If you use both at the same time, that's what's referred to as as left foot braking. Some autocross champions swear by it, some never use it, but all agree it's difficult to master. If you are braking with the right foot deep into the corner, then switching over to the gas, that's trail braking. How are you doing compared to other cars in your class? If you're kicking butt, keep doing what you're doing. If it's the other way around, maybe try something different. I use a little trail braking almost everywhere, but haven't mastered left foot braking. Both *can* make you faster. Probably the best answer is that the same technique won't necessarily be the best thing on every corner. Learning to read the course and feel the car are the keys. -- Ron Katona

I think the ozone breaks down the rubber. While true that ozone will degrade rubber, most household electric motors do not produce any ozone. The exceptions are motors with brushes - such as those used in electric drills, blenders, hand mixers and the like - whose usage is typically so low it doesn't matter. Induction motors or brushless DC motors used in furnaces, air conditioners, laundry equipment, and other domestic appliances are not ozone producers. However if you have a 24 by 7 Margarita production operation, store your tires away from the blender. Neil 96 M3

Date: Thu, 1 Feb 2001 08:32:43 -0800 From: "Mount, Mike" <JMMn@pge.com> Subject: more of the perennial track pad thread Hi Jeff, that's a good point about the stock Jurid pads. I do believe they are excellent, however I fell they do fall short for serious track duty. I've done several events with the stock setup, but the brakes do fade in the faster sessions. I noticed this at Buttonwillow, and my instructor recommended I go for some different pads after nearly sailing into the weeds. The brakes faded again at Laguna Seca, I bleed them Sunday am (ATE super blue) and discussed it with the chief driving instructor Billy Maher - he was my instuctor that day in B group. We worked on technique and that really helped a great deal, braking later but harder, squeeze on-ease off, etc. Braking technique is one area that I'll focus on at the Buttonwillow school (Mar 31-Apr 1), which IMHO is a fairly fast track but with zero elevation changes. And, as you noted that brake problems dont happen in low speed areas.... without being sarcastic, isn't this the antithesis of our intent? >> to go fast :-) What did the girfriend in 'Grand Prix' say, "speed is fabulous!" They have a nice controlled attack, are easy to modulate, but are a bit dusty (no big deal in my book). Somewhat unsolicited testimony can be given by long time listers; where are you Carlos? At last weekend's DEC conference, we found an unusually high number of serious incidents due some factor leading to catastrophic brake problems. Know your equipment, don't skimp on parts or preparation, and be mindful of the consequences. Brake problems don't happen in low speed areas where there is lots of runoff. --jeff ************************************************************* List Commands UNSUBSCRIBE - (in subject line) unsubscribes you from the mailing list. #10. dead battery this morning or to remember to shut off the fricking' dome light the night before. - from George M. Kofman

This morning I turn the key, and hear click-click-click. try again. same strange click-click-click. Okay. check power - radio & computer work fine. Okay, has to be the battery or the starter. Look for jumper cables. nada. zilch. Fine. Go down the block to my inlaws (yes, living 10 houses away has its' benefits) and get a set of jumper cables. make a mental note to buy jumper cables. pull the Volvo to the truck of the M3. Gotta love BMWs for this - keep the battery in the truck and a hookup under the hood. makes it EZ to jump. Turn the keys, starts right up. So I must have left the dome light on and it drained the battery enough to not be able to crank the starter. Question - the battery is 4 yrs old and still OEM original. Should I be looking for a new one ? GMK '97 M3 sedan (www.motorsports-exchange.com)
