Wheel Techniques charged me $200 to repair a bent wheel on my 993 and $200 to fix curb rash on my M3 Alpinas. The curb rash fix wasn't even that good...it took them 5 days longer than they told me it would and there were paint drip marks on the wheel. This was after they quoted me $125 over the phone. My next visit will be Wheels America, although I heard good things about Pacific Wheel(sp?) in Oakland. Winchester Blvd. (1-877-WheelTec). They charge a flat $200 to straighten a rim. The other one is Wheels America, located at 33446 Western Avenue, Union City (1-888-4FIX RIM). Their price is $99 per wheel. I have had 4 wheels remanufactured by the latter, and they came out perfect! __________________________________________________ Do You Yahoo!? Date: Tue, 20 Feb 2001 14:26:41 -0800 From: Kit Wetzler <kitwetzler@mindspring.com> Subject: G-forces > The RA-1s don't need a particular amount of camber, ala the old G-Forces. From what I understand, the old G-force works fine in limited camber applications... the G-force R1A needs lots of camber. (I run -3 in the front and -1.5 in the rear) I wonder if I need more camber in the rear. I feel like my car doesn't power out of turns as well as I'd like it too... What do you guys run in the rear? aiya. I can't seem to figure out the bonking in the rear of the car. :( dammit. I got new bushings for my GC rear shock mounts and the car still makes noise. I wonder if something is broken back there, like the sub frame mounts or the shock towers? Installed the Ground Control shifter reinforcement... best $29 mod for the M3! (and for other similar level equipped cars) Shifts feel much more positive, with less moosh and more *snick* Kind of a pain to put on, and it's a damn good thing they include a couple of allen wrenches. -kit

Date: Tue, 20 Feb 2001 15:00:53 -0800 From: "david tow" <david_tow@hotmail.com> Subject: Check on Engine Over-Revving I am a relatively newbie on the digest, and missed this info about checking max rpm method. Does this method apply to the 95 M3s? I've never over-revved mine, but could I use this method to check and see if my previous owner over-revved it before? What do you see after you hold the odometer reset button down for ten seconds and turn the key to position 2 on your ignition? Curious mind wants to know. Thanks a lot! David ----------------------- Date: Sat, 17 Feb 2001 03:29:20 -0600 From: "eugene han" <gene501@hotmail.com> Subject: Engine Over-Rev woes... Missed a shift today and did the 'hold the odomenter reset button down for ten seconds & then turn the key to position 2' test today. It shows that my max rpms hit 7504. I know the m3 engine is good, but I've read many a discussion on how it doesn't handle over revs very well. It would make my day if someone else has inadvertantly revved their engine to this degree & have had no ill effects to show for it. Praying for it to be OK in Dallas, Eugene Han '97 M3/2 Alpine White. _________________________________________________________________ Get your FREE download of MSN Explorer at http://explorer.msn.com

Date: Tue, 20 Feb 2001 15:20:37 -0800 (PST) From: Lisa Ferrari <lisavferrari@yahoo.com> Subject: Historics reservations - make them now! Hi Mark, Prices in Monterey and the surrounding areas will definitely increase during events like the Historics but you should check out one of the room finding services (I've used www.monterey-reservations.com <http://www.monterey-reservations.com/> ) to get an idea of what is available, where and $$$. The sooner you make your reservations the better - it is definitely not too early to make reservations for this event. You can also check the Golden Gate Chapter website http://www.ggc-bmw-cca.org <http://www.ggc-bmw-cca.org/> in the upcoming months for more information and www.laguna-seca.com <http://www.laguna-seca.com/> will also have information about the Historics. A personal favorite (gee I wonder why) is Concorso Italiano held at Quail Lodge www.concorso.com <http://www.concorso.com> - enjoy! Lisa Ferrari Membership Chair BMWCCA - Golden Gate Chapter I am planning on attending the Monterey historic races as well as the Pebble beach concours and other events in that general area during August of this year. As I have never been to that area could someone recommend some lodging that would be within a reasonable distance of all of those events? Marc Edwards 1995 M3 LTW _____ Do You Yahoo!? Yahoo! Date: Tue, 20 Feb 2001 19:00:51 EST From: LoweSeaton@aol.com Subject: Re: [E36M3] berfore you buy a battery for your BMW Daanesh, There was a problem with your URL for Douglas Battery. Try this one: http://www.douglasbattery.com/pages/frame.html It is interesting but I don't know how much good it will do. I tried buying a Douglas Battery when mine died 1.5 years ago. Douglas did not sell retail back then. Looks like they just manufacture batteries to spec for mass retailers. It is interesting if you go to their "Product Specifactions" for automotive batteries. It is a little tricky to get to it. Go to the Home Page and click on Products, then Douglas Battery Automotive, then Product Specifications. Note that even Douglas does NOT list a group 92 battery for the M3. They go 48/91 then 49/93. I guess the only place to get a group 92 battery is from the BMW dealer. Also note I think there are differences between a 48 battery and a 91 battery. A 48 or 49 battery has the terminals ABOVE the top of the battery. But a 91, 92, or 93 has the terminals FLUSH with the top of the battery. I think. You guys with 48 or 49 series batteries please report. I'll double check my BMW 92 series battery tonight to confirm the terminals are flush. I still say a group 92 battery fits best. Apparently nobody sells a group 92 battery for retail. Why on earth did BMW choose their own unique battery? Lowell Seaton '95 M3

