Duane buys hisself a Howdy and starts drinkin Car-owna beer. Does nothing ever stay the same? DC feels that the momento might not be fitting of his new lifestyle, so it's goin to list member Ted, who was the first classless enough to ask for it. He also claims to have consumed mass quantities of RR at PSU. I feel he's worthy. Ted, send me your address and dust off a fitting place of prominence for it overlooking the M3 in the garage. #3. Urethane Sway Bar Bushings - from LoweSeaton@aol.com

Date: Tue, 13 Feb 2001 22:01:22 EST From: LoweSeaton@aol.com Subject: Urethane Sway Bar Bushings Dave, Great find on the Energy Suspension bushings! I wish I had known about them 2 years ago. I bought the BMP urethane sway bar bushings to fit my stock M3 sway bars. But I paid $40 per pair ($80 total)! I like your $16 sway bar bushing much better. :-) I was someday going to post about my experience with the BMP urethane stock bushings. In short, I like them. I'm well pleased with them except for the price. I think BMP was the first vendor (and still the only one) to make urethane sway bar bushings for stock M3 sway bars. The stock front sway bar is 22.5 mm on '95 and 23 mm on '96+. And the rear sway bar is 19 mm on '95 and 20 mm on '96+. BMP makes them in 23 mm and 20 mm to fit the stock brackets. My theory is that the stock rubber sway bar bushings are very "squishy" and the stock sway bar is not very effective as a result. Your M3 has to rotate over quite a bit before the stock sway bars even begin to resist the rotation. I think you guys with aftermarket larger diameter sway bars are benefiting from the new urethane bushings more than the larger bar. I'll wager that I get 90+% of the improvement in roll stiffness compared to RD/UUC/Eibach sway bars with my stock M3 bars and BMP urethane bushings. Neil - I'm curious to hear your results of retrofitting soft rubber bushings on your larger RD sway bars. I think you will notice a lot more body roll. Please keep us posted. These BMP urethane bushings have slots in them to supposedly hold grease. I don't know how. They are clamped so tight in the bracket that all the grease is immediately squeezed out. I used all the grease I could anyway. They have been squeak free for over 1 year. They have survived temperatures of 111 degrees, 50+ days over 100, and now about 4 months and 30 inches of rain. They are still squeak free. I know the stock rubber bushings can squeak also so it's not restricted to urethane bushings. In fact, I think the rubber bushings should NOT be greased. They literally fuse onto the bar and turn/squish with the bar. I solved a squeak with my stock rubber bushings by removing all the grease and using dish washing liquid soap to lube them up enough to install. Once the dish soap dried or washed away, the rubber bushings are fused to the bar. I agree with Neil that the amount of grease in the bushing does not effect the bracket durability. The bars will turn. Lack of grease is not going to stop them. My BMP bushings with all the grease I could get in them won't turn. It takes a considerable amount of effort to rotate my bars by hand when the ends are disconnected. Always has from the 1st day I put them on. I think with 3,000 lbs acting on them, it doesn't make a difference. Dave, thanks again for the Energy Suspension source. Anybody thinking about buying larger sway bars, I'd highly recommend trying the Energy Suspension bushings first. I see they make a 23 mm size to fit the front. For $16 it can't hurt! Too bad they don't make a rear bushing yet. And I'll recommend the BMP urethane bushings. More expensive at $80 for all four front/rear but they do come in a neat red color. ;-) Lowell Seaton '95 M3 Dallas, Texas

It's not something that you'll notice on the street, but you can notice the difference during hard driving at driver's schools. When I took my car for tech inspection prior to a school last June, the mechanic called the other mechanics to "check out cool tranny mounts". They were impressed... I took some pictures during the install process, and I was going to write up the procedure, but I haven't gotten around to it yet. -rb >Date: Tue, 13 Feb 2001 17:47:13 -0800 (PST) >From: Daniel <m3_driver@yahoo.com> >Subject: UUC Transmission Mount Enforcers > >Anybody use these?...it sure looks like a very >inexpensive upgrade for $70.00 ($35.00 for the bushing >and $35.00 for the Enforcement caps) > >Looks like plug and play too from the install instructions _________________________________________________________________ Get your FREE download of MSN Explorer at http://explorer.msn.com

