#2. Korman Problems (Long) - from Bill Lackey
Top
Date: Thu, 08 Feb 2001 18:49:18 -0800 From: "Bill Lackey" <btlackey@hotmail.com> Subject: Korman Problems (Long) I recently bought a 95 M3 which I plan to track several times a year. As such, I bought an E36 Oil Cooler kit from Korman Autowerks. After speaking to Alan on the phone I confirmed it had additional oil sender locations for oil temperature and oil pressure which I need. A few weeks later the kit arrived, but was mis-shipped with a complete oil pan instead of the oil filter/distribution assembly. Korman had me ship the entire kit back to them on their dime. A few weeks later the kit arrived with the proper pieces, at least I assume so as Korman does not provide directions. The oil filter/distribution housing was not tapped for addition senders as Alan had stated, and I had asked for as well. I called Korman no less than four times requesting the directions be sent to me via fax. Each time they said no problem, but never sent the directions. Finally, fed up with their service, I threaten to send the kit back as it was not as advertised by Alan, or their website. This is when they explained to me that they do not have instructions for the kit, did not provide extra gauge sender locations, and would require a 25% restocking fee if I sent the unit back. The lack of instructions was only confirmed after I told them I was sending back the kit. I believe they would have continued to tell me they were going to fax them until I finally installed the kit without them and gave up. I am now faced with either a fight to return the product, or purchase additional hardware for my additional gauges, as well as muddling through the installation without instructions. I am mechanically inclined, so I am sure I can install the thing, but I should not have to guess with a product of this nature. Korman charges $1290 for this kit, and as far as I can tell ships the same kit as the BMW Euro Oil Cooler, which can be bought from any dealer for $1008. I can not see where they have added any value themselves to the kit. I chose Korman so I would have all the pieces for a very easy integration into the car. It appears they do not support the products they sell as I had hoped. I don't know your exact situation with Korman, but i will offer you some buyer's advice: Call your credit card company and charge it back. Tell the card company that they supplied a product that was not as advertised and they refuse to take a return. You have all of the power here -- you have the parts and you have ability to stop payment. -peterg

And its not cause M owners are fanatics about buying aftermarket solutions for everything...Its because our stock sound systems just plain suck...I dont know how else to say it....If anyone doubts it, simply try and replacing just one item, the head unit, with any decent aftermarket one...Sure, your reception will degrade with any but the Blaupunkt, which, like the BMW head unit, uses the IF circuit to control the diversity scanning module, but the sound of all your music will radically improve...And, the more pieces you replace, the better it gets....I read, I think it was in Roundel, that whereas in other cars, like the Maxima, the sound system is engineered into the interior of the car, but with ours, first the car is engineered, and then a sound system is fitted, as it should be for a performance car, and not the other way around, as it is with some makes. But, if the engineers are all so passionate about hifi, youd think theyd do a better job of it....I hear they did with the E46...I dont know...I had a 2001 325 loaner today, and I dont think it was much different....But with the non DIN shape of those new head units, I have no idea how youd go about replacing them! _____________________ Paul Elliott '99 Alpine White M3 <25000 mi Forged M dbl-spokes; Rotex pads; Dinan Stage II Supercharger; Stygar Short Shift kit and Clutch Stop; Skaggs Pedals; X-brace; Sound by Kenwood Excelon, Polk, JL Audio

To my knowledge all BMWs have had them since about '92 - my experience being with E36,E34, and E39s. If anyone wants to know why the Germans think they things are needed, it only takes one look at my M3 trunk lid to understand how big of a ding an excessively forceful finger (previous owner) can make in the middle of the trunk! I'm sure the Dent Wizard folks would love for BMW to do away with them. On a similar note, it seems that some people with winged M3s use the wing for a trunk closer. You might want to be even more careful with that handle. While it won't dent as easily, constant flexing of the paint will eventually cause it to crack. In addition to the non-DIN mounting head units, I have heard horror stories of E46 owners attempting upgrades only to have things like the windows roll down when they change stations or turn up the volume. I believe that BMW is now sending lots of control signals around the car on the power wiring (supposedly to save $$$ -but it's not so apparent when you examine the cost of the modules that send and receive these signals) that is easily corrupted. FWIW, I consider myself a long time audiophile but I must be a minority on this list with respect to my view of Car audio (based on others' comments). I have concluded that Car audio can never even approach a mid range home system (sure you can improve it and certainly make it louder) so I don't really bother with it. The acoustical environment of a car is just too much to overcome for a really good result. I just take the crap that BMW includes and live with it - if I get tired of it, I turn it off and listen to M - Music. I have no desire to start a flame war - just my opinion and others are certainly entitled to theirs. Tom Tice '98 M3/4 '99 540/6
