We could actually use a couple of people to test them (free test sets...). #4. > 1. Has anyone tried SMG? - from Scott Yu

I did however find a book titled "BMW M-Series: A Collector's Guide" by a British author, I think. It mentions some relevant and painful information for us E36ers, like all the specific upgrades that made the 321HP evo motor so much better and how unfortunate the American customers were (dangit!), but he also talks briefly about the SMG tranny and how it was rather slow at manual shifting, and choppy and imprecise when in the automatic mode. Worst of both worlds, apparently. As for the book, I'm not sure I could recommend it for the full retail price of $20.00, but at $4.99 on Borders closeout, it's a very good deal ;) Scott Yu Boston ISBN: 1899870458 > Date: Fri, 9 Feb 2001 00:07:35 -0500 > From: "PJB" <pbosco@hotmail.com> > Subject: Has anyone tried SMG? > > The SMG trans setup sounds like a really fun option to have on an M3 - I > haven't heard much about what it's like to drive with it...any experiences > out there? > > Pete > '95 M3

They call it the F1 transmission and it's available in the F355 and it's successor the 360 Modena. Anyway, it's pretty damned impressive. Very fast shifts. Listening to it blip the gas to match revs on a downshift is incredible. Would I buy it? Nope. Heel&toe downshifting is hard, and not everyone can do it. There's satisfaction is geting it right. Was I impressed? You betcha. It's very cool technology. I'm looking forward to test-driving an E46 M3 with SMG. - Mark > ---------- > From: Scott Yu > Reply To: Scott Yu > Sent: Friday, February 9, 2001 11:23 AM > To: E36M3 > Subject: [E36M3] > 1. #7. More exhaust... - from Scott King

Date: Fri, 09 Feb 2001 14:38:46 -0500 From: "Scott King" <vw8vgti@hotmail.com> Subject: More exhaust... Okay, with spring approaching, I'm getting ready to starting fiddling with the M. Does anyone have comparative feedback on the Borla and A&A exhaust systems? I have always heard that the Borla sounds great, but possibly possesses marginal flow characteristics. While I know a system is not going to yield significant hp gains, I do not want to take a step back either... I'm just looking for some audible improvements, and any hp gains are an added benefit. Anyone on the list have a Borla or have experience with one? I've heard from alot of A&A users and I'm trying to make an informed decision.
