#2. suspect wheels on eBay - from Jonathan Evans

Date: Wed, 21 Feb 2001 10:52:33 -0500 From: "Jonathan Evans" <jonathanevans@hotmail.com> Subject: suspect wheels on eBay Does anyone think that these pictures are swapped for the replica and the "OEM" wheels? Those replicas look EXACTLY like my stock 95 LTW ones. Too bad they're only 7.5 inches wide in the rear. http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/aw-cgi/ebayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=562045908& r=0&t=0 Those below are definitely the aftermarket replicas, although they do say TUV approved. I met the guy at the local thewheelexchange.com and he was very picky about what he sold. There was a E46 M3 replica wheel that said TUV, made in Italy, but he found stamped in Taiwan on it. He said he sent them all back. Anywho, no affiliation, yadd yadda. Just looking for CHEAP track wheels. I don't even care if they match styles as long as they don't handle drastically different than my street wheels. Would it help to have 8.5 all around for tire rotation? http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/aw-cgi/ebayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=560486170& r=0&t=0 Jonathan Evans 95 M3

If more come, then I'm out. Jonathan, set the ratchet down and step back from the car you are currently working on. Seriously though, a lot of people vent on this list, some merited, some not so. Needless to say, you need to take this in stride. There are people on this list that have been ripped off by various dealerships across the country. There are also people who have treated very well by dealerships and independents. I am sure you or one of your coworkers have complained about a particular customer(s) before. I happen to have the good fortune of living in Cleveland where a one Brett Anderson also resides so I do not have these problems. Matter of fact, he is currently assisting me with getting a helicoil inserted into my oil filter housing where the oil distribution block bolts on. I plan to pay him for tool rental and his technical services (if I don't cave in and have him do the work) and it will be more than worth it to me compared to having to have my car towed to a dealership/independent and them perform the procedure for me. Speaking of Brett's technical services and tool rental (http://www.koalamotorsport.com/ and better seen on this page http://www.koalamotorsport.com/store/tech.htm and this page http://www.koalamotorsport.com/store/toolrent.htm since it is not mentioned on his front page), he is the one that suggested putting a helicoil into my oil filter housing (rather than spending $450 on a new one) resulting in a stronger thread than the aluminum threads in the housing so his technical services are typically supplemented with better ideas and/or ones that will save you money, more than offsetting the cost of paying for his services. By the way, does anyone know of a longer 12mm od banjo bolt, maybe an additional 0.5 mm in length than the one included with my JTD oil distribution block. I noticed the one that is included with the ODB probably only mates four to five threads into the housing where the stock oil pressure idiot light mounts when there are probably about twelve turns available. Date: Wed, 21 Feb 2001 11:01:20 -0500 From: "Scott Yu" <scott@ditherdog.com> Subject: belt changes and stoptech brake kit there's a great writeup at http://members.nbci.com/_XMCM/uberjeph/index.html <http://members.nbci.com/_XMCM/uberjeph/index.html> - click on tech procedures and then belt change. I'd like to add a couple of comments = to it -=20 =20 1. splurge the $20 or so for the fan clutch hold-down tool. It's at least a twenty-dollar pain-in-the butt to get the fan off without it, and impossible to re-torque as well. You can give motorworks.com a = ring, they'll be able to tell ya the right part. Uberjeph managed to hold = down the fan clutch with an 8mm hex wrench he jammed in between the = hold-down bolts. I think this might be different for 95 and 96+ M3s - anyone = know? I do know that the technique didn't work on my '97. I futzed something up with vise grips and an assortment of small hand tools, but I = wouldn't do it that way again. 2. splurge the $10 or so for a good 18-24" breaker bar (assuming you've already got the matching 8mm hex bit), to easily hold down the = tensioner while you futz with the belts. If you do it with a tiny 8mm hex wrench or an 8" socket wrench (like I did), you end up wedging your arm in between the radiator and the frame and pinching the artery next to the armpit as you try to crank it down and do the belts. Yikes. =20 Also, re: Stoptech Brakes - did anyone notice that the brake kit will NOT fit under 17" stock wheels? 18" (or 17" w/funky shape/offset) are required. Not that having 18" wheels are a bad thing... =20 Scott Yu '97 Coupe, boston =20 > -------------------- 7 -------------------- > Date: Wed, 21 Feb 2001 05:04:07 -0800 (PST) > From: Robert Liu < bob_a_liu@yahoo.com <mailto:bob_a_liu@yahoo.com> > > Subject: [E36M3] Changing Accessory Belts >=20 > Hi All, >=20 > I am armed with new accessory belts and a Bentley > service manual. REAL LTW/GT rims have "BMW MOTORSPORT" not just "MOTORSPORT" stamped into the front. the ones offered by the wheelexchange.com are also knockoffs, and probably not forged. REAL forged wheels (without the "BMW Motorsport") have a little pocket under the centercap for the ///M logo decal. real forged wheels only have an offset of ET41. the ebay ad says it has a "COMPLETE 30 DAY SATISFACTION GUARANTEE ". to me, this may mean that you can buy them, track them, bend them, and return them for all of your money back. you don't even get that guarantee with OEM BMW rims. hope this helps. ben liaw > Does anyone think that these pictures are swapped for the replica and the > "OEM" wheels?
