Cost of ownership has to remain on the low side. Is it even advisable? For me, I spend $$$$ on whatever goodies, but her family isn't as fortunate. Should I advise her into looking into something more reliable like a Toyota? Anyway, I think she's looking to spend $5k on a used car for the family. I was thinking of an early E36 318i (how much more would it be for a 6 cyl car), slushbox (father doesn't know and probably doesn't want to be bothered with a manual), 4dr... Anyone have one for sale in the tri-state area? Thanks, Chester ===== __________________________________________________ Do You Yahoo!? Get email at your own domain with Yahoo! Date: 27 Feb 2001 14:22:13 -0800 From: dHoleman@spooze.com Subject: Buying Forgelines I have noticed a number of used Forgeline wheels come up for sale and wanted to throw in my two cents. First of all these are great wheels and I own two sets so I am not here to knock them. There are two very similar models that look very much the same but are actually quite different and you should be sure which model you are getting. The RS model has the valve stem inside rim behind the spokes. The RC model has the valve stem outside the spokes. The RC is the race model. It has a thinner hub but plenty of offset to clear large brake calipers. With the valve stem outside the spokes they do not interfere with the large brake calipers. The RS is more of a street model. Even though the offset is fine for large brake calipers the inside set valve stem will hit the caliper. You will not have a problem with the RS model if you are running the stock calipers (the ones that came with your car) but you will have trouble if you have the Movit Big Brake or other like brake kit. www.racepad.com www.racepad.com

#4. New address for Leathermaster - from Skip Bogard

Date: Tue, 27 Feb 2001 17:23:35 -0500 From: Skip Bogard <Skip.Bogard@ALUMni.DUKE.edu> Subject: New address for Leathermaster Somebody file this away 'cause one day I'm gonna ask if anyone has the address! Info & leather care story courtesy of Duane <burp> "RR" Collie. The "SunSafe" kit is a dye & cleaner prep, and probably the thing you need to fix slightly cracked leather (esp. light gray) right about now. It's the one hundreds of have used on their 95' 96' high mileage muscle machines. By now those L-M folks should have assigned names to the color mixes for our BMW's. Anybody know for sure? If not, a swatch can be obtained by removing your rear seat & going underneath. - Skip _______________ From: "Duane Collie" <drcollie@keepingroom.com> Subject: New address for Leathermaster For all of you looking for the Leathermaster web site, they have a new one and have moved their U.S. operations from S.C. to FL. Here's the web site address: http://www.stainsafe.com/ssafe/dept.asp?dept%5Fid=400 FYI, I had a Bradington Young ($$$$) leather sofa that had become sun-bleached from the skylights in my old house (Analine dyes don't tolerate UV rays well). Moved it into the new digs and it looked like crap. Beat-up, used up, ......shot. Wife sez: "That sofa has to go....maybe put it in the kid's rec room". I said, "I can fix it". Sent off a color swatch of the leather (small cutting from the underside) to the Leathermaster people and they mixed up the color and sent it back in a "sun safe kit" for $ 70.00. Yesterday I did the sofa with the kit (you MUST follow the directions exactly) and today when Mrs. Collie came downstairs she was shocked and quite pleased at how good it looked. In fact, it looked pretty damn close to the day it was new. These kits really work so long as the leather is not more than 50% bleached out, and it has not started dry-rotting or is heavily cracked to the point the hide is fractured. Stuff is not cheap, but then the good stuff usually isn't. -Duane Collie

GRUMBLE!!!!!!! is this computer trying to kill me? Remember the debut of the new Airbus at the Paris Air Show some years ago? This was the first all fly-by-wire commercial airliner. The pilot was going to do a slow pass down the runway in landing configuration then execute a go-round without touching down. Well, apparently his air-show routine didn't sit so well with the computers. The computer assumed that having the flaps and gear down and getting so close to the runway at such a slow speed meant that he _had_ to land. Pilot tried like hell to keep it flying, the computer tried like hell to land. End result? Mushroom cloud in the woods about 1/4 mile past the end of the runway. Airbus gave a little redesign to the software after that. Two lessons learned when trying to make machines think too much: intuitive acts for humans, when programmed into computers, become massively complex; and there only needs to be one bad line of code to really ruin your day. -- Ron Katona

I guess she wanted to do the, "my dad has worked so hard and sacrificed so much, I want him to enjoy driving a nice car." The strange thing is that her current Honda Civic (I think) is a '90 or '91 w/ 93K miles and it's falling apart. They'd bring it to a hack mechanic who would always nickle and dime them. Funny how they never thought of asking me to fix it....a Hayne manual would do, right? +) Chester --- "F. Graziano" <fgraziano@monmouth.com> wrote: > Date: Tue, 27 Feb 2001 17:39:20 -0500 > From: "F. My brother has a new M5 (2001) and I did the M5 Driving Experience with him in Spartanburg a month and a half ago. The car exhibited none of the behavior that Sean describes and I did many heel and toe downshifts, and used left foot braking during the Autocross competition at the end of the school with no issues. "when you floor it, the computer decides you must be in a panic situation (like about to get hit by a train) and shifts to the gear to give you the best acceleration." sigh. i guess noone ever floors an audi for fun. only when in a panic. good thing i got the manual transmission. ;-P _________________________________________________________________ Get your FREE download of MSN Explorer at http://explorer.msn.com
