#1. Heel and toe - from Ed Tang
Top
Date: Sat, 27 Jan 2001 14:14:27 -0800 (PST) From: Ed Tang <etangf1@yahoo.com> Subject: Heel and toe Hi Frank, First advice: Take the process slowly and gradually. It is very awkward when you first do it. Let's say your barrelling down a straight in fourth gear at 90 mph and the next corner requires a third gear downshift and your speed going in should be ~65 mph. Personally, while I'm on the straight I've already spotted my turn-in point and locating the apex. At your brake marker you begin braking and prepare for the downshift. So I'm hard on the brakes and I'm already searching for my optimal track-out staring through the apex. Under braking (toe) I would blip the throttle with my heel. You should have slowed down enough to ~65-70 mph and you heel and toed to match revs b/w the input and output shafts. You should already be in gear before the turn-in point. Depending on the turn, I will still trail on the brakes to pivot the car a bit and accelerate hard at the apex. You should be at your track-out point at this time and look for your next corner. On the street, you're just doing it at sane speeds. Brake, depress clutch while blipping the throttle, gear it and accelerate out. It is very awkward at first so don't be alarmed. Doing it patiently and slowly will reap huge rewards. Nest thing you'll be doing is double clutching:-) Ed --- "F. Date: Sat, 27 Jan 2001 18:09:32 -0500 From: Jeremy.Thissell@USPTO.GOV Subject: Re: Heel Toe website... Here's a website that talks about it. There was a really good site on shifting techniques, that covered everything from rev matching to heel/toe to double clutching. It was written by a 318ti driver that tracks his car regularly, and it used to be on the 318ti webring, but I couldn't get to it/find it. It's how I learned EXACTLY what everyone meant by 'heel toe', but ultimately it will take practice. About the same amount of practice it takes to learn to drive a stick in the first place. http://www.unofficialbmw.com/all/track/all_teach_bob_to_heel_and_toe.html Good luck, -Jeremy Jeremy Thissell Patent Examiner Art Unit 3763 US Patent Office > -----Original Message----- > > Frank wrote: > > "well, we're on the subject. #3. P-cars prepare to be destroyed! - from David Hogg

Date: Sat, 27 Jan 2001 18:49:18 -0800 From: "David Hogg" <springwood@blazenet.net> Subject: P-cars prepare to be destroyed! Thanks to all who organized the PTG tour today, and thanks to our gracious host Tom Milner! Well, it's true! Beall Motorsports will be running a new (never turned a wheel!) PTG E46 M3 with an M5 motor at Daytona. It's being shipped tomorrow for practice Monday. Soon the PTG cars will have the same motor, which is a slightly PTG-tweaked, stock M5 5-liter V8. Later in the season when the new German-built E46 M3's arrive, they'll have new-for-2001 4-liter DTM racing motors in them. Ooooooooh, this is going to be fun! Check it out: http://albums.photopoint.com/j/AlbumIndex?u=1342632&a=11222268 Milner also said that (his opinion, based on seeing test mules) BMW would never put a V8 into the M3 race cars without intending to put one in the road car, too. Don't expect it, though, until (his guess) the 2006 model year. No word yet on the 4-door E46 M3, but thanks to the 20 folks who sent me the notes. Tom Purvis will get them next week. BMW NA already wants them to be built, but the notes will give him some more ammo. Dave Hogg 98 M3/4

#5. X Coupe Show Car - from Wayne Miller
Top
Date: Sun, 28 Jan 2001 10:36:37 -0500 From: "Wayne Miller" <m3@waynemiller.com> Subject: X Coupe Show Car Yesterday, I was driving down 11th Avenue in NYC and all of the sudden, I notice that the BMW X Coupe show car is turning around on the other side of the street. It took me a few seconds to comprehend what was going on but they had just unloaded it off the enclosed trailer and were driving it into BMW of Manhattan (which is owned by BMWNA). In my opinion, it is as ugly in person as it is in the pictures that I had seen ( http://www.bmw.com/bmwe/pulse/events/detroit/xcoupe.shtml ). Of course, I didn't realize until I was further away that the new M3 convertible was probably also in the trailer but, at that point, I didn't have time to go back and look. In E36M3 news, everything is coming together nicely for my driveline upgrade. The lightweight flywheel is in, the 6 speed is due this week and my diff has been sent to Blantant Transmissions for its rebuild with the 3.73 r&p. Hopefully it will all be installed in about 2 weeks. -Wayne '99 M3/2 Black/Magma

I don't think the mini spoiler and the mini flared fenders do enough the differentiate it. I was looking for something along the lines of the E30 M3. Bora
