#1. Seat bolster wear - from Robert_Manger@mastercard.com

Date: Thu, 25 Jan 2001 15:22:26 -0500 From: Robert_Manger@mastercard.com Subject: Seat bolster wear What are the thoughts about having a seat cover to preempt this type of wear. Do they help at all or do they do nothing to help the situation. The reason I ask is that i am looking at some custom cotton covers from BRM to use at track schools Rob Date: Thu, 25 Jan 2001 14:10:28 -0500 From: "NickG" <nikog@mediaone.net> Subject: Seat bolster wear The driver's side seat bolster in the E36 M3 is prone to premature wear due to the basic design of the seat. It is possible to have the leather replaced under warranty under certain conditions though. One of the major reasons for the leather wearing through is because the seat foam underneath tears. When the seat foam tears, the metal framework of the seat begins to rub on the leather. At first, this wear will start tearing the thread apart. Given enough time, the leather will develop a hole. This kind of wear is completely covered under the standard BMW 4yr/50K warranty. The key is for the foam to be split. If the leather is worn through, but the foam is still intact, then that's just normal wear and tear (or maybe even lack of care). But if the foam is torn, the dealer should have no problems replacing both the foam and the leather. Been there, done that. If you detect that the seat foam is torn, do yourself a favor and wait till the leather and/or stitching is also showing signs of wear. That way, you'll get the leather replaced also. Nick

They might prevent you from scratching or gouging the leather, but I'd think that dust and dirt that might accumulate between the leather and cover might actually wear out the leather faster. IMHO, I think seat covers are fugly!!! The funny thing was when I placed the order for my car, I almost opted for the "tritone" color scheme for the interior. I saw it on a car that was on the showroom floor (techno violet exterior) that had the headrest and side bolsters a darker gray color and the inside squares (where your butt and back rest on) a lighter gray color. Not sure if anyone else has ever seen it, but I sure did think it was nice looking. Luckily I didn't get it as these seats wear extremely quickly....maybe it's the fact that the steering wheel doesn't tilt or that my 5'7" frame requires the seat to be further forward in order to reach the pedals comfortably...I dunno.... If I could ever get the dealer to replace my leather under the 4 yr/ 50k mile warranty, that would be awesome! Otherwise, when the seats look really ratty, I'll rip them out and replace them with some Sparcos or something ;) Chester > What are the thoughts about having a seat cover to preempt this type of wear. > Do they help at all or do they do nothing to help the situation. Shane It is not only the end links that make noise, it is also the poly-urethane bushings. This is why the Dinan anti-sway bars come with rubber bushings as far as I know. I also have the UUC sway bars (tubular $$$$), I find that with these if the road is smooth, there is no difference in handling, if the road is rough, the stiffer swaybars roughen up the ride considerably. On the other hand, they have had a positive effect on the handling of my car. I have sort of gotten used to this, but in the long run, I may change these bars for a complete Dinan Stage III setup.
