(The exact figure was above 8K.) Hopefully this news will make you feel better...but be careful! Bob ///M3

#2. lug bolt torque specs - from Shelhart2@aol.com

Date: Sat, 17 Feb 2001 15:47:25 EST From: Shelhart2@aol.com Subject: lug bolt torque specs i put a set of aftermarket momo sport rims on and can't get that fine vibration out. i had the hunter balancer on it and they are balanced. i thought that 80 ft lbs of torque was the max on the stock contour rims. I can't find the lug torque specs in the bentley manual and thought that if i torqued them down a bit more (80-85 ft lbs) i could eliminate the slight vibration. any suggestions? shel hart 98 m3/2 techno violet

In Sept 99 I was instructing for another Car Club's Autocross School here in New England. The course was laid out with a high speed slalom where you almost hit the rev limiter in third before coming down hard on the brakes....Late in the morning I was able to take some fun runs and went to upshift from 2nd into 3rd with the suspension fully loaded entering the long high speed slalom....OOOOPS .....revs seeeeemed high...pushed the clutch down a split second after initial sensation....uhoh.....I had shifted into 1st........My gut was up in my throat....what a horrible feeling that was.....Would'nt wish it on anyone! I coasted off the runway and popped the hood and listened to the idle.....IT WAS FINE.... Drove the car thru the lower gears and shifted at low RPMS still seemed fine.....No valve noise, no lumpy idle, no vibration at all..... Ok, what was the recorded overrev you ask? 7552! Car has been flawless ever since....and it's been 30+K since the overev....... It's funny how I hear about folks over reving on downshifts....if you backhand all your downshifts its near impossible to miss a gear....but the 2-3 still scares me.... I've fixed it with the UUC tranny mounts. Shifter now goes into 3rd the way it always should have....But I still take my time on that upshift :-) Hope this makes you feel better..... If you want to make sure get a compression test done....I doubt anything is wrong.... #4. Schroth Harness Install help - from jeff stowe

Date: Sat, 17 Feb 2001 13:43:05 -0800 From: jeff stowe <jrstowe@pacbell.net> Subject: Schroth Harness Install help I am attempting to install my Schroth Ralleye 3 harnesses and am hoping to get some insights from others. The application is a 98 M3 4 door with motorized seats. I want to retain the stock belts for non-track use. The documentation which came with the harnesses is pathetic at best and does not even seem to address e36 M3 applications. Can someone please comment on the following questions or point me to a good write up. 1) I went with the ralleye 3 on the advice from HMS motorsports. It seems the ralleye 4, with two tailstrap mounting locations may be a better solution. Does anyone have any pertinent insights on this issue? Should I just keep the ralleye 3s or is there a material advantage to the Ralleye 4 setup? 2) assuming I keep the ralleye 3 solution, should the tail straps be mounted to the rear outboard seat belt mount or the rear inboard seat belt mount? 3) The instructions for installing the front belts reference the seat "pre-tensioner". Since I have motorized seats do I have a pre-tensioner. 4) Do I need to remove the front seats to install the new harnesses? Has anyone installed these on motorized seats without removing the seats? Due to the nature and purpose of these harnesses I really want to do this right (or why bother) so any insights are greatly appreciated. thanks, jeff

A compression and leakdown test should reveal whether you have bent any valves or not. I expect that may cost you a couple of hundred bucks at the dealer. FYI when I had Josh at Eurosport flash my ECU, he said it was one of the few he sees that did NOT show any past over-revs. Which probably says something about us as a group <g> But for you it also means that many M3s get over-revved without apparent damage. Let's hope yours turns out to be one of them. Neil 96 M3

Its a good test to do but here's my suggestion. Compression test cold and hot. Any differences? Leakdown test cold and hot. Any differences? Of course badly bent valves (usually the exhaust side) will let air (use a compressor and the compression tester) whistle out the tailpipe.
