I rarely post but here I have a chance to contribute cos Chester asked. I have an E36 325i/A for city driving. I can tell you that the BMW 5-speed auto is one of the best autos around. (5 gears plus 1 lockup overdrive - does that make mine 6-speed? :)) The Steptronic allows you to select the gear to be in when accelerating. You can select to move from standstill in 1st, 2nd, 3rd or 4th! (this is in Steptronic - "manual" mode). Yes, I'd be the first to admit that it aint no full Manual with clutch and it is still an autobox. However on acceleration, the computer will change for you at redline. I accidentally did this once. I selected 1st in (what BMW calls) "manual", accelerated out of a junction, rev limiter kicks in before I flicked the gear lever for 2nd, and next thing I knew I was accelerating on 2nd at 4500+rpms. And I dont think the auto will drop a gear if you select a lower gear and the calculated rpms are too high. eg. selecting 1st at 50mph. It will only change down when it is safe to do so. I dont dare try this though. However on all my downshifts on the (pseudo) "manual", it does it there and then (with a bit of lag). JK ---- Chester asks: The BMW Steptronic trannies also upshifts for you when you near redline, no? Also, do you mean that the S4 upshifted or downshifted.... Date: Wed, 28 Feb 2001 06:48:52 EST From: GregKono@aol.com Subject: Re:Wheel sizes I have two sets of stock M3 M power 10 spoke wheels. I have winter tires on one set and 235/40/17 A032R's on the other set. My question is, would the A032R's fit on the 8.5's all around and not rub up front? This would allow bigger track tires and smaller winter (7.5's all around) tire patches. Will this work and has anybody tried this? thanks in advance, Greg Koning 97 M3/4

Date: Wed, 28 Feb 2001 07:29:45 -0500 From: Colin_S_Whelan@rrfc.raytheon.com Subject: [E36M3] Gear whine at low speeds in 1st? All, I was wondering if anyone noticed something that sounds like "gear whining" in 1st gear (only) from about 1200 to 1800 rpm (<10 mph). It's a whirling sounds that raises and drops with rpm (within the indicated range). In any other gear, or at any other rpm, it's not present. I plan to replace the transmission fluid with Redline D4ATF and the differential fluid as well (what weight redline?). Anyone else notice this? Ideas? Thanks! Colin '98 M3, 30K JC, X, ITG

#5. brake ducting issues - from dHoleman@spooze.com
Top
Date: 28 Feb 2001 05:38:47 -0800 From: dHoleman@spooze.com Subject: brake ducting issues Steve did a very nice writeup on the digest on brake ducting. He did mention rubbing against the bimmerworld flange on turn lock. He mentioned that you get the rubbing due to oversize tires and a lowered car. I have coilovers and would like to add that even with standard size tires and wheels you will rub against the flange. The common brake ducting solutions work for most standard setups but be prepared for lots of problems if you are working with a seriously lowered car. This is ironic as most serious track cars, with coilovers, don't have a ready off the shelf brake duct solution. Most tuners that actively race keep their home grown solutions to themselves as it is a major competitive advantage on the track. Also when you go to brake ducting be prepared to frequently replace the hose between the flange and the backing plate. Good silicon brake duct hose costs about $11 a foot. www.racepad.com

Date: 28 Feb 2001 05:42:55 -0800 From: dHoleman@spooze.com Subject: more brake ducting issues Hi, Steve also got caught having trouble installing brake ducts that replace the fog lights. I sell a similar kit and recommend one of two solutions. Do like he did and use large screws to screw into the 4 corners of the duct. I took a different approach and used a high quality silicon caulk and used it to "glue" the duct into place. You have to make sure that you have the duct set just right so it won't move and then let the silicon cure according to the manufacturer's instructions. www.racepad.com

#7. [E36M3] WTB worn tires - from Colin_S_Whelan@rrfc.raytheon.com

Date: Wed, 28 Feb 2001 08:45:27 -0500 From: Colin_S_Whelan@rrfc.raytheon.com Subject: [E36M3] WTB worn tires All, I was wondering if anyone had a set of very well used (worn out) street tires they're taking off their M3 and that they'd be willing to sell. I'm looking for a set of autocross tires for my snow tire rims (17" by 7.5") and don't want to go the slicks route until I have more experience. I'd prefer all 235/40R17s but will consider 225/245 staggered set up, since they should fit. Of course, I'd love to find MXX3, PP S02s with 1/16" of tread... Please send me an email if you have some tires or will be removing your old tires in the coming weeks. I'm located in Boston (for shipping considerations). Thanks! Can anyone tell me what that will consist of.>> Patrick replies: According to the BMW Service Maintenance Checklist (dated 2/95) that I have, plugs, air filter, oil/filter, fuel filter (recommended in CA, where I live), plus diff & tranny fluids every other Insp-II. Also, check and inspect basically EVERYTHING. This is for a 95 M3...I don't know if 96+ is any different. HTH, Patrick Sarne 1995 M3

The mic thing could be under the things to do as the instructor gts dropped off. BTW, the list gets updated as the weekend wears on as far as student feedback. As far as Canadian connectors, I've never heard of such a thing. I'd check that. At least all the Candian dancers I've ever met had all the same connectors :) Jim Carey Probst wrote: > From talking to the instructors at TrackMasters and the GVC CCA > schools, the only problem is the student. > > They have a tendancy to pull out of helmut with cord rather than mic > mount, ripping the wires. > > Also, US mics apparently don't interchange with Canadian ones, > different connectors.
