He was one of my favourite drivers. Wow. Your post was the first I heard of it... I was hoping it was a bad joke until I checked out NASCAR.com. I was so impressed with Dale's showing at the 24 hours of Daytona. His driving was superb as was his attitude of being there to learn how to compete in a 24 hour road race. It really put him in a different light for me and I was looking forward to seeing him do more events like that. NASCAR fan or not, he was one of the great figures in American racing. Very sad indeed. -- Ron Katona

I am planning on attending the Monterey historic races as well as the Pebble beach concours and other events in that general area during August of this year. As I have never been to that area could someone recommend some lodging that would be within a reasonable distance of all of those events? I don't need primo accommodations. Just some place nice to sleep, store my stuff and my mountain bike during the day while I am off checking out the races, the cars, and the people. I don't mind being 30 minutes away from the action if it does mean a drop in price for what I am assuming might be a little pricey for this area and event. No, unfortunately I won't be bringing the M3 along as I will be transporting 2 mountain bikes and then continuing on up the coast into Canada. Thanks for your help, Marc Edwards 1995 M3 LTW

The slip ring is lubricated with a copper-colored, probably conductive grease. You may be able to get some more grease in there after removing the top and bottom steering column covers -- or maybe just the bottom one. There's a spring-loaded contact that presses against the slip ring, and that's usually where the squeaking occurs. -- ______________________________________ Andrew E. Kalman, Ph.D. aek@pumpkininc.com

If you don't mind a 30 minute drive, I would recommend motels in Salinas. If you can get your hands on a AAA Tour book, that would be a very good way to pick something out. #7. Help Needed!!! - from Roman

Date: Sun, 18 Feb 2001 21:43:51 -0800 From: Roman <roman@arteuro.com> Subject: Help Needed!!! Hi All, I had an episode today where my car would not start 200 miles away from home. AAA came and gave me a jump start and all was ok. Later the AAA guy and I saw that the battery in my M3 was not taking a charge. He gave me a second jump and my girlfriend and I were underway with alternator power. As it got dark I started turning on the lights. First with the parking lights. As soon as I turned on the main beams, the lights on the dash came on and the engine seemed to stall. Since I was traveling about 70mph and in gear, I was not expecting the reaction. I did not put the car in neutral either. All went back to normal but when I gave gas, the car was accelerating really badly and even jerky. I pressed the "check" button on the computer and it said that everything is OK. I called all over the place while underway to see who had a battery but all the auto stores were closed. We limped home and I checked the battery again for water and hooked up girlfriends car to jump start. The battery would absolutely not take a charge. I could not start the car but I checked the computer again and it said all is OK. I'm really freaked out that the car drove the way it did. Could I have hurt something when I turned on the lights and the car seamed to stall? Anyone had a similar experience. Roman S. 96 ///M3

Top
Date: Mon, 19 Feb 2001 01:20:22 EST From: LoweSeaton@aol.com Subject: Re: [E36M3] Help Needed!!! No, a car will not run on the alternator alone. I didn't know until a few years ago myself. Your battery has to maintain a charge for at least a split second. Your engine's electronics need DC power. The alternator puts out AC power. Your engine won't run on AC. In fact, if your battery's voltage drops below a certain voltage of about 11.9 VDC, you engine will die in motion. Roman, sounds like your battery dipped below this minimum voltage for a second when you turned on the high beams. I had a similar experience in another car of mine. It died in motion. I called a tow truck to jump me but by the time the tow truck arrived, my car started fine on its own! The battery had rebounded. I drove another 4 miles and the car died again! I called a second tow truck and had the damn car towed 7 miles home. Very expensive drive. And the next day the damn car started fine again! Was I ever angry. Buy a new battery ASAP. Sounds like all you need. I assume it is the original. You got good usage out of it if it lasted 4+ years. I recommend going to the dealer and buying the BMW battery. It fits best. I know some other guys have bought other batteries. But I did not think the price difference was that great. I paid $115 with BMW CCA discount. Cheapest I could find was $80 aftermarket. Not worth $35 to me. Lowell Seaton '95 M3

What you described sounds like your alternator has gone / is going bad, and the battery is suffering as a result. Be sure to have the alternator checked out, AND be careful about connecting a new, known good alternator to a totally-dead battery. If the alternator needs to be replaced, it might be a good time for a new battery, too. I had something similar happen to me with my E12 530i -- basically, as night fell, the car got weaker and weaker, and then died a few miles later in stop-and-go traffic after I turned on the lights. Turns out my alternator needed to be replaced, and of course the poor battery bore the brunt of it. Since an E36M3 uses much more electrical power than my 530i, it's likely to discharge the battery a lot faster ... Note that you might also have a (the) belt slipping, or something like that ... -- ______________________________________ Andrew E. Kalman, Ph.D. aek@pumpkininc.com
