But seriously, I had similar problems in my '97 M3 with manual seats. I had to contort my seat into a somewhat unnatural driving position to fit in there with my helmet. This despite having the seat lowered all the way down (manual seat had vertical adjustment as well). This problem went away for me as soon as I installed a Schroth belt on the driver's seat. The Schroth belt is a 4 point harness designed to be installed on stock seats. 2 ends of it attach to the seat belt rails of the front seats, 1 or 2 (depending on your car & belt purchased) install where the rear seatbelts attach. It has a buckle between the front & rear pieces so that when you're not using the belt, it stows out of the way and you have full use of your back seat. The Schroth belt, when tightened down as far as it will go, pulls me down into the seat far enough to where I no longer have a problem with my helmet hitting the roof. It also pulls me back into the seat some. What I do is move my seat one notch closer, put the helmet on, then tighten the belts down. When the belts are tightened, I'm in a good driving position - just right distance from the seat, and no vertical clearance problems. As an added bonus, the belt holds me far more firmly in the seat as I'm dodging cones! A win-win solution! Andrej '97 M3

#2. lowering stock seats... - from Kit Wetzler

Swapping in my Sparco Sprint is *really* easy. Remove front two nuts and the rear two bolts, unplug 4 connectors (assuming you have power seats), disarm tensioner (either turn the screw if you have a power seat, or disconnect the cable if you have a manual seat... make sure the little window is red, though) then lift seat out. Remove T-50 bolt holding left side seat belt anchor, remove 16mm nut holding right side buckle/tensioner, then remove the buckle. My harnesses mount to the tabs that I made for the seat bracket and are clip in... the shoulder harnesses go to the rear seat belt mounts. Now, install your sparco. Bolt tensioner and buckle to right side of the seat, bolt the anchor and belt to the left side of the seat (we don't want to use racing harnesses on the street on the way to the track) and put the nuts/bolts back in. You're done. -kit

Then I get back to my desk, check my email, and find out I've got >my >shocks set backwards. Now that's service! well... if you set the rears to 3/4 and all you want is the understeer/oversteer balance back you can put the fronts at about 1.25 turns. that's the easy way to go. this'll make the car balanced, (the stiffer the fronts, the less understeer you'll get, up to a point (about 3 turns)) but the car will be overall a little stiff. for smooth roads or tracks it shouldn't be a problem, and might even be more to you're liking. for rough roads, it's gonna be a bit harsh, and you might find your rear heels "hopping" over bumps. if i were you, before i removed my rear shocks to adjust them (what a pain) i'd try stiffening the fronts. just to see if you like it. in fact... i never tried 3/4 turn on the rear. formy my 4th attempt i was at 1 turn (too stiff) and next i went down to 1/2. this seemed ok, and i was NOT in the mood to remove them for the 5th time to try 3/4 turn. so... if you like your 3/4 turn setup let me (us) know. it might be the way to go. ;-) _________________________________________________________________ Get your FREE download of MSN Explorer at http://explorer.msn.com

#5. Tires and Water Pump - from Patrick Sarne

Date: Wed, 17 Jan 2001 12:17:07 -0800 From: Patrick Sarne <patrick.sarne@hoylecapital.com> Subject: Tires and Water Pump Just last week, I put on another set (2 in a row now) of Yoko AVS Intermediates (245/40-17). I picked them up at Discount tire here in San Diego (brrr!-it got down to 38 degrees this morning!! :) How are those seat warmers, Jim?) and they matched the Tire Rack price of $108 (IIRC). Great tires for the price since I have a set of track wheels. I've also had the Bridgy RE-71 which I also liked a lot as well. The RE-71 is directional and can be mounted inside-out for those with lots-o negative camber. The AVS-i is asymmetric so you can't do the inside-out deal, BUT you can rotate to-and-from any position on the car if you like (only if you have all the same size for you boneheads). Just thought you'd like to know. Also, I changed the water pump on my 95 M3 this past weekend. Fairly simple task. Thanks to Steve D for the great deal on the parts. My car has almost 92,000 miles and the old plastic pump looked brand new! Just another data point. Still, I would recommend changing yours if you know its plastic. Patrick Sarne San Diego 1995 M3 1992 Toyota P/U <--143k miles and only on its 2nd set of tires! The first set lasted over 80k!!

He consulted with TC Kline prior to purchasing his suspension, and it consists of Koni dampers and H&R springs. I drove it last fall, and it felt great. The car felt planted, it was responsive, and it didn't seem to be any harsher on bumps than my stock-suspended '95 M3. When it's suspension time, I'd seriously consider this package for my car. He also added the TC Kline rear control arm bushings, which seem to have cured the rear-end "squirreliness" that he was experiencing at the track. -rb _________________________________________________________________ Get your FREE download of MSN Explorer at http://explorer.msn.com
