#1. HAL 9000 Series - S4 - from AVUSM3@aol.com

Date: Tue, 27 Feb 2001 18:05:00 EST From: AVUSM3@aol.com Subject: HAL 9000 Series - S4 If those two conditions are true for all S4s you would have to cross them off the list of fun cars to take to the track! I can see some of that logic working in normal driving conditions, but that sort of stuff is terrible for the track......I guess I'll be keeping my simplistic, mechanical, old E36 for a while longer... John 1995 M3 - with conventional throttle cable :) i just discovered two reasons NOT to buy an S4. (which is drive by wire) and two things i'm gonna pay particular attention to when i test drive the new M3 (also drive by wire, right?) 1. no throttle off feathering. if you're floored, and lift off the gas pedal AT ALL (even 1/4 inch) all power is cut. as if you had lifted completly. apparently the computer figures that if you want to slow down, you want to slow down alot. imagine my grief as i'm flying around an offramp at the limit, start to develop a push, decide to lift ever so little to get the front tires to hook up, only to have all power cut as if i'd lifted all the way. GRUMBLE!!!!!!! is this computer trying to kill me? 2. no left foot braking, or heel and toeing (unless it's a really fast heel and toe). the computer in the car won't allow both the gas and brake to be on. almost like the electric go carts at crazy red head. the only difference is that you get about 1 seconds of leeway. if you're on the gas, and press the brake for over one second, all throttle is cut. imagine my grief as i'm flying around the next offramp, develop a push, remember that i can't lift or i'm in trouble, decide to use a bit of left foot braking, only to have all power cut as if i'd lifted all the way. GRUMBLE!!!!!!! is this computer trying to kill me?

#3. Intercom Solution - from Jeff Stowe

Date: Tue, 27 Feb 2001 15:10:08 -0800 From: Jeff Stowe <jrstowe@pacbell.net> Subject: Intercom Solution Has anybody found or built from scratch a simple / inexpensive in-car intercom system for use at the track when helmets, wind and engine noise prohibit effective communication? Communication is only needed between driver and passenger (read - instructor). Everything I can seem to find is pretty high end and appears to be more focused on Driver to Pit communication. I just want to be able to hear instuctions and advice more clearly when on the track. Would there be a safety issue with a solution where both earpiece/microphones were plugged into some kind of common amplifier? It seems one of the EE geniuses on this list could pull together something workable from bits and pieces from radio shack. Ayway, as always, any help or insight is greatly appreciated. Also, does anyone know of a good source for BMW take-off wheels? I am looking for a set of the ///M double spokes (I think thats what they are called). They are on a lot of the new 740ILs.I want them for a 96 740iL. thanks jeff 98 M3/4 - still working on the harnesses 93 M5 - doesn't need harnesses.....yet

P.S. i'd rather the car let me bounce off the rev limiter then shift for me. but that's less annoying then having the car shift the other way. _________________________________________________________________ Get your FREE download of MSN Explorer at http://explorer.msn.com

You have the determination of a monk ;) Sean says, "This new M3 is not going to be a track car." Sean says, "This S4 is not going to be a track car." ....and he never took either one for a fun run. That's incredible! Perhaps it's because the pedals on the S4 are lame....wouldn't know...I've never driven one before or sat in one for that matter. Heck, I rarely see S4s on the road. #10. Air compressors - from Chester Wong
Top
Date: Tue, 27 Feb 2001 16:03:55 -0800 (PST) From: Chester Wong <chester_p_wong@yahoo.com> Subject: Air compressors Just wondering if the Porter Cable compressor that Griot's Garage has is really up to the task of powering air tools. I think the one that's advertised is: http://www.portercable.com/cgi-bin/products.cgi?method=byid&prod_id=CPF23400S But it seems that a smaller model has more capacity: http://www.portercable.com/cgi-bin/products.cgi?method=byid&prod_id=CF2400 Are these compressors even worth it? One thing I didn't like is the oil-free design. Is that a necessity since the unit is portable? What's the smallest compressor that anyone would recommend for small tasks? TIA, Chester ===== __________________________________________________ Do You Yahoo!? Get email at your own domain with Yahoo! Mail. http://personal.mail.yahoo.com/