#7. Rubber vs. Urethane Sway Bar Bushings - from LoweSeaton@aol.com

Date: Wed, 14 Feb 2001 01:56:27 EST From: LoweSeaton@aol.com Subject: Rubber vs. Urethane Sway Bar Bushings Neil writes: > Emphasis on the "little bit." Neil - I think a little bit is a lot. You are dealing with a lever arm. I crawled under my M3 and tried to measure the dimensions. Best I could do without raising the M for the front was: centerline to bushing bracket = 13 inches bracket to end of sway bar = 9 inches You are dealing with similar triangles. Lets say the rubber bushing squishes 1/4" pretty easily. Therefore, the end of the bar moves: X / (9" + 13") = 1/4" / 13" Solve for X and you get 0.42" This is for just one side. However, one bushing squishes up 1/4" and the other squishes down 1/4" so the total delta for the ends of the front sway bar is 2 times 0.42" = 0.84" Say 1 inch. This means that one wheel can move 1 inch up or down compared to the other wheel with little resistance. The front wheel track is 56 inches according to my M3 brochure. Therefore: tan X = 1 / 56 Solve for X and you get 1 degree. Basically your M3 will rotate 1 degree. You give up 1 degree of your front suspension camber. Right? Keep us posted. I'm curious to know how much more you think your M3 rolls in corners. Good luck! Lowell Seaton '95 M3 Dallas, Texas

(i suppose that would have made a mess if the airbag went off, but whatever ;-) my S4 has the "better" 3 spoke wheel. the same perfect 9 and 3 position, but now i can't put my hand at 6 o-clock. and i can't rest a soda cut there either. now... the S4 has a handy cop holder so this isn't as big a problem as it could have been but still... why is having that damn spoke right at 6 o-clock a GOOD thing? when bmw has come up with the perfect compromise with it's ingenious "4 spokes to allow a 6 o-clock hand position" design? _________________________________________________________________ Get your FREE download of MSN Explorer at http://explorer.msn.com

I solved by differential switch illumination problem by painstakingly >replacing the bulb with an LED and resistor from an old sunroof switch...I >still haven't told my therapist about this. wow... this may beat my anal story... i want you other list members to judge for me... my "other car" is an S4. it has red dash/console illumination. this illumination is an EXACT match for the valentine 1 radar detector. so i dumped my perfectly good radar detector to get a valentine 1 for the S4. just so the lights would match. (no this is not the anal part) so... after installing the detector, i noticed that the "audodimming" feature of the V1 allowed the LEDs to dim slightly more then the autodimming of the S4 dash did when it got dark. after trying to live with this for a week i broke down. i disassembled the radar detector, located the light sensor, and set about trying to modify it so it would dim the same amount as the S4's dash. i discovered that putting resistors in parallel with the light sensor would limit the dimming. so i spent about a week soldering resistors to the detector and trying them out. much to my dismay it takes hundres of MEG ohms to get the peoper dimming. anyone tried to find a 200 meg ohm resistor lately? it took me a MONTH of calling all over the WORLD to find an electrical supplier that could get me resistors that large, and i had to buy $100 worth of them just to get them to ship me anything. but, of course, this was no problem, (becaue of the sickness) so now i am the proud owner of about twenty, 200 meg ohm resistors if anyone ever wants to do this for themselves. so... $100, two months of effort, and 30 times of taking the detector apart and putting it back together. just to get the auto dimming to match. do i win the anal award? ;-) _________________________________________________________________ Get your FREE download of MSN Explorer at http://explorer.msn.com
