds caused the colors to change from green to amber (or back). Pressing and releasing immediately had some other function - maybe scrolling through the bass, treble, etc. settings. Good luck. -Chris > -------------------- 10 -------------------- > Date: Tue, 16 Jan 2001 09:24:47 -0500 > From: lee.leslie@firstunion.com > Subject: Anyone have a sony head unit > > Obligatory BMW content.. So go to: http://www.toyo.com/ and use their "Find a Dealer" feature. If you're in the SF Bay Area, a few places to get them are: Cain's Tire - San Rafael AIM Tire - Sears Point Raceway Roger Kraus Racing - Castro Valley I've purchased Toyos from all 3 shops. Prices very similar, service is good. Special note for AIM Tire being on-site at a lot of NASA and Club Race events. Cheers, Jim Bassett 1998 M3/4 - likes the RA-1s for the track

Ed, I went with Warranty Direct (www.warrantydirect.com) at the end of December. They seemed to be the most reputable (and one of the cheapest actually). I got their Diamond 6 year/100k mi/$0 deductible warranty for $1775.00 (they had a sale (free) for the $0 deductible option). I haven't had to use it yet... good thing I suppose. From the research I did on the Web and on the recommendation of one person on the list (thank you Alex and Wayne by the way), I chose this over WarrantyGold (www.warrantygold.com), WarrantyByNet (www.warrantybynet.com), and the assorted others. Also, the dealer option offered to me was pretty bogus deductible-wise. It's $0 to fix it at the dealer, but $100 if you want to go elsewhere. And make sure you get an exclusionary+wear&tear warranty unless you know exactly which parts you want covered. That should help avoid any shaftery later on when you may really need it. --- joe >>>>>>>>>>> >-------------------- 9 -------------------- >Date: Mon, 15 Jan 2001 10:19:51 -0500 >From: "ENF" <enf@iglou.com> >Subject: Extended Warranty >>>>>>>>>>>>