Date: Tue, 20 Feb 2001 19:20:48 -0500 From: nabli@attglobal.net Subject: E46 M3 parts comparison I don't know if this has been discussed but here is some general info about certain parts etc. This is more of an FYI post. Sway bars: Front = 26 Rear 21.5 The U.S. and Euro suspensions seem to be identical. That was also the same case with the E36 M3s. Wheels: For those of dying to get the 18s - the 18x8 with a 47mm offset is # 36 11 2 229 950 and the 18x9 with a 26 mm offset is # 36 11 2 229 960. Brakes: The Euro floating rotors for the M3 are # 34 11 2 282 302/301 (R/L). The rears seem to euro specific too: 34 21 2 282 304/303. The rest of the brake system seems to be identical. The front and rear calipers both seem to be a single piston design. Textar pads for Europe and Jurid for the U.S. Checkered Flags: MY FAVORITE! Are available as in the old setup of Left front and Right rear. LF - blau/violet and RR - violett/rot. 51 14 8 014 542/543 Front/Rear Center armrests are available. Not sure if the early models are coming through with them. There are many many Individual colors available - if you have the cash. CHeers, Jim E.

Only the dealer has the equipment to extract this info. Unless that new Peake Reset tool can read the max rev? Anybody know? But now I am getting a little confused. I think only the OBD-II engines store the max rev figure? Right? Therefore '95 M3's don't have that unwelcome memory. Lowell Seaton '95 M3 Dallas, Texas

