I'm with Jim on this one. If it's so small that you can't find it with the water trick, seal it and forget it. Just don't forget to to tell the guy who swaps the tire that when you get new rubber. > 3. Some bozo is fooking with you by letting air out as a practical > joke. LOL -- This never even dawned on me. I had someone doing this to me with a bicycle once. I would lock my bike up in a shared storage space in my office building and one of my designers would come in after me and leak all of the air out of my rear tire. After I discovered what was going on (he did it three times), I showed him how a New Yorker responds -- I stripped his bike over lunch and left all of the little pieces in a pile next to his bolted-to-the-railing frame. ;-) -p

Ok, so that wasn't so bad the places he did it. Mine was at SP turn 11 - nothin' but wall in front of us. Scary mistake #2: Lifting in a fast turn (#8) _after_ he started picking up speed. There were four very large eyes in that car for a moment before he got back on the throttle. Very educational, tho - he didn't do it again. To be even more educational, I'll tell you that it was completely a matter of not trusting himself. He was on a beautiful line for the exit, but was having a lot of trouble with not tracking out. So to him, the beautiful line was too far out and he tried to pinch it back to his normal spot. I instructed at Roebling Road this past weekend with the First Coast Chapter's School. I went off track 3 times in one day with my student. We won't say why but they were all driver induced and we were never going that fast. My instructors have now been revenged. This was not fun. I think what Donna says is very important about thanking your instructors. We do get to go to the schools for free but it is a lot harder and frustrating than being a student. It is almost like having another job. Just imagine going to the track, driving your car around, then getting in a car with a student who thinks he knows more than you, ride with them around the track, and then do it over with another student. Do this all day and it is a lot of work. But we do enjoy it since it does pay off when we see the smiles on the students faces after they see what they have learned. We also like to get feedback from our students. So next time you go to the track, be sure to thank your instructor. The good parts: - He really wanted to learn, not just show off what his S4 could do. - He said, "You make it look so easy!" after riding in my car. <warm fuzzies> The bad parts: - Instructing is _work_!! I can't imagine having three different students for two days. Everyone, thank your CCA instructors _again_. - He scared me by making two of my top three stupidest mistakes. One of my instructors has been avenged. :) General observation: An S4, even on crappy tires, will forgive even more bizarre maneuvers than an M3 will. #5. Alignment Specs - from Bora Akyol

Date: Wed, 28 Feb 2001 20:36:37 -0800 From: Bora Akyol <akyol@akyol.org> Subject: Alignment Specs My car's alignment specs with the new suspension are as follows (with about 1/3 of a tank of gas): LF: RF Camber -1.3 degree -1.0 degree Caster 6.3 6.2 Toe 0.09 0.09 Total toe: 0.18 LR RR Camber: -1.6 -1.6 Toe 0.25 0.25 Total toe: 0.5 These are the Dinan recommended specs, give and take a bit (0.5+/-) My question is that Dinan recommends these with a full tank of gas and I am just under 1/2 tank. Does this make any difference? I guess that 10 gallons of gas should weigh about 80 lbs which is not significant considering the car's weight but I am still curious? Thanks Bora

#6. Throttle Body Recall - from Bora Akyol

Date: Wed, 28 Feb 2001 21:11:02 -0800 From: Bora Akyol <akyol@akyol.org> Subject: Throttle Body Recall Has anyone else seen this? It looks eerily similar to what happened to me today. Very very scary! I am calling BMW tomorrow to see if my car had the recall done, I am thinking not since my car has no clips whatsoever around the cables. Bora ------ Office of Defects Investigation Recall Database ------------------------------------------------------------------------ Call the Auto Safety Hotline toll free at (888) 327-4236 to report safety defects or to obtain information on cars, trucks, child seats, highway or traffic safety. ------------------------------------------------------------------------ Report Date: March 1, 2001 12:11:31 AM ------------------------------------------------------------------------ NHTSA CAMPAIGN ID Number: 97V131000 Component: FUEL:THROTTLE LINKAGES AND CONTROL Manufacturer: BAYERISCHE MOTOREN WERKE Mfg. Campaign #: 97V131000 Year: 1995 Make: BMW Model: M3 Potential Number of Units Affected: 410000 Manufactured From: MAR 1994 To: JUL 1997 Year of Recall: '97 Type of Report: Vehicle Summary: The cruise control and throttle cables are attached to the same throttle valve actuating lever at the throttle housing. It is possible that the plastic bushing on either cable could break due to environmental influences coupled with vibration. If the bushing breaks, the outer cable housing can separate from the bushing. In this case, during application of the throttle pedal without cruise control being engaged, the outer tube could catch on the edge of the broken bushing. This could cause the throttle valve to remain partially open. It his were to occur, the car might not decelerate as expected increasing the risk of a vehicle crash. Dealers will install a spring steel clip on the outer tube of each cable in the area of the adjusting screw and plastic bushing. The clip is designed to prevent the outer tube from dislodging from the bushing. Owner notification is expected to begin by the end of October 1997. Owners who take their vehicles to an authorized dealer on an agreed upon service date and do not receive the free remedy within a reasonable time should contact BMW at 1-800-831-1117. Also contact the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration's Auto Safety Hotline at 1-800-424-9393.
