#1. removing pilot sports - from Paul Elliott

Date: Fri, 2 Mar 2001 20:00:46 -0500 From: "Paul Elliott" <pelliott@rcn.com> Subject: removing pilot sports I stopped by my installer today, who happens to be a Tire Rack recommended installer in Stamford. Anyway, I was asking him if he's still doing 17" wheels, and he told me he cant do M3 wheels anymore...Specifically, he told me they had one in a while ago with Pilot Sports, and with their machine, they simply could NOT remove the bead from the Pilot Sports. He said they do other 17" low profile tires, but just could not handle the 245/40-17 Pilot Sports! That's a major bummer, as I was counting on having TR ship my next set of pilot sports to him for mounting. Now, I'm wondering how wide spread this problem is...He admitted that he'd be able to do it if he bought a larger machine, but I guess he doesnt have the traffic in pilot sports, to make it worth while. _____________________ Paul Elliott '99 Alpine White M3 <25000 mi Forged M dbl-spokes; Rotex pads; Dinan Stage II Supercharger; Stygar Short Shift kit and Clutch Stop; Skaggs Pedals; X-brace; Sound by Kenwood Excelon, Polk, JL Audio

Not cheap but a whole lot less than a car. I made low 230s at the wheels with dinan CAI, shark injector, lightweight flywheel, and UUC exhaust on my 97... does a 95 with chip, euro HFM, and intake make more than that?! -kit

#3. An M is an M - from Allen Reyes

Date: Sat, 03 Mar 2001 01:45:20 From: "Allen Reyes" <allenrey14@hotmail.com> Subject: An M is an M We can go on forever about '95 vs '98 and eventually it may cause descension amongst the ranks. I view the issue as: An M3 is an M3 whether it's an early prod. '95 all the way up to a '99. The differences seem to outweigh each other, and when it boils down to actual performance, both are comparable. Here are some of the differences: '95 '98 3.0l silky smooth powerband 3.2l more torque<grunt> HFM upgradable<healthy hp incr> diff gear ratios plastic water pump failure don't need to replace<metal imp> suede seats cool elec. climate controls LWT model thicker sways There's more but I'm sure the point is taken. Lot's of us on the list change out so many things that some of the differences don't even matter. Why don't we just put Euro-spec motors in our cars and be happy?;)_ Realistically though, it's just a matter of taste. Most are going to hold pride in what they own, but every M is a great car in my opinion. That car did a 5.3 seconds from 0 - 60, and 14 seconds flat at 100 mph through the 1/4 mile. Any other E36 M3 tests the same magazine did after that could not match it. The 99 model was the slowest at more than 6 seconds (lost to the S4). Fooling with numbers like these are totally senseless, of course. The same cars have production variations, etc. One thing for sure - 95 or later cars are very very close in performance driven flat-out. Later cars have more torque, therefore feel more "useful" as daily drivers. 95 cars have smaller engines, so, in general, they are sweeter to rev... Just MHO, :O) David -------------------------------------------------------------------- Date: Fri, 2 Mar 2001 09:10:54 -0500 From: "Jonathan Evans" <jonathanevans@hotmail.com> Subject: 95 vs. 98 impressions I get to drive a 98 2 door M (40k miles) for a couple of days (my normal commuter is a 95 M 2 door with 60k miles) and have been impressed. Both are totally stock, 5 speed, etc... 98 has more torque, seems faster and has better gearing for around town driving. Better turn in and steering feel as well. Shifts smoother too. Brakes grab quicker with more authority. We won't even compare the HK sound system to mine (is that treble I hear??). So, how do I (please keep in mind my inherent cheapness): 1. Make my car a LITTLE bit faster (chip?). I've got a triflow exhaust (love it). 2. "Enhance" steering feel. Get 96 strut hats and swap them? Smaller steering wheel? 3. Change my gear oil? It was smoother cold than mine is when warm. 4. Change brake pads, rotors, fluid? I thought they were changed 10k miles ago. 5. Sell my car and buy his? His is for sale BTW. Hmm, I may have just answered my own question. The '98 (at least mine) has Boge shocks from the factory. Did the earlier models come with the same Boge units or did they have Bilsteins from the factory like the E30 M3s and even early iS models. Boge shocks seem to last no time. Mine have 35K miles and they are totally shot.