#9. MORE E46 M3 parts and feature comparisons - from nabli@attglobal.net
Top
Date: Tue, 20 Feb 2001 19:50:02 -0500 From: nabli@attglobal.net Subject: MORE E46 M3 parts and feature comparisons INTRODUCTION The new E46 M3 will replace the E36 M3. In contrast to its predecessor, the high engine performance and dynamic driving characteristics is expressed more vividly in it's sports-oriented design features. The E46 M3 is a new high performance coupe based on the E46/2 body. TECHNICAL DATA - E46 M3 Vehicle dimensions The overall length of the E46 M3 measures 4 mm longer than the E46 coupe. Compared to the E46/2 production vehicle, the track width on the front and rear axle on the E46 M3 have been increased considerably (track width: front axle +37 mm, rear axle +47 mm). The new wider side panels enhance the sports character of the E46 M3. E46 M3 Body Overview The increase in engine output, torque and the sports-oriented design of the dynamic driving characteristics of the E46/M3 place more demanding requirements on the individual components in the body. In order to satisfy all these requirements many technical features of the E46 M3 body have been modified, visually as well as functionally. The visual differences of the E46 M3 compared to a production vehicle E46/2, in the body area include the widening of the front and rear side panels, a modified aluminum bonnet as well as newly designed front and rear bumper covers. In comparison to a production E46/2, the M3 requires an increase in structural rigidity. The increased rigidity in the body is achieved by the use of additional gusset plates and weld points. Both functional and technical modifications have been made to the side frame, front and rear wheel arches, reinforcement in the area of the C-pillar as well as the luggage compartment floor. The body of the E46 M3 corresponds to that of the E46/2 but with the following changes: -- Floor assembly/luggage compartment floor -- Side frame/wheel arches- Front/rear side panels -- Bonnet/fuel filler flap -- Front bumper -- Rear bumper -- C-pillar reinforcement -- Spring strut tower -- Rear axle mounts. -- The M-mobility system is housed in a foam molding, located in the newly designed spare wheel well. E46 M3 Body/car trim and changes compared to E46/2 The interior trim and upholstery of the E46 M3 corresponds to that of the E46/2 but with the following changes: -- M emblems, M trim fittings -- Inside and outside mirrors (M mirror) -- Interior trim panels and finishers -- Colors, materials of interior trim and upholstery -- Front seats (M sports seat) -- Rear seats E46 M3 Sports seats: The M3 comes standard with sport seats. For market-specific reasons, the seat in the US version features mechanical adjustment and electrical adjustment is available only as an option. For the first time a variable side support is offered as an optional extra. Variable side support consists of air cushions installed in the left and right side upholstery can be inflated or deflated to adapt to the body shape of the driver. E46 M3 General M equipment: Aero outside mirror The design of the outside mirror on the M3 is similar to that of the M5. The function of the E46 M3 is based on the principle of the E39 M5 mirror. The control is the same as on the E46/2. S54B32 ENGINE The E46 M3 is equipped with a new in-line 6-cylinder 3246 cc engine (S54B32) which will be used worldwide for all country variants. The engine management system MS S54 has adopted its basic functions from the MS S52 of the M5. The in-line 6-cylinder engine of the E46 M3 has the designation S54B32. Two overhead camshafts control 4 valves per cylinder in a one-piece aluminum cylinder head. The maximum engine speed is 8000 rpm. MS S54 Engine Management The MS S54 electronic control is used on the S54B32 engine in the E46 M3. The control unit is manufactured by Siemens and the design and the functionality are the same as those of the MS S52 in the E39 M5. The control unit is a 1-PC Board module. The control unit features two 32-bit microcontrollers. The main features are: -- Modular plug connector structure (5 module connectors) -- Engine torque calculation -- Electronic throttle control (EDR) -- Electronically controlled double VANOS -- Integral adaptive knock control (3 knock sensors) -- Smooth running control (correction of idle injection timing with forced exhaust gas adaptation) -- Secondary air injection system -- Stereo lambda (emission) control by means of monitor sensors -- Mixture adaptation, idle speed and partial load -- Fully sequential cylinder-individual injection -- 1 hot-film air mass meter -- Self-diagnosis and EDR emergency running (limp-home) programs -- Different pedal position sensor characteristics (sports switch) -- Variable engine speed warning zone E46 M3 Fuel supply system The fuel supply system of the new M3 corresponds to that of the E46/2. The most important changes are: -- 5 bar system pressure -- Pressure regulator on fuel filter -- Quick-release couplings in fuel supply line (same as E39 M5) -- Modified fuel baffle mount for the delivery unit of the right-hand side of the fuel tank (securing fuel supply while cornering) E46 M3 Running gear and suspension E46 M3 Manual transmission The manual gearbox of the E46 M3 is the Getrag G-gearbox. The maximum peak temperatures of the lifetime transmission oil in the gearbox are reduced by the specifically designed air flow along the underbody and special air inlets in the gearbox trim. The oil filling capacity is 1.9 liter and must be changed during the 1200 mile inspection. The gearbox then has a lifetime filling. E46 M3 Rear axle differential - Variable M-differential lock A variable differential lock is used, for the first time in the E46 M3. Compared to the conventional torque-sensing differential lock, the variable M-differential lock is capable of providing traction advantages even under conditions with greatly differing grip of the drive wheels. When there is a speed differential between both wheels, a shear pump located on the crown gear side generates a pressure. A working piston transmits this pressure controlled on the basis of the differential speed of the drive wheels to the multi-disc clutches. The drive torque is then transmitted to the wheel with the most effective grip. The pump pressure increases as the speed difference between the two wheels increases. The pump unit is sealed (not serviceable) and is filled with 46 grams of high viscosity silicon oil. Front / Rear Axle and Suspension Technical data of the E46 M3 front axle: Type: Single-joint spring strut front axle Components Front axle Suspension M-tuning Type Spring rate increased Height setting 605 mm (normal position) Damping Twin-tube gas pressure damper Auxiliary springs Two-piece Stabilizer bar 26 mm Steering Rack and pinion steering Steering pump 11 l/min - 120 bar delivery capacity Turning circle diameter 11.0 meters Track circle diameter 10.6 meters Track width 1508 mm Total toe 16' +/-7' Camber 1ª +/-20' Steering roll radius + 8.1 mm Caster angle 8ª 17' Toe difference angle 1ª 36' Rear axle Technical data of E46 M3 rear axle: Type: Central-link rear axle Components Rear axle Suspension M-tuning Type Spring rate increased (progressive barrel spring) Height setting 587 mm Damping Twin-tube gas pressure damper Stabilizer bar 21.5 mm Track width 1525 mm E46 M3 Front axle and steering The front axle of the E46 M3 is designed as a single-joint spring strut front axle. The development objective of BMW M was to once again increase the steering and handling precision compared to production vehicles. Design The special feature of the E46 M3 front axle is the rigid link of the running gear components to the body. The components are: -- Front axle mount (M3 new development) -- Aluminum control arm frame (M3 new development) -- Aluminum thrust zone (M3 new development) -- Modified elasto-kinematics (rubber mounts and joints) -- Larger track width (1508 mm) -- Stabilizer bar (M3 new development) -- Steering (track rod length changed) -- Steering knuckle (M3 new development) -- Wheel bearing (adapted to dynamic requirements) -- Front axle carrier (E46 Coupe). E46 M3 Tires and rims The 18" high performance tires were specially developed for the E46 M3 (Michelin Pilot Sport, Continental Sport Contact M3,Dunlop SP 9000). Size: 225/45ZR18 on the front axle and 255/40ZR18 on the rear axle. M-mobility system with RDW The tire pressure warning system (RDW) is integrated in the dynamic stability control (DSC). It triggers a warning at a pressure loss of approximately 50%. E46 M3 Dynamic stability control Installation of the Teves MK 20 El dynamic stability control system known from the E46 production vehicle. E46 M3 Vehicle electrical, electronic systems The vehicle electrical system of the new M3 is carried over from the E46/2 production vehicle. Cheers, Jim E.
