However, if you are looking for a long term solution, try the unit used by the World Rally Championship Teams. Most teams use Peltor. The other options are OMP and Sparco. The Peltor Units are very reliable but cost about 150 USD or more. These can be ordered through Vermont Sportscars or Sube Sports. There may be other Peltor Dealers in the US, but I do no know of them. www.VTCARS.com www.subesports.com Or they can be ordered from the UK. They are somewhat fragile but work about as good as anything else and the others cost 2 to 3X. If you take reasonable care they hold up OK. My first one lasted 5 years. Since they are reasonably inexpensive, I look at them as another consumable driver school item like brake pads. A good source for the NADY is OG Racing in Virginia. http://www.ogracing.com/ They are listed under helmets and accessories about the 3rd page down. The sell for $59 from OG. Many Motorcycle shops try to get $90 + for these things. If you can somehow arrange to buy at least 10 of these you can get them even cheaper. Last year I bought 10 for our local BMW Chapter to make available for sale at the drivers schools. I believe I got them for about $47 each. Would my love life become even more satisfying? Would my hands stay soft while washing dishes? All good questions. One of these days I'll grow up and answer them. #5. Stuck Throttle Cable/Plate - from Bora Akyol

Date: Wed, 28 Feb 2001 14:12:25 -0800 From: Bora Akyol <akyol@akyol.org> Subject: Stuck Throttle Cable/Plate So I picked up my car from getting the Dinan suspension installed (more on that later) and the radiator/water pump/thermostat replaced. On the way back to work, on the 85 to 280 south on-ramp in Cupertino, I floored it and guess what? My throttle stuck wide open. By the time I realized what the hell was going on, I was going way too fast and had just a few seconds to think. I checked the floor for carpet sticking the pedal, then I slammed on the brakes and essentialy coasted the car to a full stop and turned it off. My mechanic drove over and they lubricated the throttle assembly and checked the butterfly, before they came over, I managed to pop whatever was stuck by working the throttle assembly repeatedly. Throughout all this, the gas pedal was working as expected with the right tension. So any suggestions on what can be wrong? Has anyone had a similar problem on an M3? Any help will be appreciated as I am pretty spooked. Bora

Date: Wed, 28 Feb 2001 15:01:10 -0800 From: Bora Akyol <akyol@akyol.org> Subject: Dinan Suspension Impressions Dinan Stage III suspension installed on a 95 M3 (mine) Ride quality: Very comparable to stock, stiff but not harsh very good damping control. Front shocks set to 1.25 turns and the rear seat to 1.125 turns from full soft. Both sway bars and springs are powder coated in blue. Very very nice ride. Cornering: Very good, very flat and excellent turn-in and stick (you get to notice that when your throttle is stuck wide open). I will know more when I am autocrossing next time. But overall, I am very impressed. Turn in is very sharp, there is very minimal body roll and the ride is quiet and stiff but not harsh. Recommended. Bora ps. It comes with front strut tower reinforcement plates.

#8. Question on Yok A032 tire rotation - from Andrew E. Kalman
Top
Date: Wed, 28 Feb 2001 15:40:41 -0700 From: "Andrew E. Kalman" <aek@pumpkininc.com> Subject: Question on Yok A032 tire rotation Hi All. I'm wondering whether Yokohama A032s can be run "backwards" (i.e. against the rotation arrow on the sidewall) without ill effects. Perhaps someone can shed some light on this? I know you can take the tires off and re-mount them "inside out" to prolong their life, but in this case I want to move them side-to-side. Is the rotation arrow really there just for wet weather use, as the tread is directional, or is there more to it? In general, do tires tend to "take a set" in terms of their rotation? It used to be that tires would get rotated front to opposite back and back to front, but now it's just front-to-back and back-to-front. But that's probably because many cars have different front and rear tire and wheel sizes. The A032's in question are only used on the track, and are a mix of 3/4 tread left and 1/4 tread left. After all, you can rotate Hoosiers side-to-side ... why not Yoks? Thanks, -- ______________________________________ Andrew E. Kalman, Ph.D. aek@pumpkininc.com

#9. tire wear bars - from Paul Elliott

Date: Wed, 28 Feb 2001 19:40:08 -0500 From: "Paul Elliott" <pelliott@rcn.com> Subject: tire wear bars At what tread level are the wear bars set? I thought they were at approx 2/32". I just recieved my monthly reminder from BMW finance that all this fun isnt free, and in the enclosure, it had paragraph which said that tires are ready to be replaced when the 'tread wears to 3/16' deep...'. Now, if that equates to 6/32", then arent they a bit premature in their recommendation? I mean, if most tires start life at about 10/32", they'd have you ditch them before they're half gone! Of course, if my figures are wrong, then forget all this.... _____________________ Paul Elliott '99 Alpine White M3 <25000 mi Forged M dbl-spokes; Rotex pads; Dinan Stage II Supercharger; Stygar Short Shift kit and Clutch Stop; Skaggs Pedals; X-brace; Sound by Kenwood Excelon, Polk, JL Audio
