Good evening, I found Bonneville Motor Werks site for pulling codes from my 95 M3 computer. Great site! For my misfire problem, I got a 1226 - Knock Sensor #2. Would this refer to a bad knock sensor, or just the fact that the knock sensor sensed knock? I also have a few "newbie" questions, I hope I'm not off base for this list. Factory Service Manual vs. Bentley - any comparison? Where is a good place to get mail order genuine BMW parts? I'm mainly looking for Service II parts, accessory belts, lift pads. Do the code readers do much more than reading the flashes off the engine light? TIA! No comparison - there isn't a Factory Manual readily available to the public. :-) Bentley is pretty good. Combine it with help from this list and a good, local, independent BMW repair shop and you have everything covered. >Where is a good place to get mail order genuine BMW >parts? Several places: Pacific BMW BMP Designs Bavarian Autosport Rocky Mountain Motorworks >Do the code readers do much more than reading the >flashes off the engine light? The code readers are useful for 96+ cars (OBD-II) - we can't use the "push the gas pedal 5 times" method. They read the code and reset the Check Engine light, as well as reset the Service Interval lights. Hope that helps, Jim Bassett 1998 M3/4

#5. Swapping strut hats from a 96 into a 95 M3 - from Bora Akyol

While doing that I am also planning on rear shock mounts as well as the strut hats. This has got me thinking however that I should get the 96+ strut hats and mount them on the wrong side. Since I am getting new struts anyway (full assembly) as well as new springs, I figure this strut hat swap will give me an extra 0.5 degree of camber and save me $200 bucks on what Mr. Dinan charges for camber plates. Does this sound like a good plan? Any comments, Bora

Date: Sun, 11 Feb 2001 01:33:52 EST From: LoweSeaton@aol.com Subject: Re: [E36M3] New Owner - PLEASE Help! Bob, You are doing good for a new owner! You already found Jim Conforti's web site and figured out how to read off the check engine codes. That is better than me and I have owned my M3 for 5 years. I have never been able to tap the gas pedal 5 times and get the silly error codes. Can you show me? I think your code indicates the knock sensor is bad. Probably means it won't retard the timing when the engine knocks. I would not panic. Just make sure you use premium gas and don't lug the engine. You can drive for weeks with a bad knock sensor. A friend of mine has the same problem and he has been driving his M3 everyday. He said the sensor costs about $80. I assume you could put it in yourself. As for service manuals? You don't have much chose. There isn't a BMW Factory Manual. Bentley is about as good as there is but I've heard it is not perfect. It will probably cover 90% of what you need to do. Much of what you will want to do has already been detailed. Check Suzy's BMW-M.net web site for tech procedures. Also check Ron Stygar's web site: http://www.eskimo.com/~dalus/bmw/bmw_ronstygar.html These two should get you almost everything you want. For parts - I recommend two places. 1) The Ultimate Garage - www.ultimategarage.com The Ultimate Garage is good for tools, oils, miscellaneous tune up items like spark plugs, filters, brake pads, etc. Steve D'G carries many of the BMW smaller parts. 2) Hendrick BMW - Charlotte, NC. (800) 476-8322 or www.hendrickbmw.com Are you a BMW CCA member? If not, join now. Hendrick offers 25% off list prices for BMW Car Club Members. I've purchased a complete set of polished forged wheels and some other large items from Hendrick. Excellent service. If you are looking for specific items like exhausts or track brake pads or sway bars, we often have group buys on this list. Several vendors even offer discounts to Suzy's list members. Just post what you need and I am sure somebody will give you the best source. Code readers? I guess you could get one if you wanted. Won't hurt. Peake probably makes the best one. I believe Jim Conforti had a hand in designing that one. I have one that I paid WAY too much for that resets the lights. I'd recommend getting a cheap one that lets you reset the oil lights at least. Those can be had for less than $50. Or if you are brave, you can supposedly reset the lights with a paper clip. Good luck and welcome! Enjoy your M3!! Lowell Seaton '95 M3 Dallas, Texas

How many sets did you buy? LOL However, I do see in their catalog I just got yesterday (#13) the price has dropped to $9.95. Still about $2 higher than every other mail order place but better. I like BMP for several reasons but low price is not one. They are exceedingly high priced and then I have to add Texas state tax and ridiculously high shipping charges to ship stuff 90 miles. BMP does offer several items that I don't think any other vendor has so I do have a few BMP items on my M3. Lowell Seaton '95 M3 Dallas, Texas

If you only want a modest 0.5 degree increase in negative camber. I considered this option myself but I had a fairly significant pull to one side. Turned out one wheel had 20 minutes less caster than the other. I decided to try the K-MAC adjustable camber/caster plates. I was able to completely stop the pulling by adjusting the caster. I like the K-Mac plates. So......If you just want to change the camber with no other adjustments and no future need for more negative camber, the BMW '96+ strut hats will work. But if you ever think you might want more negative camber or like me need to adjust the caster, I'd recommend adjustable plates like K-Mac. Lowell Seaton '95 M3 Dallas, Texas

I was a little apprehensive about buying a European car, but this list has eased my fears... somewhat. If some of you missed my original point, the reason I read the 1226 Knock Sensor #2 code is that my car has been misfiring at anything more than ~5% throttle, and runs very rough. It got worse and worse as I drove it. This started happening after the dealer did a pre-purchase inspection, which included a compression/leak down test. The dealership service department closed by the time I decided to go back and ask them to fix it. I want to get some background info before I talk to them on monday. I was wondering what they could have done to cause this, or if it's just bad luck. I noticed that there is a ground strap going from the #6 cylinder coil pack to the cylinder head. It doesn't look right to me, since it doesn't seem to accomplice anything, going from a stud on the head to another stud on the head. Am I missing something here? Or, would the stress on the plug wires when servicing could have weakened them? I really wish I could drive my "new" car, instead of work on it! It took me a few tries to get it right. First of all, do not wait for the check engine light to turn off. Immediately start pushing the gas pedal when you turn the key to the on position. Then, make sure you "quickly" push down fully and release fully. It took me a couple tries to find out what "quickly" means. I would guess my leg was going about 1.5 Hz :) Good luck!
