I have to disagree with Sean's statement that a car helmet would be safe for motorcycle riding. One of the notable differences between the two types is the size of the helmet - the motorcycle helmets run down a little below your jaw, and car helmets (those that I've seen) extend somewhat lower. It's hard enough to turn your head to turn your head to look around with a motorcycle helmet, and I can only imagine it would be harder with a bigger helmet. I also recommend Arai helmets for motorcycling - they fit my head like a glove, and, like Rich, I had the unfortunate opportunity to test them out. They work! You can buy a plain white Arai Quantum/e for ~$320 or so. At that price, buy one for each application. It's your head! -Chris > From: "Sean Hester" <seanh_race@hotmail.com> < snip > > so... to "as safe as possible" it would be better > to have one for each use. > second choice would be to buy one of the car ones > (for the fire > protection) and double it for motorcycle use. last > choice is to use a > motorcycle helmet for car racing. Date: Tue, 20 Feb 2001 08:53:55 -0800 From: "Mount, Mike" <JMMn@pge.com> Subject: RE: [E36M3] Insurance for Driving Schools Sean, I think you may want to consider this information regarding coverage... If your agent tells you that you are covered; you are (in California anyway) covered. There is no 'out.' As for your knowledge of the person whose claim was not paid, I would consider the facts of that carefully. Insurance agents are agents for the company.... not for you. If they can avoid paying a claim, you can bet that is what they will do. It is about money, and they will use any and every loophole to avoid giving you $40k for your M3 that you put into a wall at Laguna Seca's turn 9. That too is one reason why the BMW CCA is so adamant about not allowing anything that remotely resembles racing (lap timing, places, etc). My ex- is an attorney who specializes in insurance cases, and her opinion is that an agents statement is a legally binding agreement between you and the company he/she represents. They are acting as the agent for the company, that is why they are licensed by the state agencies. If I were being jacked around by my insurance company, I would call my agent and tell them to deal with my attorney. (and I would find the biggest, baddest s.o.b. in the area) My .02 cents worth. The RA-1s don't need a particular amount of camber, ala the old G-Forces. I run my RA-1s with -2.5 degrees in front and -1.7 in the rear. Just keep an eye on the wear, and rotate F<->R when necessary. Hope that helps, Jim Bassett 1998 M3/4

As one data point, while I drove with two other M3s down to Ofest last year, all three of us consumed the same amount of fuel. When we pulled into a gas station, the pump stopped on the exact same gallon (well, Stephen probably needed $.50 more since he drives like a maniac). Perhaps our OBC are being a bit optimistic, but I easily saw 29 mpg. Jim E. experimented by not running his AC compressor and he saw 31mpg (we were bored and talking via 2 way radios). I then shut my AC off (tough to do in the Southern area) and saw my fuel economy improve as well. I guess it also depends on if you guys drive with the windows down, sun roof open or even tilted up. I've read at least once that driving with windows open uses more gas than with windows closed and the AC on. Haven't experimented with it since I like driving with windows open, no AC. Andrej '97 M3

I shipped my wife's car from Walnut Creek to Philly for around $750. There was a broad range in cost, from $750 up to about $1,500, as I recall. It varies according to open or enclosed transportation, of course, but also large differences just company-to-company. Martin Bullen '95 M3 (bought in PA) '97 Z3 2.8 (drove it across country. If y'all go to the JC Whitney web site you can buy the latest electrostatic, magetic fuel atomizer developed at Area 51 and hidden from the public for the last 50 years. Install by velcroing near the intake manifold and you should start getting well over 100 mpg and significantly increase horsepower and torque. ;-) ===== __________________________________________________ Do You Yahoo!?
