#2. Anti-sway bar bushing experiment - from Bora Akyol

Date: Tue, 30 Jan 2001 11:19:45 -0800 From: "Bora Akyol" <akyol@akyol.org> Subject: Anti-sway bar bushing experiment With the help of two different digesters, I have ordered a rear set of bushings and a front set of bushings that are made out of rubber and reputedly fit the UUC bars. I will swap these in in a few weeks and report on the results as far as quieting the ride down and handling changes. I am suspecting that the rubber bushings will be somewhat easier on the mounting brackets too. Bora

Steve, I have the Bimmerworld kit as well and will mirror Mark's comments. I really like the kit, especially the fact that you can disconnect the hoses from the wheel well to the backing plate when you are on the street. I also recommend replacing the hoses with the better silicone hose. Mark mentions the directions were not very good. That is true, but if you go to their web site, they have the entire installation process with pictures. I printed them out and the whole thing went very smoothly. One thing I noticed after using them for a while, was that the weight of the ducting was causing the wheel well liner to rip around the mounting bolts. This caused the entire wheel well liner to sag. I heartily recommend reinforcing the liner area around the bolt that is right above the area where you install the flange. At first I tried using a big washer on the bolt, but that ripped as well and I eventually riveted in a piece of sheet metal to support it, which has held up well for a year now. Doing it preemptively will save you the trouble of having to rig up something when it does fail. Hope this helps, Shane Kleinpeter Tarheel Chapter '96 M3 '88 535is And now a word from our sponser... Same for the fasteners. - They can be installed without removing the bearing/hub assembly. I realize you're doing that anyhow, so did I. This way you can easily remove the stock backing plates while the hubs are off, and add the BW parts later if need be. - The flange coupling allows uncompromised street use. (Steering lock is limited with the flange to plate hose in place.) - The hoses are a generous 3" diameter. I'm sure the TMS ducts are fine, but they're more suited to a pure track car where you don't have to worry about daily practicality. they also require hub removal. I measured front rotor temperatures on my car with one side ducted, the other not, and got an improvement of over 200 degrees F with the ducting after several hard stops. These ducts really work. You're right - the BimmerWorld instructions aren't great. I've installed 2 sets of these ducts, one on my M3, the other on an E36 325i. Here are some tips, which you should read in conjunction with the instructions and pictures on the BW web site.: - Buy a 3" diameter hole saw to use in your electric drill. This way you can cut quick, clean, accurate holes in the plastic wheel arch liners and anywhere else you need to (see below). Cost is about $15 at your hardware store. - On my M3 I already had the JTD Stage I (there never were any further stages...) duct kit and undertray. I kept the JTD inlets which mount behind the M3 mesh grille, and plumbed them to the BW flanges. Very unobtrusive, works great. - The 325i had no previous aftermarket ducts, so we ran the hoses into the stock BMW brake ducts. This is the standard BW install. However BW says to cut the stock ducts in two. That's a bad idea, because they lose their support at the rear, and it's just not necessary. Instead I cut out two 3" circles close together on the inner wall of the stock duct. Then I snipped the plastic between them with kitchen shears, to end up with a large oval slot. The 3" flexible duct is then laid into this slot at a tangent. You end up with the stock moulded plastic duct still in place and fully supported, and the flexible BW duct emerging from it to join up to the flange. This is very tidy, and very easy to do. As I'm probably going to install some ducting as well (and will most likely use the BW kit), does anyone have feedback on ducts to use in the foglight area? Are the included ones in the BW kit OK, or are there other better choices? (The cracked, useless, POS foglights have been removed for a while, awaiting this upgrade :-)). Thanks, Jim Bassett 1998 M3/4

According to my friend (who wouldn't be pulling my leg, I hope) the designer had a VERY light blue (almost silver) M3 convertible. Darker blue top. Apparently a possible 2002 year model. From what I can gather from my friend (who isn't bimmer savvy, take with a grain of salt) this is one of 4 variations of the new M3. 310 Horsepower, 5sp, light grey leather interior. My colleague did drive the car around and said it was, "wow." I hope that was an understatement. So is my leg being pulled? The person in question did say that it looked smoother than mine and had the M3 badge on it. a sketpical Jonathan Evans 95 M3 Raleigh, NC
